The grocery store will have the freshest products and will have a great selection of healthy foods and supplements. The prices of Fresh will be higher than other grocery stores in Tyler, but the quality of food will be some of the best around. Fresh will some what resemble the popular Central Market in Austin, Texas.

Brookshires Fresh

Fresh Grocery Store

The construction of Fresh has started and hopefully will be opened next year (2011). The store will still have the friendly customer service that you can find at other Brookshire’s Grocery Stores. This development is a great new establishment for East Texas.

I am really looking forward to this store and I am glad that the store has started going up. At one point I heard that the organic grocery store was going to open this month but by driving by the location I can not see how that is going to happen. Brookshire’s company is bringing Fresh to Tyler to give a whole new experience of grocery shopping. Fresh will bring a new way of healthy eating, shopping, and living to East Texas.

Hairy New Rules

October 12th, 2010
Beards in Brookshires

Beards in Brookshires

While shopping at Brookshire’s Grocery Stores you may have noticed something different about the workers there? They are all hairy! New rules have been put in place at all the Brookshire’s and Super 1 Foods stores. All staff is allowed to have facial hair. There are still some pretty strict rules on how their employees groom themselves. Their rules include not allowing their employees to grow a full beard.

I really do not know how to feel about these new rules. Personally I do not really care if my cashier has a go-tee, or if the kid carrying my bags to my car has a peach fuzz mustache. The only thing that some what bothers me is the people that are handling my food. I do not want to open up my perfectly wrapped sandwich meat and find little hairs from some random guy’s chin. I, personally, think that if you are handling food that there should be stricter rules about facial hair.

These new rules are very interesting and I know that many of the employees are very excited about the freedom of their own grooming, but there is something unappealing about someone with ill groomed facial hair handling my food.

Brookshire’s Game

September 10th, 2010

If you have been shopping at Brookshire’s Grocery Company, I am sure that you have heard of the current game that is going on. The “Thanks a Million, Collect & Win Game” is very simple to play. Use your “thank you” card to collect game pieces. Ask the store cashier for a game board. Match the pieces to their proper places on the board. The more money you spend in the store, the more game pieces you will receive.

They offer many different prices, cash, cars, gift cards, and a chance to win a cruise, a $10,000 home remodel, and even an Apple iPad. The car prizes include a Ford F-150 truck, a Ford Escape Hybrid, and a Ford Mustang. They have cash prizes from two dollars to the grand prize of a million dollars. They also have gift card prizes worth twenty to five hundred dollars.

They have drawings for a cruise, I was so excited to quickly get the second game board piece, then I realized that you can enter for the cruise. They do drawings for fourteen cruises. You must send you information (on a 3”x5” index card) and the pieces to Food Club Carnival Cruise Sweepstakes.

Many people want to know which pieces are the most valuable. We have opened hundreds of pieces and have not won even the two dollar prize, which they claim has 50,000 prizes available. When all of the prizes, we are only one or two pieces short of winning. The most valuable pieces, to win the million dollar prize, are B02 and B06, (middle Oreo piece, and hotdog piece).

The closest we have gotten to a large prize is one away from the Apple iPad. The hardest piece to get for that prize is B62 (part of the first cupcake). Out of all the game pieces we have opened we can not even win the smallest prize of $2 cash (hardest piece to find B89). The largest Brookshire’s gift card is worth $500 (the hardest piece to find being B40). Anything over the value of the $500 gift card it is hard to find two game pieces. Each of the cars has two valuable pieces.

The Ford F-150’s most valuable pieces are B07 and B08 (Zatarain’s Jambalaya mix, and Zatarain’s Creole Seasoning). The two pieces that are the most valuable pieces to win the Ford Escape Hybrid are B19 and B20 (Pop Tarts piece, and Special K piece). The Ford Mustang’s most valuable pieces are B22 and B26. Besides the million dollars grand prize, Brookshire’s also have cash prizes worth $50,000, $25,000, and $5,000 (the hardest pieces to find for those prizes are B13, B15, B29, B30, B41, and B44).

Brookshire’s game also has twenty available home remodeling prizes worth $10,000, the two pieces that are the hardest to find are B32 and B35. If you opened the pieces that I have listed I would recommend that you start playing the game.

They have an online game. In each pack of game pieces they have an online game code. Go to the Brookshire’s website and enter the nine digit code and have a chance to win over $1,180,000 in cash, gift cards, iPads, carnival cruises, and vehicles. Although I am a frequent Brookshire’s shopper, the online game would not take my Thank You Card number. I was pretty frustrated constantly retyping the same number on the back of my card. I never really got to play the online game.

Every pack of game pieces includes a coupon or an “instant win” when you can win more game packs. We have 25 cents off cat food coupons lying all around our house. Although it seems like we are not going to win even the $2 cash, we are going to keep filling out the game board. Hopefully we will start getting better luck.

East Texas State Fair Farmer’s Market

June 2nd, 2010
East Texas State Fair Farmers Market

East Texas State Fair Farmers Market

I’ve heard it said that every man has at least one good novel in him, I hope that is true. I think it is also true that most people have a have a gardener in there somewhere. I very much enjoy the process of experimenting with different plants and watching things grow in Tyler TX. For me however the journey is something of its own reward. I am a nominal gardener at best. I generally do ok, and I enjoy eating the fresh fruits and vegetables I grow, but I certainly don’t produce enough to supply all my nutritional needs. In recent years I have less time to devote to the pursuit of gardening, but I definitely miss the process, as well as the fresh food.

The East Texas State Fair Farmer’s Market has as its mission to “promote a sense of community within the City of Tyler, to bring fresh local food to the public and to provide farmers and producers a place to sell their goods at a reasonable price.” For those of us who don’t have our own farms or gardens, the Farmers Market offers access to quality local produce. Not only does the community stand to eat better, but the money spent at the market stays home in Tyler. And the venue offers more than just fruits and vegetables. There are booths that sell fresh eggs, honey, stone ground corn meal, even craft items like quilted goods and candles as well.

The Farmers Market is open three days a week (Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday), from seven in the morning to one in the afternoon. It runs from May eight to August fourteenth. For those interested in becoming a vendor at the local Farmer’s Market there is a fairly extensive application as well as a list of rules. Interested readers can find the application by going to http://www.etstatefair.com/documents/ETSFFARMERSMKTVENDORCONTRACT2010.pdf. For general info visit: http://www.etstatefair.com/farmers-market.php. Different products peak at different times obviously, so I also recemend checking out the market’s Facebook page in order to see what kind of produce is likely to be available. Just click on the link below to go to the site directly.  http://www.facebook.com/pages/Tyler-TX/East-Texas-State-Fair-Farmers-Market/10150123220645427?filter=1,

So while I may not have time to grow my own garden this year, I can still enjoy the freshest possible food and keep more of my dollars home in East Texas.

Brookshire’s Pride

March 23rd, 2010

The Brookshire’s grocery company has been named one of the top companies to work in the state of Texas. I totally agree with this award. Although I know that most people do not want to go to work in the morning, honestly, who does? Brookshire’s offers great benefits to their employees. But something that has always impressed me is that it is honestly a family-centered business. Every year they have events to honor their employees and their employee’s families.

Brookshire’s has a camp ground on Lake Palestine available for their employees and family. Every year they put on picnics to honor the workers for every part of Brookshires. Not only do they have great food but they also give away great prizes, including the flat screen television that is now hanging up in my bedroom. Brookshires has a small house available for employees and their families to stay at if they are in need, or if they have undergone some sort of disaster.

Brookshire’s has always been a family friendly company. In 1928 Wood T. Brookshire opened a small store downtown square in Tyler. Wood along with his brothers owned several different stores in East Texas. In 1939 the partnership dissolved. Brookshire was founded with the motto of “people first, profits will follow”. In 1953 Brookshire opened its first warehouse. Now Brookshires has more than 150 supermarkets throughout Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Mississippi. Not only do they own the Brookshire Grocery Company, but also Super 1 Foods, and Ole Foods.

Tyler has the premiere Brookshire’s located on Rice Road. This store is the nicest store in Tyler. You are always treated with respect and the employees are always helpful. One thing that I love about the Brookshire’s Company is the fact that the employee carries out your groceries to your car for you. When you are trying to balance two children, and digging through your purse trying to find your keys, it is nice to have someone hired to put the groceries into your car.

Brookshire’s employees volunteer. The company looks at this as their way to give back to the community. All level jobs within the company find opportunities to give back, whether it is running for breast cancer or if it is cleaning the creek at Rose Rudman Park.

Brookshire Grocery Company is a great place to shop for you and your family. Their goal has been not only to make the store convenient to your needs but to also be a great experience for you and your family.
