Big Lots is a store in a category of it’s own. It’s definitely a place for bargain seekers, rather like a big scale Dollar General but with more branded items and ‘end of range’ items from other stores. They sell, it seems, a bit of everything, from home décor and low priced furniture to groceries, toys and gardening items. There is a big health and beauty section, lots of storage and cleaning products, baby equipment, a few shoes and clothes and a nice selection of cards. There is always a good seasonal display too. Frequently the bargains spill out onto the sidewalk outside the store too!

I don’t shop at Big Lots regularly but I always seem to fill up a cart when I do go in and I come out happy. There’s something about browsing for bargains that is good therapy. I have a friend who goes there weekly – she is drawn in by the bread which is exceptionally good value apparently, and the snacks like pretzels, chips and cereal bars for school lunches – but she seems to leave there with lots of assorted extra purchases too. She is definitely a serious bargain hunter and scans the weekly ad from Big Lots to get the best deals. Big Lots has a rewards scheme called the Buzz Club for regular customers like her – you can check out the details at www.biglots.com.

The store itself is not particularly attractive. On entering you can get a cart and see the latest items in front of you, and the aisles behind that, with fully laden shelves of ‘stuff’ are in a vague semblance of order but not that easy to navigate around. It feels a bit like a warehouse. At the back of the store is a not very pleasant restroom and a clearance rack for extra savings on mainly damaged goods. Nearer the front is the furniture. It didn’t look that great to be honest, but perhaps there are good deals to be had on some of the items available. I didn’t think much of the clothing section either but the prices were low.

I can’t remember many of the things I bought at Big Lots – I guess it was mainly groceries, stationery and household items plus a few cards, but I did find a great deal on games for the Wii. I was tempted by the candles and photo frames but not by the toys which didn’t seem to be particularly great quality and quite highly priced. Music from the 80s accompanied me whilst I shopped. There was only one girl at the checkout and she didn’t have the keys to the cabinet for the video games. After a while she managed to pick the lock and I made my purchases. That is the kind of place that Big Lots is!

If you have time to browse, a visit to Big Lots can be quite fun. The things for sale vary quite a lot from week to week so no visit to Big Lots will ever be the same. However, don’t expect it to be a Macy’s experience (or even a Walmart) – you’ll be disappointed!

Oh and by the way, Big Lots has another location on S. Broadway opposite the mall.

I love Big Lots. I am a huge fan of the concept of selling overstocked and discontinued items at an awesome price. They keep a regular supply of most items you would find in a small convenience store such as trash bags and socks, but a large part of their inventory is constantly changing. They always have soaps and shampoos, but maybe one day you’ll find a really nice brand for cheap and not the next week.

Regardless of the inventory changes, one thing stays constant. The prices at Big Lots are always cheaper than comparable stores. It also maintains the fun feel of treasure hunting almost like shopping at thrift stores.

This Big Lots is located on South Broadway across the street from the Mall and right next door to Robert E. Lee High School. It shares a parking lot with Michael’s, the arts and crafts store, and T.G.I.Friday’s, along with a dozen other smaller single location stores. This location is a great convenience for when you want to go to several stores on the same trip into town. I go to this one when I am looking for gifts, because if I can’t find something good at Big Lots I can head over to Michael’s or the half-price used book store in the same lot. The problem with this store’s location is the traffic. I can only assume that the intersection of South Broadway and Loop 323 is the busiest intersection in Tyler. This happens to be where Big Lots is located. Almost any time of the day, it is hard to navigate through this area. If you are traveling via the loop, you have to be prepared to choose the turning lane a few stoplights before you get to the intersection. Once in the parking lot, you still can’t relax until you have stopped, because this lot seems to be a collecting spot for all of the impatient people in Tyler.

A fun addition to your trips to Big Lots in the Spring and Summer is that right outside of Big Lots going towards Loop 323 there are usually a couple of guys selling produce. They’ll often be selling watermelons and oranges and then whatever else happens to be in season.

Even if you aren’t in the mood for fruit, these guys will usually give you a huge East Texas smile and greeting just for acknowledging them.

While, the other Big Lots store in Tyler has a full furniture show room, this store location does not. This branch sells furniture to be assembled at home. They have book shelves, entertainment centers, glider rocking chairs, small dressers and other things along this line. Most of these are very attractive and afford-ably but are made of the non-durable press board. Though, for something like a small bookshelf, this store offers almost exactly what you need and will beat the price of most other stores with similar products.

I’ve also been impressed with their small electronics section near the front. They have standard computer accessories like mice and USB cables. This section has regular and rechargeable batteries. My favorite item that I’ve found here, though, is a set of burnable CDs.

A couple of times that I’ve gone, they’ve had incredible deals on blank CDs. The problem is you have to be willing to check and understand that with this kind of store there is not much guarantee that they will have the item you wanted.

One last feature about this location I should fill you in on is their bedding section. If you are in the market for new sheets for your bed, then check out Big Lots first. The section can be a little messy because most of the sheet sets are the only one like them in the store. It should be divided into bed size, but look around in the whole section. You can sometimes find really high thread count sheets sets for less than half the cost of other retail stores. The bottom line is that you should give Big Lots a few shots. Visit the store a few different times and at least see if it is a good fit for your personality and shopping needs. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Pet Land

January 16th, 2010

Tyler Pet Land is located at 4512 S Broadway Ave., Tyler, Texas 75703. If you own a pet, I am sure you have already been introduced to Pet Land and know what it is about. It’s like going to the mall, only this is for your pet. Whatever the pet they have what you need for it. Love exotic fishes..you can find plenty of them there.

Bird lovers you are in for a treat because they have what you are looking for. Reptiles too and much more. Anytime you want a pet but you can’t have one because your parents won’t allow you….than maybe convince them about taking you to Pet Land and spend time petting all the animals they have. Besides, your parent’s can’t get mad at you when you leave….and those animals remain there.

It’s a great blessing to have a Pet Land around here with knowledgeable people who work there and love animals, and know what to advise you about with your loved pets. For most people they are not pets…but more like their little baby. I should know because I have owned several small dogs that I thought of them more like my children than a pet.

Pets should be loved and well taken care of. Adoption is available there if you find yourself lonely and in need of a friend. Dogs and cats make pretty good companions. They offer unconditional love at all times…no matter what your day was like…they always look forward for you to come home so they can have you pet them and feed them.

Surrounding Pet Land there are other stores, such as: Big Lots, Michael’s, China King and the best thing is a Dollar Store very close. Pet Land is open Monday through Saturday 10a.m. to 8p.m. and on Sunday 12p.m. to 6p.m.

Big Lots On Beckham In Tyler TX

January 15th, 2010

Big Lots is an often looked over or even despised treasure. Looking at the outside of a standard Big Lots you might think you’ve stumbled upon just another depressing grocery store, but you would be wrong. However, the stores do often open up in buildings that used to be grocery stores. The stores are worth looking into. Since being founded in 1967, the Big Lots corporation has expanded to having about fourteen hundred stores in forty-seven states. The thing I never expected to discover is that the Big Lots corporation did over four billion dollars in sales last year! They are a serious force in the retail industry.

The location on Beckham in Tyler is an all time favorite of mine. Like most Big Lots stores the outside has nothing to offer the senses, unless you are particularly drawn to the color orange or large signs. The parking lot is rather depressing and doesn’t have the most attractive neighboring stores. In fact, the inside isn’t exactly appealing either, but it does have a lot to offer in terms of merchandise and surprisingly their sales and support staff.

I first went to this location because they were the only one of the two stores in Tyler that offered a full showroom of large furniture. They sell couches, loveseats, recliners, over-stuffed chairs, ottomans and even mattress sets. My past experiences with Big Lots had only been to find cheap but nice presents for people or attempts at lowering my grocery bill. The company has never been a disappointment to me, but they had never wowed me either…that is, until I went to this location.

My sister and brother-in-law had purchase a couch and matching chair-and-a-half a several months prior to my trip. Ever time my wife and I visited their house we were amazed at how nice their couches were and durable to boot. The furniture was nicer and more comfortable than almost any couch I had ever experienced, and I have sat on some very expensive couches. The crazy thing was that they had bought them at the Big Lots in Tyler, TX. We almost couldn’t believe it. Then they told us that they had only paid about seven hundred dollars total and had managed to pay for it using an in store financing plan with low or no interest.

We walked into this store hoping that we could find something comparable to the set my siblings had found. We were instantly impressed with how many pieces of assembled furniture were available for testing. We began sitting on couch after couch, truly enjoying the process. They all seemed so nice and the price tags were very comforting. Of course, they were higher than yard sale prices, but we were tired of ugly dog-destroyed sofas that were free or cost ten dollars. We were ready for grown up furniture, and the store had it. The experience became even better when we spotted the very couch and chair-and-a-half that we had already fallen in love with at my siblings’ house.

The sales associate was beyond nice and helpful. He told us his personal experiences with the couches we were considering and helped us decide on the set we bought. I asked how long it would take to get them in, and he said that they had them in the back. He offered financing if we needed it and mentioned that they could deliver them. Being the penny pincher that I am, I called some friends and borrowed a truck to pick them up by myself. I went back to the store within an hour and the associate greeted me with a smile, called two more guys and walked with me to the back of the store. The three employees joked and grunted as they lifted the couches into my borrowed truck and helped to tie them down.

I brought the couches home and have been constantly pleased. As I type this, I am sitting incredibly comfortably on a couch that was beyond affordable. I tell everyone I know to go to Big Lots when they tell me they are looking for furniture. Almost everyone responds the same. “No. Not Big Lots! How much did you say you paid?” Big Lots will surprise you if you are looking to save money but still have quality. Just think of better things while you walk in and wait to make your judgment once you’ve checked out their merchandise.

Tyler Big Lots

January 12th, 2010

We have two locations in Tyler TX for Big Lots, one is off of Beckham and the other towards the mall. I love going to Big Lots because they have everything you could possibly need or want and the prices for the most part are reasonable, especially if you are looking for movies. Big Lots is the place because it’s the cheapest I have ever seen anywhere. They have movies ranging anywhere from $3 to $10 dollars. The new releases are the ones that cost a little more or if you find a series, that usually costs a little more. I once bought the series, Life Goes On, and I paid $4 dollars for it. That is just an example of the things that you can find there.

I also found little Christmas ornaments for a little tree that I have. They have food, clothes, personal needs, bedding, some furniture and many more things. I could not even start to list everything at Big Lots even if I wanted to because they have so many categories of things to buy there. The service for the most part is good. It is a place where if you are looking for a store where you could find some inexpensive gifts for someone, then I would suggest going to Big Lots. It is always a convenient thing to have a Big Lots around. Big Lots is usually surrounding other stores.

The store off of Beckham is next to the General Dollar Store and the Shoe Warehouse. The other one that is close to the mall on the South side is located by Michael’s, Pet Land, Dollar Store, and a Chinese Restaurant. You could definitely take a whole day to experience the bargains available at Big Lots. You would have your shopping, entertaining and food done all in one place.
