Murphey the Jeweler

diamond ring stores in Tyler Texas

I have shopped for jewelery at James Avery, Sam’s wholesale club and a place in San Antonio called Americus Diamonds but have yet to buy something from a local Tyler jewelery store like Jim’s Jewelers and Murphey the Jeweler.

There are 6 important “C’s” to consider when purchasing a diamond ring.

Tip: When shopping around write down the specs for the type of ring your interested in from atleast 3 – 4 diamond ring stores in Tyler. Take down information on the cut, carat, clarity, color, certification and of course cost.

Chances are some of the Tyler Jewelery sales people will see your dilegence in writing down information and will lower their ring prices as you leave the store. Take down the new price and visit a few more jewelery stores in Tyler.

Below are some trusted jewelery stores in Tyler Texas although I have yet to build any satisfying trust in these stores to give me a confident buying experience.

For the guys out there looking for quality yet affordable engagement rings more advertising should be centered around value for the buck spent on diamond rings and jewelery.

Life Gem Brings Beauty from Well… Ashes

Diamonds from loved ones remains

Diamonds from Loved Ones Remains

I was recently researching for a geology paper I was writing when I came across a very unusual business. While reading on synthetic diamonds and gyms I discovered a company called “Life Gem,” that grows precious stones from the cremated remains of loved ones who have passed on.

The process, by which synthetic or “cultured” stones are created, is essentially the same as the natural one. Heat and pressure are applied to carbon molecules. Only the synthetic process takes about four days as opposed to four million years. Interestingly the manufactured variety can be superior in some respects than their natural sisters; however they are considerably more inexpensive up against comparable stones.

Life Gem has found a way to make the process of diamond buying infinitely more personal. The carbon used in the formation of Life Gem’s stones is of course carbon taken from the hair or ashes of the diseased. The website reads like it was written by a funeral home director. It offers testimonials from satisfied customers who found comfort in their new rings, pendants and other jewelry, claiming that it helped them to deal with their grief and feel closer to those they had lost.

Oh and those enthusiastic pet owners among us with more money than they know what to do with… well, you guessed it. They can also work the same magic if your lost loved one happens to have four legs. By the way the company firmly insists that the remains, (I’m not really comfortable with that term in this context), or carbon left in their care is meticulously documented and tracked in order to avoid loss or confusion. I personally know of no reason to distrust them on this point.

I have to say I find the whole process rather off- putting. It’s like a modern twist on the medieval relic. I wonder why the same process couldn’t be used to make wedding rings for the living. The Bride and groom could each donate a lock of hair and have rings made to commemorate their love whilst both still live; still creepy somehow, but a little less so. Despite my admittedly ill- informed opinion, the business has found a market. The process is not terribly cheap by the way, but for some people it is a fitting memorial to those they’ve lost. To each his own I guess, but I think I’ll settle for a wake and a nice head stone. For more on Life Gem visit their webpage at http://www.lifegem.com.

Murphey the Jeweler Tyler Texas

Murphey the Jeweler

Michael Murphey and his family opened their jewelry business in January of 1868. Murphy the Jeweler still serves Tyler out of the little store in the Green Acres Shopping center of off Troop Hwy. All the staff that works there are experts when it comes to jewelry. No matter the value of a piece of jewelry, if it breaks they will be able to fix it.

Jewelry in Tyler TX

There is a great selection of jewelry, including wedding bands, engagement rings, necklaces, bracelets, and so much more. One of my favorite things is these bracelets known as story wheels. They sell a short chain for your wrist and all different gold and silver wheels that compose a beautiful bracelet. You can get small wheels that are set with gems or diamonds. Top your beautiful jewelry off with your own charms that hang from your unique bracelet. I am not the biggest fan of wearing watches (although I probably should), but there is a great collection of Rolex watches, with gold, silver, and leather bands.

The most important piece of jewelry that you get is an engagement ring. Murphey has hundreds of choices of rings and wedding bands. They have all different options of diamonds, pearls, emeralds, and rubies, you can find the perfect ring for that special person in your life.

Murphey the jeweler has been serving Tyler through all different economy ups and downs. The friendly staff is still there to help you find that perfect gift for your loved ones.

The Potpourri House in Tyler, Yeah Yeah … I Know

July 20th, 2010

I’m about to do two things that could conceivably come back to haunt me. First off I’m going to discuss a favorite Tyler eatery / department store / catering service, in a way that implies I’m not a big fan. Secondly, in discussing this establishment it will become apparent that I’ve been there. Ok so am I being too cryptic? Fine. The restaurant… or whatever, is the Potpourri House, (as I guess the title of this article gives away). Now it takes either a big man, or a shameless one to admit that he’s been to the Potpourri House, I’m not sure which one applies to me.

The Potpourri House is a difficult business / eatery to describe. It is part gift shop, part café or tea house, part fine dining restaurant. As the name implies, they have a large supply of scented candles, incense, and of course potpourri. The store also carries inventory like higher end clothing and jewelry. I have this weird mental picture of patrons browsing through the store with a glass of wine in hand complaining about the men in their lives, or talking about Sex in the City. I don’t know why, that’s just the strange association I have with the restaurant.

The food at the PH is actually pretty good, the portions are not exactly man size, but it’s tasty and generally light. The menu consists of a lot chicken, roast beef and shrimp. I guess at this point I should either turn in my man card or explain why I was interloping in this very feminine universe. First off I’ve been there two or three times. It seems the party planning committee at work contains all ladies, and they love the Potpourri House. And by the way the establishment specializes in parties, businesses and church groups. I guess I shouldn’t complain too much because work has always paid for the meals, but I’m not going to lie, it would be nice to have those parties somewhere else. I’m not suggesting a cigar bar or anything, I’d settle for gender neutral at this point. Anyway the party is generally the place where the Christmas bonuses are handed out, so I try to attend. But I do feel pretty out of place, and I often grab a bit to eat when I get home.

The Potpourri House is not terrible it’s just very girly. I suggest that any male avoid it if at all possible. If that’s not possible try to avoid telling your buddies where you had lunch. For more information on the Potpourri House, visit their web page at www.potpourrihouse.com. For reservations call begin_of_the_skype_highlighting(903) 592-4171. They are located at 3320 Troup Highway in Tyler. end_of_the_skype_highlighting

While walking through the Broadway Square Mall I have to stop in the small over crowded store. Through I want to scream trying to push my double stroller around the display towers. I battle through the store to get to the back hair products. I love the idea to use nature as beauty accessories. I love the selection of the 1940 style of hair products. Icing has a great selection of peacock feathers for your hair. I love the look of the colorful feathers.

Hair accessories are not the only thing sold at Icing. The jewelry is very in fashion sold at a great price. Many times I have gone there and found the most for my money. Icing has a ton of amazing sales. I love going into the store and seeing the white and red 50% off sale sign, or the “RED LINE” sale sign that indicates that about a fourth of the store is about half off or even more!

Some the best purses, bags and clutches are found at Icing. Find your style, with their great selection of leather, animal prints and bright colors. Bring out your personality through your style. Icing is up to date with the best and most recent fashion statements. And they even have to best sales on their brand name bags.

When I go into the store I can not help but dig through the fun selection of scarves. The long strands of colorful material can change the entire look to your style, and bring out the fun in your personality.

I love the makeup cases that you can buy at Icing. They have great selection of colors that you can use according to your mood. No matter the type of skin tone that you have or no matter the color of eye shadow that you prefer you can find it all at the Icings large selection.

It is really hard to avoid the accessory store. To at least battle through the store to just look around at what I really want but not really need. I love to see the most recent styles at Icing, for every season. The Icing’s website shows the newest selections and fashions that you can either order of line or that are available at the store.
