Lions advance to Regionals

The Regional Round of the high school football playoffs is officially here and the John Tyler Lions are still alive and kicking. John Tyler is coming off a 38-10 win over the Wylie Pirates in the Area Round.

Quarterback Greg Ward went 12-of-30 for 222 yards and two touchdowns. His two touchdown passes were to Justice Liggins and Fred Ross.  DeQuante Wood led the ground attack with 12 carries for 104 yards and two touchdowns. Travern Johnson tacked on a touchdown with a pick-six.

The defense dominated, showing why it deserves to be this far in the post-season. Tyus Bowser had seven sacks. Yes, seven sacks. The Lions also recovered two fumbles. DeAndre Miller finished the game with 14 tackles.

John Tyler, who now holds a record of 11-1 will look to bring that same dominance into Friday’s game when they travel to Allen to take on the Frisco Raccoons. That game will take part in Eagle Stadium, a stadium which opened up this year and costs about $60 million. It holds 18,000 fans.

The Lions could very easily have their hands full with the Raccoons who hold a record of 9-3 overall. They are coming off a 42-7 win over the Samuell Spartans. Friday’s game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
