Glenn Beck Comes to Tyler

April 26th, 2010

On Saturday the 24th of April, Tyler, Texas played host to one of the leading voices in the contemporary American media. Glenn Beck is now widely considered one of the leaders of the new conservative surge in America. He is a radio and television host who champions traditional values, and opposes the march of progressive socialism in American government. While talk radio has become a game changer in American politics, Glenn’s show is less likely to appeal to policy wonks and political junkies. He generally has a larger more philosophical approach to the nation’s problems. The event was sponsored by Glen’s local radio affiliate KTBB AM 600.

Overall, the Oil Palace in Tyler is not a great venue. The chairs were too tightly packed together and a local musician played what sounded like the same song three times over but I can’t be sure, due to the fact that the sound system was in and out initially. The audio problems were eventually fixed before the proceedings were seriously underway however. The first thirty minutes or so consisted of patriotic music, and short introductions. State Rep. Leo Berman spoke first, stoking the crowd’s patriotic fires when he promised to work toward state legislation similar to that of Arizona, requiring any presidential candidate to demonstrate that he (or she), is constitutionally eligible to hold the office. Congressman, Louis Gomert, talked about his opposition to the stimulus and health care bills, and Governor Rick Perry spoke passionately about state’s rights and politically resisting the overreaching power of the Federal government. Mr. Beck’s relaxed almost subdued presentation contrasted sharply with the more electric stump speech given by the governor.

Despite the presence of the area glitterati, what happened at Tyler’s Oil Palace last night was not a campaign rally, or a meeting of activists. It was more like a lecture, of the kind that ought to be taking place on our college campuses. Mr. Beck, his tone passionate but thoughtful, took the audience on a walk through America’s providential history. He emphasized the difference between American individualism or individual liberty, and European group think, or socialization. As a semi-regular listener to Glenn’s show even I was surprised by his tone and content. Mr. Beck is not the fire-brand propagandist that his opponents claim. He is a thoughtful well read man, more concerned with principles than political issues.

The evening’s tone was nearly religious in the best sense of the word. Speaker after speaker emphasized the country’s need to restore its religious foundation. Glenn stated repeatedly that America was in need of revival. Even with the religious tenor, there was no hint of sectarian differences, or any trace of discrimination of any kind, just a group of Texans and Americans with the desire to remember who they were and to try to become that again.

Events like Mr. Beck’s visit, (or Sean Hannity’s last summer for that matter), are good for East Texas. They bring dollars and attention to our region. But beyond that they are good for traditional, conservative Americans who want to contribute to the nation’s restoration. Having guests like these men helps to connect Tylerites to national events. I for one am very grateful to KTBB for sponsoring these kinds of local programs. For more information on AM 600, go to www.ktbb.com. A Local Country Star

April 6th, 2010

Lindale is not much more than a quick stop for Interstate travelers. Beside I-20, and their new Wal-Mart Super Center, their pride lies in a 25 year old girl. As you drive towards the small, you can not help but notice Miranda Lambert face plastered on billboards welcoming you to her hometown. Lambert use to be just a home town girl with a big voice, but now people all across the country are singing along with her sitting in their car.

How can you really honor this singer with out having a “Miranda Lambert Store”? I do not think that you can. As you drive through the old country stores of downtown Lindale, you find the corner store dedicated to the town hero. What is more exciting than a store full of merchandise of a country star? You can buy anything that your heart desires; candles, shirts, and of course, music!

Why not decorate your home around your town’s very own country singer? Get information on her tours, and become a true country singer fan!

Chandler Family Chiropractic Near Tyler

January 31st, 2010

Chandler Family Chiropractic

323 Hwy 31 E (PO Box 1894)
Chandler, TX 75758
Office: (903) 849-2200
Fax: (903) 849-2600

Chandler Family Chiropractic, Acupuncture & Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression is located in Chandler, TX directly off of Highway 31 E. It is only ten miles from Loop 323 in Tyler. It is easy to miss, as the town is very small and their sign is not very pronounced. Several times we have driven right by it. A good tip: It’s right across from the Mexican restaurant and within the main section of town. If you find that you’ve passed all of the gas stations and fast food restaurants, you’ve gone too far.

Dr. Charles R. Dixon has been serving the Tyler-area community since February 2001. His services include spinal decompression therapy, acupuncture (with or without needles), massage therapy, heat and ice therapy, electric stimulus therapy and more. His staff includes his wife and niece who run the front office and massage therapist Mindy Terrell.

Dr. Dixon runs his family practice with skill and enthusiasm. As a patient, I have been shown genuine kindness from all the staff and I have only good things to say about the quality of treatment. I am one of the many patients who used to be in chronic back pain, but that pain is now history. My husband has also been pain-free for months. He had horrible low back pain to the point where he would fall over.

I am always greeted at the door with warm and welcoming smiles. More than once Dr. Dixon has met me at my car and carried my daughter’s infant car seat for me to the office to save me from heavy lifting. He has repeatedly worked late or into his lunch break for us. Once on a Friday evening he even came back to the office after hours to adjust me because he didn’t want my weekend to be miserable.

I first came to know of Chandler Family Chiropractic through a friend of mine. I had been in pain for a year and had never gone to see a chiropractor because at the time I was in school, uninsured and could not afford it. This friend of mine gave me Dr. Dixon’s phone number, which I assumed was the number to his office. It was actually his cell phone number, and Dr. Dixon himself answered and discussed treatment for my back pain. He assured me that he would do his very best to make me pain-free, payment or not, and set up an appointment right then and there.

When I went into the office I was pleasantly surprised by how charming the little office was. The patients all seemed content and relaxed. The staff was more than simply welcoming. They made us feel like family by the time our visit was over, and they sent me home pain-free to boot! My husband and I have been his patients and friends ever since.

I am so thankful for the good care Dr. Dixon has afforded us over the years. He and his wife are good people who have a heartfelt compassion for the needs of others. They go above and beyond what is required or expected of chiropractic care in their hospitality and even in their very thorough and comprehensive medical care. It seems that they would give their services away if there was another way to support their family. They are some of the most giving people I know. I highly recommend his office to anyone who is in need of chiropractic care.

KLTV Tyler Texas, Channel 7

January 6th, 2010

If you are looking for a trustworthy news station in East Texas, there is one news source which stands head and shoulders above the rest: KLTV, channel 7.

KLTV Tyler has dominated the local TV scene. I remember growing up with the “bunny ears” antenna, and there was only one channel we knew we could pull in: Channel 7. It was an ABC station, so we could watch all the TGIF nonsense our young minds could want. The other station, channel 56, was on that smaller UHF dial, and would come in with a snowy distortion. And channel 51, too, was too weak to watch regularly.

Years later, nobody is thinking about snowy reception anymore, nor of the limited access to more obscure channels. Almost everyone has cable or satellite. So maybe it is the higher budget, or maybe it is just tradition. Whatever the reason, KLTV Channel 7 is still the crystal clear choice for the vast majority of East Texans after so many years. [ad#large-blog-block]

What makes KLTV better? Their news programming is simply lightyears ahead of its competitors in reliability and in professionalism.

One of the most trusted men in the city has to be meteorologist Mark Scirto. Mark has served as the channel 7’s peppy weatherman for years, and East Texans routinely berate him or laude him, depending on whether they actually enjoy the weather outside. But as Mark will tell you, he does not make the weather. He does, however, give a fine weather forecast in an always upbeat manner. No weather man is perfect, of course, but Mark’s forecasts are clear and just about as accurate as you are going to find.

In addition to Mark Scirto, Channel 7 also has superior anchor men. Clint Yeats has been there forever. Clint served as the station’s chief anchorman for years, and is still with the station, co-anchoring the morning program and serving as a managing editor. But everyone knows that Joe Terrel is the best anchorman in the city. Joe has led the evening newscasts for many years. His passion, clarity, and humor have endeared Joe to the entire city. For most of his tenure, Joe has worked opposite co-anchor Gillian Sherridan. The two shared a wonderful rapport. Even though Sherridan moved on recently to CBS 19, Joe and company still rule the roost.

KLTV’s sports is now led by Kansas native Ryan Peterson, who serves ably despite being a bigger fan of the Denver Broncos than the Dallas Cowboys. Sports is another area of domination for KLTV Channel 7. Try as they might, NBC 56 and CBS 19 have never been able to come close.

The KLTV reporters also do a fine job. Joan Hallmark, specifically, has been a Tyler favorite for decades, airing her human interest segment “Proud of East Texas” to highlight some of Tyler’s many bright spots.

In short, KLTV is still the best news station in Tyler Texas. It’s not even close.
