Tax Brackets and Have you Filed Your 2011 Taxes Yet?

March 14th, 2012

What you see on your calendar if you have one of those nice ones with every holiday including Canadian holidays is tax day. You know it is the middle of March and April is almost here so I did a little spring cleaning out in my yard by picking up an old crusty slip n’ slide that needed to go in the trash. What did I find but a snake underneath. Speaking of snakes the IRS is seen by many as one of these slimy things and the closer you approach the tax deadline you may start to feel this way too but these guys are good people just doing their rightful job.

Don’t take out your angst on these government employed professionals. You may not agree with what is going on politically right now with all the union control on the IRS but many of these IRS agents are simply taking and reviewing your taxes as they ought too. This is standard procedure in any government no matter how conservative or liberal.

IRS Tax filing deadline

Tax deadline day is Tuesday April 17, 2012.

What I like to do is spread all my tax documents I have so far out on my desk around late January and start on my taxes early. There is something great about getting taxes over and done with as soon as possible. A great relief comes over me and I feel I can get back to work. I usually can’t get it done in a day because I don’t have all documents in yet from all the companies that have paid me during the year. I also have a whole family that is wondering why I am devoting 100 % of my attention to a bunch of boring papers.

You might be saying it’s only April 14th but that means you only have about 4 weeks left until deadline day! Don’t worry we have some last minute tax guides below that should help motivate you along.

What is My Tax Bracket for 2011?

If single:

  • 10% for incomes up to $8,500
  • 15% for incomes from $8,500 to $34,500
  • 25% for incomes from $34,500 to $83,600
  • 28% for incomes from $83,600 to $174,400
  • 33% for incomes from $174,400 to $379,150
  • 35% for incomes over $379,150

Over the last 10 years the tax brackets have increased little by little each year, and rates came down for the upper 4 tax brackets in 2003.

These are the brackets for what people pay on their reported wages. There are also capital gains taxes from investments, estate taxes, corporate tax, and fortunately for Texas no state or local income tax. We do have to pay 8.25 % sales tax and don’t forget property tax but by God’s grace lets pray we never introduce a Texas state income tax! I am going to start at the $8,500 level regarding earned income credit simply because these are some pretty big check you get back from the IRS. If you make between $8,500 $8,550 per year you won’t have to worry about any of these taxes and in fact will get the earned income credit of $2,899 whether you are single or married filing jointly. These earned income credits steadily increase as your income rises and tops out at $3,094 if you make between $21,750 – $21,800. Even if you only made $9050 – $9,100 you will get this top level amount in a big whopping check from the IRS for $3,094. It is much less if you have no children at, $464.

Putting This All in Perspective

Before 2001, income tax brackets were based on Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1993. The Clinton Administration barely got it by a Democratic Congress with Al Gore being the tie breaking vote in the Senate. This policy allowed for 5 tax brackets. If you made less than $34,317 you paid no taxes except every other year you paid 15%. All other brackets looked as follows:

28% for incomes from $34,317 to $83,075
31% for incomes from $83,075 to $178,572
36% for incomes from $178,572 to $388,200
39.6% for incomes over $388,200

There are Tax Foundation records that go as far back as 1913 although federal income taxes have been collected by the US government since the end of the Civil War in 1865. The whole bracket idea based on if you are just filing as an individual or married couple did not happen until 1948. Have you ever wondered what the first ever tax brackets looked like? We have them available below from 1913 which were for individuals regardless if they were married:

1% for incomes up to $453,292
2% for incomes from $453,292 to $1,133,230
3% for incomes from $1,133,230 to $1,699,846
4% for incomes from $1,699,846 to $2,266,461
5% for incomes from $2,266,461 to $5,666,152
6% for incomes from $5,666,152 to $11,332,304
7% for incomes over $11,332,304

Major Points in Tax History

In 100 years of U.S. tax history the first big change was when a rate of 67% was enacted in 1917. This rate increased to 73% in 1921 and then began to come back down again quite substantially. The highest tax bracket with an income of $1,282,169 paid just 25% income tax from 1925 to 1932. As the Great Depression hit, Hoover passed a big tax increase raising the highest tax bracket to 63% that eventually increased to 79% in 1936. The increases targeted the higher wealthy income levels. World War II cost a fortune and by 1945 when the war ended there was a 90% income tax on anyone who made over $1,121,898.

This high tax rate of 90% did not drop below 80% until Kennedy’s tax cut in 1964. During these high tax bracket years the lowest bracket paid 16% under the same policy. Contrast this 16% bracket for low income earners with the earned income credit we have today where millions of Americans pay absolutely no taxes at all.

During Reagan’s years The Tax Equity and Fiscal Responsibility Act of 1982 increased taxes and overall revenue and it removed the highest tax brackets and created a 50% bracket for income of more than $199.035. This bracket was quite a bit lower than prior years.

In conclusion, I believe our tax rates seem to be in a middle area when looking at all income levels. The top level income tax rates are closer to historical lows than historical highs when considering the entire tax bracket history on record. The highest rate right now is 35% but in 1964 it was as high as 91%! The perception put out in much of the media is that the rich have got it so good while the poorest among us are paying all kinds of taxes. It is true if you are rich you are doing good but they still pay most of the U.S. taxes. In reality, if you are married filing jointly with one child and making $24,000 a year in 1945 you would have paid $5,520 in federal income taxes but in 2011 you will pay $16 with earned income credit calculated in. In comparison to 1983 when Ronald Reagan was in office you would have paid $2,208 in federal income taxes but in 2011 you would only pay $16. As you can see the rich are paying most of the taxes and are even subsidizing low income earners so they don’t have to pay taxes at all. Are things fair right now in the tax code? You bet they are and if anything the rich should pay less and the millions not paying taxes at all should put in a little.

Obama’s Long Form Birth Certificate 2011

April 27th, 2011

Obama Long Form Birth Certificate from Hawaii, genuine

Wow! Finally the real genuine long form Obama birth certificate. This was released April 26 2011 from Hawaii.

Now we wait to hear conspiracies that the long form Obama birth certificate 2011 is a forgery. You know that whole debate is coming.

I am now waiting to see if Obama will say that this is indeed his birth certificate. Those who love chasing conspiracies will want to hear this. Once conspiracists hear this they will want even more information and so the cycle continues.

The current question being posed is: “Obama has provided us with another “Certificate of Live Birth” are people so stupid they don’t no what the difference between a “Birth Certificate” and a “Certificate of Live Birth”?”

The certificate shows his fathers race as African and his mothers race as white. The notion that the birth form would say that Obama’s race is “white” is not on the form anywhere so this theory about wanting to hide this is false as well as the theory of him not being a natural born citizen. The document does list his father as African. If his father is not American I do not believe Obama qualifies but I assume this only refers to his fathers race.

Another point of considerations is that when using Adobe Illustrator and releasing layers/elements it shows the document was composed using a few layers. Here are two seperate layers of what the Whitehouse released. You may interpret it as you see fit.

Obama Birth Certificate Adobe Illustrator release element shows all

Here is the Whitehouse.gov PDF version if you would like to try the Adobe Illustrator release layered elements technique: Whitehouse.gov full PDF file

It’s interesting that this was released at the same time the Jerome R. Corsi book, “Where’s Obama’s Birth Certificate” is number 1 on Amazon.com.

Congress Plans Vote to Starve Obama Care of Funds

February 10th, 2011

The Republican House is once again on a collision course with the other half of the legislature and with the executive. The plan is to vote to restrict funds from the new Obama care program sometime next week. Frustrated Dems are again ridiculing the vote as another measure that will go nowhere given the fact that they control the senate. But the Republicans are simply demonstrating their seriousness both about undoing the new health care legislation and about reducing overall spending. This week they released a plan to deeply cut expenditures to a whole slew of government programs, including the National Endowment for the Arts, Amtrak, the IRS, (seriously, who won’t support that?!) and numerous other big government favs.

So even though the move to defund the President’s pet law will probably not go very far it does serve a highly useful purpose. It reminds the American people where their senators and congressmen or women stand on the issue. Despite the promises of the ineffectual Harry Reid, the repeal did in fact make it to the senate floor where members where forced once again to put their names to controversial and unpopular legislation. I hope the electorate was watching. Now the landscape has changed slightly however. With the federal judiciary ruling Obama care unconstitutional it’s almost certain to eventually find its way to the supremes. Congresses vote next week would potentially put the Senate back on the hot seat, particularly if the nation’s highest court eventually up holds the federal court’s ruling and throws out the new law. Any votes against defunding national health insurance would be in effect votes for sustaining unconstitutional government.

Again, it’s imperative that the American people follow the money, and the votes on this thing! I realize many of us are cynical about our nation’s leadership, but that’s all the more reason. Big changes are afoot here and for once we have a group of people in congress doing what they said they were going to do! The American voters are smart people, smarter than they are often given credit for. Just don’t go back to sleep. We have a lot to learn in the next few months and perhaps more to teach.

Congress Moves to Repeal Obama Care and the EPA Pulls the Permit from a Major Coal Mine

January 18th, 2011

With a rough couple of weeks behind us the political wrangling of government is back underway. The House is picking up its bill to repeal the Obama health care law this week. There seems to be a push on the part of more moderate Republicans and Democrats, (with the help of the twenty four hour news networks), to guide both the House and the American people to accepting portions of the law and only dismantling the “unpopular” portions. This just seems to me to be more incrementalism, at least in the sense of gaining the American people’s acceptance. While I agree that the cost of health care is way out of control, this law has got to go! We simply cannot afford the monstrous government take over that Pelosi’s House rammed down our throats two falls ago! I for one favor scrapping it altogether and starting over with more cost effective measures that don’t empower the national bureaucracy.

The Executive branch is also taking a hard line as the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) is currently going ahead with plans to revoke the permit for a large coal mine in West Virginia. So yet another form of energy found to be harmful to mother earth is being restricted. So how exactly are we supposed to keep ourselves warm and alive in the winter months? Does the EPA’s even care? The move is even drawing the ire of West VA’s Democratic senators, who correctly foresee job losses and an economic hit coming to their state. This is a telling moment for the nation and the president who is supposedly moderating his tone in the same manner that President Clinton did following his mid- term defeat. I think the EPA’s continued tyranny points to the fact that President Obama has no intention of softening his far left agenda at all.

The fact is stopping this closure should be a sure win for the president. He could combat the notion that he’s anti business and perhaps point to new “jobs saved” or even job growth figures. Which by the way would possibly help his numbers in the polls. But the president believes too strongly in his ultra liberal vision for the country. It seems to me that he cares not a whit about the effects his radical agenda is having on the average American, except in so far as it affects his political prospects, and maybe not even then.

Who tackled the attempted assasin of congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords?

January 8th, 2011

Congresswoman GiffordDoes anyone know the bystanders name who tackled the gunman, Jared Loughner, who shot congresswoman of Tucson Arizona Gabrielle Giffords?

Answer: We still do not know the answer to this but Daniel Hernandez is the latest hero in this tragedy. As everyone on hand waited for emergency medical support to arrive, Hernandez held Giffords’s head in his lap and applied pressure to her wound likely saving her. “Daniel Hernandez is the young intern credited with saving Giffords life.”

Before the day got going she tweeted that she would be doing a Congress on Your Corner and invited people to come by.

She tweeted: “My 1st Congress on Your Corner starts now. Please stop by to let me know what is on your mind or tweet me later.” – @rep_giffords

Whoever he was he is a hero for tackling the gun man. This gunman shot and killed a child, volunteers, and wounded Giffords using a pistol at a four foot range directly aiming at each persons head. The shooting happened at a Tucson Arizona Safeway grocery store.

The gun man was aiming at peoples heads in multiple assassination attempts. Another gunman in the crowd opened fire on the assassin but ultimately a bystander tackled and captured the assassin.

The congress woman is alive and responding to commands after a bullet entered through her temple and out another side of her head.

Jared LoughnerThe suspect is a white 22 year old male. The man has been identified as Jared Laughner. Some news stations say Jared Loughner was in the military but the US military has not been able to verify he ever served in the military.

Mark KellyWho to follow: News @tylerdirectory Her husband astronaut Mark Kelly @shuttlecdrkelly and of course Gabrielle Giffords @rep_giffords

Gabrielle Giffords not Gifford is considered a gun rights advocate, pro-choice, 2nd amendment supporter, Blue Dog Democrat, only congress woman with active military spouse, youngest woman ever elected to house, grew up in Tucson, 3rd term Democrat, married to astronaut Mark Kelly, wants increased Arizona Mexico border security, Cornell graduate, Scripps University graduate, used to be a Republican and is known to listen to her constituents in the 8th district of Arizona frequently holding town hall style meetings at a local grocery store.

Listen to congress woman Giffords reading the US constitution: Listen now

Jared Loughner on Youtube- “my favorite activity is conscience draining…some of us don’t dream…my hope is for you to be literate…comprehend English grammar…in conclusion…informing illiterate dreamers about a new currency…in a few days you’ll know I’m conscience dreaming…reading the 2nd United States Constitution the government is implying mind control and brainwashing on the people by controlling grammar I won’t pay debt with a currency that is not backed by gold and silver no I will not trust in God…”

“The population of dreamers is less then 5% in the US”

Jared Loughner’s favorite books are Mein Kampf, The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx, and Animal Farm by George Orwell.

He was given a Bible at his military recruiting station and did not like that. He has an issue with the governments use of grammar to manipulate the population, whatever that means.

I haven’t been able to put this guy in any type of stereotype box other then crazy. He definitely doesn’t fall into the Tea Party category. Tea Partier’s are baby boomer bible belt type of people. He hates religion and Christianity and admires communism and the thinking of Hitler.

His last thing he wrote was on myspace and was: “goodbye friends”
