High school baseball playoffs

April 28th, 2013

The school year is winding down and that means so is high school baseball. However, those teams who are still alive are the best of the best as playoff time is actually here and many East Texas high schools are fighting to go to the state championship game.

It starts withclass 5A where the Robert E. Lee Red Raiders of Tyler who are set to take on the Garland Sachse Mustangs in a best-of-three-game series. First pitch of the first game is slated for Friday at 7 p.m. at Mike Carter Field in Tyler. Game two is set to take place starting at noon on Saturday at Sachse High School in Garland. If the two teams split the first two games, there will be a third game to decide on a winner immediately following the game two.

Also in 5A, Longview is slated to take on Garland Naaman in another best-of-three series. The first game is slated for Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Longview High School while the second game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start. Game three, if necessary will follow game two.

Whitehouse will represent Class 4A when it goes up against White Oak in another best-of-three series. The first game is slated for 7:30 Thursday at Red Oak High School while the second game will be 7:30 Friday night at Whitehouse. If a third game is necessary, it will be held Saturday at noon.

Class 3A will see Van and Bullard go head-to-head in one game. First pitch is slated for Thursday at 7 p.m. at Kilgore’s Driller Park. Mineola and Spring Hill will also represent Class 3A when they go head-to-head in one game, Friday at 7 p.m. at Kilgore’s Driller Park.

TJC Baseball in full swing

February 28th, 2013

tjcBaseball season is underway. In fact, if you don’t want to wait for Major League Baseball to start or you don’t want to drive all the way to Arlington to watch the Rangers, you can always catch some quality baseball in Tyler. Granted, it’s not the same quality but you can save yourself the drive, parking, gas and price of a ticket by watching the Tyler Junior College Apaches at Mike Carter Field.

The Apaches are already 17 games into the season as they hold an overall record of 14-3. They’re 6-2 at home, 6-0 on the road and 2-1 from neutral sites.

There have been several players in the big leagues who got their starts at TJC so you never know who might be the next big thing.

There are several big players to keep your eye on at TJC. In just 40 at bats, Derek VOgl has17 hits and a batting average of .425. Blaise Warrick leads the team in home runs with six and RBIs with 19. Richard Tordsen’s 22 hits and 14 runs are the most of any current Apache and can be a nightmare for opposing pitchers.

The Apaches are slated to play a double header Saturday at Weatherford College. They will return home two days later to play host to Texas College at 7 p.m.

Texas Rangers AL West Champions

October 4th, 2011

The Texas Rangers once again are AL West Champions and with each new advance they bump it up a notch to take on a new challenger. My call is that the Tigers will beat the Yankees tonight which means the Rangers and the Tigers will face each other.

Both of these teams are quite good but I think Beltre showed us tonight just what kind of surprises the Rangers can put up when they need to. This Rangers team has the ability to spur each other into action when they need it the most and I think that is what you will see when the Rangers and Tigers face off with each other.

Hamilton remains the 3rd highest batting average with Beltre 2nd and Gentry having the highest in the AL Division Series. The Tigers will be a hard match up but I am sure there will be some big surprises once again.

To read more about the Rangers and their advance to the ALCS please read these very enthusiastic fans and bloggers of the Texas Rangers who both happen to live here in Tyler.
