The New Super 1 Foods in Tyler

December 29th, 2012

Super 1 FoodWell, as an old song once stated: “It’s been a long December…” A busy Christmas season has put a bit of a crimp in my productivity so honestly as I sit down to type out this article I feel a bit, like I’m playing catch up for the month. It seems all the topics I’ve been meaning to cover are the same ones I’ve been mulling over for the last couple of weeks, so I guess I’ll start with my oldest subject first.

Super 1 Foods is essentially the Brookshire’s company’s answer to competition like Wal-Mart or Sam’s Club. It’s not exactly wholesale food, so don’t expect to leave with boxes of purchases you’ll never actually eat. However it is probably a bit larger than some of the other Brookshire’s stores but with lower prices and without some of the frills one might expect to find at the Rice road location, or at the more expensive market like Tyler favorite, Fresh.

Of course I bring this up because the Grocery Company has opened a new Super 1 Foods in place of an aging Brookshire’s, located on the west loop in Tyler. They simultaneously closed the older more run- down Super 1 it replaced. I’m no expert but this seemed like a really smart move to me. Rather than repair two stores that apparently weren’t making the grade, why not give one a name change and a facelift, close the other, thus saving some money, and step up your game against the competition, (meaning Wal-Mart), which is nearly right across the street?

Inside the store the layout has actually not changed that much, except that they’re using the space much better. They also gave the interior a real upgrade. It looks great, very clean, new paint, new ceilings; overall it’s a much nicer, more upscale feel. The selection is bigger too. Shelving stands higher, (nearly to the roof in places), and there are no more wide open spaces with little or no product. While I’ve not shopped there a lot as yet, the prices seem lower than the other Brookshire’s stores and closer to those of Wal-Mart’s grocery. Couple that with the fact that the store requires less wandering around than its competitor, and the new Super 1 should take back some of the business the old store lost when the challenger moved in across the street.

Brookshires Grocery Store 5th Street

March 5th, 2011

Brookshires Grocery Store on 5th St.

Brookshires grocery store is a staple of Tyler. A family owned company that lives right here in Tyler has expanded it’s business across the country.

The Brookshires on 5th St. in Tyler is one of many locations and one of the several flagship stores in Tyler. Brookshires is an above average grocery store known for the exceptional quality of the food as well as the extraordinary and helpful nature of the staff.

Brookshires policy nurtures the comfort of it’s customers in earnest detail. The trained bag boys are required to help you bring all bags and carts to your car as well as load your groceries if needed.

The dress and appearance code assures that no one will again be disgusted with the unnatural sight of facial hair on employees, presumably to further comfort the high number of elderly shoppers into believing that since Brookshires employees always appear young then life itself has slowed down allowing them more time on this earth to spend eating groceries.

Although Brookshires is just another grocery store, it is undoubtedly a fancy grocery store. A great amount of expense and care is placed into the Tyler locations, from the arrangement of the expensive cheeses to the complimentary recipes offered by an in house chef. Brookshires does not merely sell groceries, they sell a unique and high quality cuisine of ingredients.

Locally Brookshires is unmatched in quality and selection in ingredients making it the ideal place to shop for any special home made meals or healthy organic vegetables and fruits to keep away the scurvy. Any Tyler resident is aware of the great reputation and service of Brookshires, but not all can afford it. Still, Brookshires is a well appreciated option for a better source of groceries.

Memories of Brookshires Grocery Store in Tyler Texas

Brookshires Grocery in the 1920's

As a  child in the 1950’s, we used to spend the whole Summer with my Grandparents in Tyler.  My Mom grew up there.  I have wonderful memories of Tyler, but part of it is when my Grandparents or Parents would take me and my cousins to shop at Brookshire’s!

Having no air conditioning at their house, we LOVED the cold air and floors there!  Back then we used to go  barefooted, and the cold floor felt WONDERful!  (I don’t know if kids do that now)   Our special treat was to each be able to pick out a comic book if we were good, and my Grandma taught us to each pick out a DIFFERENT one so we could trade and read 3 different ones!

Even though I lived in Brooklyn, NY, and my cousins lived in LA, California, we loved that time of year when we would live as one Family together in my Grandparents’ house on the State Park Highway, and play with our Texas cousins for the whole Summer!!!  What a wonderful world it was for me…to this day, I feel that it was “therapeutic” as I was growing up, and I hope to go back one day.  Cheryl

The Granary

October 31st, 2010

The Granary in Tyler is a great place to find all your health needs. The Granary has a great selection of organic fruit and vegetables. When I am pregnant I tend to have quite a bit of morning sickness. The granary has many different natural ways to help you hold down the food. If you are trying to find something I recommend getting ginger candies from the granary. This was one of the only ways that I could ever keep from throwing up. The Granary has many different vitamins and supplements. They have all the vitamins that your body needs when you are pregnant, such as vitamin D, iron pills, and prenatal vitamins.

You can get a lot of great foods that are made without MSG and other unhealthy preservatives. When you kids have an reaction to MSG it is hard to find foods that can go into their diets and yet are easy to make. The Granary has many different microwavable foods that kids will love, like Mac & Cheese, chicken nuggets, hot dogs, and simple fun snacks.

If you do not really know what you are looking for, the staff is great and fast to help you find just what you are looking for. The Granary in Tyler in the shopping center in the corner of the loop and fifth street, is a great place to find a healthy way to bring vitamins into your diet.

Fruity Pebbles Taste Nasty! What Happened?

Fruity Pebbles Cereal Tastes Nasty

I bought Fruity Pebbles at Brookshires Grocery Store today and was very disappointed to discover the cereal tastes like throw up.

I quickly spit the cereal out of my mouth and wondered what the deal is. Does Fruity Pebbles now use a new recipe with cheaper ingredients to save money?

The milk hasn’t changed colors yet either. I will never buy disgusting fruity pebbles ever again. I wonder if the offbrand “Dyno Bites” has the same taste issue?

Please comment if you have been poisoned by nasty flavors in your mouth as I have from Fruity Pebbles.
