The Shed Cafe in Edom

June 30th, 2012

I don’t know whether or not we’ve ever written about the Shed in Edom. But being that I had lunch there today, and enjoyed it, I thought make certain we hadn’t missed the boat on this one. For those that don’t know, Edom is another town located between Tyler and Chandler. It’s long been a little arts and antiques community. In fact a visit to The Shed, or its cross the street rival the Edom Bakery and Grill, bears out the truth of that assertion. The town is a haven for old hippies, artists, cowboys, motorcyclists and even big city sophisticates, all of whom eat at the aforementioned establishments, which help make Edom worthy of its place on the map.

Legend has it, (or at least it’s been reported to me), that The Shed and The Edom bakery and Grill, are owned and operated by rival members of the same family and are in an only partially friendly competition. Each eatery has its devotees but The Shed has been in business for more than thirty five years, and seems to command greater reputation. I can’t really comment on the Bakery’s menu since I have yet to try it. Perhaps when I get around to visiting I’ll consider allowing for equal time. I have on the other hand, visited The Shed on a couple of occasions and feel comfortable offering a rudimentary report. It’s good.

Ok, so it’s better than good. It wouldn’t have lasted for more than a quarter century in Edom if it wasn’t. The menu consists largely of staple southern and “home –style” cooking. I especially recommend their breakfast menu, with particular attention to their biscuits and gravy.  The ambiance, (which may itself be a bit too sophisticated a term), is authentic country and when coupled with the unique cross- section clientele, and the town setting, the décor is a perfect match.  One caveat, The Shed is always busy. Visitors should allow themselves a bit of waiting time. But don’t worry; it will be well worth it. For more info on The Shed stop by their web page: http://www.theshedcafe.com/.

Panera Bread Now in Tyler and Now Open!

Join the restaurant coupon list for the Tyler area

Panera BreadPanera Bread is a very good sandwich shop with a few bakery items that are pretty tasty too. My wife and most girls love this place because the bread is so good. She almost lost it once she saw them building the place in Tyler next to Chuy’s.

They make their bread fresh there at the restaurant and it has kind of a sour dough bread chewy texture. They have different types of bread so it doesn’t all taste the same so you might have to order there a few times before you get a good idea of the place.

My wife really likes their chicken salad and I can’t even remember what it was I ordered but I liked it okay.

I am not a huge bread nut but the place is good and worth a visit.

The Donut Shop

March 4th, 2011

The Donut Palace
A donut shop, simply a bakery specializing in sweet fried pastries, infamous in American pop culture. The Donut Palace is Tylers donut shop, with multiple locations and great prices they have served the hungry starting at five every morning with fresh donuts and eclairs. They even have that classic southern favorite “pig’s in a blanket” with cheese or cheese and jalapeno for the brave.

The Donut Palace may not be the best, or be the cleanest, or have the most massive selection of flavors, but one thing is for sure and that is that they’re every where. Donut Palace’s are conveniently existent as a donut source for Tyler residents. The Donut Palace fills the donut shaped void in Tyler left by Baskin Robins long ago in the days of twenty four hour donuts.

But there’s no point lamenting our lost donuts, for Donut Palace has picked up the torch of fried breakfast rings and carried the stomachs of Tylers hungry and given much needed life blood to our courageous police force.

The donut options may be limited but be grateful for the ten or so varieties, some people will never be so lucky to taste Boston creme filled, blueberry cake or even strawberry with sprinkles. The service at Donut Palace is fast and polite, you can be sure that you will be in and out with your donuts and beverage of choice as efficiently as possible.

Brookshires Grocery Store

February 8th, 2010

Brookshires in Tyler Texas

100 Rice Road
Tyler
903 561 7943

This family-friendly Christian owned and operated grocery store in the center of the popular shopping area in Tyler is a delight to shop at.

As you walk into the store you will be surprised at the quality and variety of fruit and vegetables on sale. Much of the produce available is organic and grown locally too. Look out for samples of their seasonal items.

Before you start to shop you might want to treat yourself to a gourmet coffee – sold just inside the door on the left at the coffee bar. You will notice that there are many who take advantage of the little cafe area there too. If you have time you could stop and drink your coffee while you look at the weekly paper containing details of the latest special offers at Brookshires. Of particular note is the meat section -they have the most amazing deals on particular cuts of meat and these offers change weekly.

Continue on through the store stopping perhaps at the excellent delicatessen or the bakery section where you can buy delicious breads of all sorts of types and containing healthy grains, baked in store. The meat section is very good too and the seafood is one of the best in a supermarket around here.

As for the rest of the store – it is clearly laid out and you will find all sorts of goodies here that you won’t see at Walmart.

Brookshires tries to cater for all palates and budgets and this is reflected in the choice available. ‘Food Club’ is their own brand of goods. If you come from ‘out of town’ like me then be sure to look for the International section where you can buy various familiar food items from Europe. There is also a significant Asian and Mexican section.

The food at Brookshires is slightly more pricey than at Walmart – though the special offers favor comparably. However, the shopping experience is so much nicer and the variety of goods they stock is amazing for East Texas. I have to add that the customer care is second to none – all the staff are so helpful and attentive to your needs. They make you feel valued and important here.

Don’t forget there is a bank instore, a photo shop and an excellent pharmacy, where you can make use of $4 generic prescriptions. There is even a drive-thru pick-up service.

One quick word about prices – there is a dual pricing system – one for the regular shopper and the other for visitors. If you plan to shop at Brookshires more than once, get yourself a ‘Thank you card’ by applying at the cash register or customer services. This means that you qualify for the lower prices and special offers. Don’t worry, they won’t bombard you with junk mail and they won’t give your personal details to any other company. You must present this card when checking out to receive the lower prices.

As you leave the store, enjoy the chance to have your bags packed for you (you can request brown bags rather than plastic or use our own and receive 5c back for each one used). Your cart will then be loaded and your shopping placed in your car for you. Don’t even think about tipping for this – it is all part of the everyday service at Brookshires.

One other thing to note – kids are welcomed at Brookshires. There are mini shopping carts for kid’s use and at the bakery they will happily offer your child a free cookie (while you drool over the amazing cakes on sale).
Altogether a nice experience – shopping at Brookshires in Rice Road is to be recommended.
