Furniture Stores in Tyler TX, a Consumer Review

June 7th, 2011

furniture stores in Tyler TXRecently my cousin and I went looking around for a recliner, but it wasn’t exactly a hard target search. We were merely browsing a couple of furniture stores looking for any deals. As a single guy, I don’t invest much money in furniture. Aside from some pretty nice book cases I haven’t purchased much at all actually. Fortunately, I’ve been blessed with quite a few relatively expensive pieces by both friends and family over the years. I bring this up in the interest of disclosing my own lack of knowledge of the furniture business. We visited two businesses: the much vaunted Southside Furniture, and Bassett.

Southside has been in the middle of a clearance sale. My understanding is that they’re in the process of going out of business. (I could be wrong on this point as I’ve heard a couple explanations for why they’re clearing their inventory, so if any readers know for sure, I’d welcome your comments). I do find it odd that they’d be closing as they only recently changed their name from Ashley’s back to Southside. At any rate, their selection was decent but even with the forty percent discount the prices seemed kind of high. I’m open to the possibility that it’s just my frugality, and the prices were in fact perfectly reasonable. I’m so accustomed to trying to do more with less that I don’t always perceive the great deal. They did have some really nice pieces but even some of the chairs that I personally found rather unattractive were up around four to five hundred dollars. The store itself was really nice by the way, very large and open.

I was less impressed with Bassett, but I’m completely sure why. First off I guess, because their selection of recliners (which happened to be what my cousin was in the market for), was quite a bit smaller. Their products overall were nice, but the store had a much more crowded feel. Both shops had some huge couches and chairs! I don’t know if this is the latest trend in couches or not but some of the bigger models had arm rests in the middle that included cup holders. Personally I’m not a fan of this feature. It brought back too many memories of riding in the back of my parent’s big Starcraft van. Just thinking about it brings on that old nauseous feeling.

At the end of the day neither shop had exactly what my cousin wanted, for what he was willing to pay. Both stops are worth a look see however. I saw a number of reviewers on line complaining about the customer service, but at least on this occasion that was not our experience. The staff at both places was perfectly friendly, offered to help, but let us look around without pestering us.

Tyler SKYVUE

January 17th, 2010

Outdoor movie drive in, Tyler TX
Tyler SKYVUE is our drive-in theater that is located at 10713 Hwy 69 North, Tyler, Texas 75706. Just three minutes north of Tyler’s Loop 323 and four minutes south of Lindale’s Interstate 20. The cost is $6 per adult and $4 per child that is 5-12 years old…younger than that are free. It’s a great place to go if you want to watch a movie, but in a different way. You get to watch two movies and they are newer releases. I enjoy going because you can take your own chairs and sit in the outside. You can comment on the movie, if you want and won’t get in trouble by talking in a closed room. You can also take whatever snacks and drinks you want, which saves you money. They have a place where you can buy snacks and drinks if you would rather than bringing your own.

Movies theaters are a great entertainment and how about a different experience with a drive-in theater? Going to an outdoor theater is very fun and interesting. You have to wait until it gets dark outside before they start the movies, which is usually somewhere around 7p.m. or so. They usually end by midnight or later because its two movies you are watching….so you get two for the price of one. Skyvue is a great place for you to go out and have some fun with your friends and/or family and not worry about going broke while you do it.

Skyvue isn’t far off, whether you live in Lindale or Tyler, it is worth the drive to see a movie. This makes a great gift…to pick up some friends and take them as a group to see two movies for the price of one, we did that and ended up having a blast and decided it was worth doing more.

Big Lots On Beckham In Tyler TX

January 15th, 2010

Big Lots is an often looked over or even despised treasure. Looking at the outside of a standard Big Lots you might think you’ve stumbled upon just another depressing grocery store, but you would be wrong. However, the stores do often open up in buildings that used to be grocery stores. The stores are worth looking into. Since being founded in 1967, the Big Lots corporation has expanded to having about fourteen hundred stores in forty-seven states. The thing I never expected to discover is that the Big Lots corporation did over four billion dollars in sales last year! They are a serious force in the retail industry.

The location on Beckham in Tyler is an all time favorite of mine. Like most Big Lots stores the outside has nothing to offer the senses, unless you are particularly drawn to the color orange or large signs. The parking lot is rather depressing and doesn’t have the most attractive neighboring stores. In fact, the inside isn’t exactly appealing either, but it does have a lot to offer in terms of merchandise and surprisingly their sales and support staff.

I first went to this location because they were the only one of the two stores in Tyler that offered a full showroom of large furniture. They sell couches, loveseats, recliners, over-stuffed chairs, ottomans and even mattress sets. My past experiences with Big Lots had only been to find cheap but nice presents for people or attempts at lowering my grocery bill. The company has never been a disappointment to me, but they had never wowed me either…that is, until I went to this location.

My sister and brother-in-law had purchase a couch and matching chair-and-a-half a several months prior to my trip. Ever time my wife and I visited their house we were amazed at how nice their couches were and durable to boot. The furniture was nicer and more comfortable than almost any couch I had ever experienced, and I have sat on some very expensive couches. The crazy thing was that they had bought them at the Big Lots in Tyler, TX. We almost couldn’t believe it. Then they told us that they had only paid about seven hundred dollars total and had managed to pay for it using an in store financing plan with low or no interest.

We walked into this store hoping that we could find something comparable to the set my siblings had found. We were instantly impressed with how many pieces of assembled furniture were available for testing. We began sitting on couch after couch, truly enjoying the process. They all seemed so nice and the price tags were very comforting. Of course, they were higher than yard sale prices, but we were tired of ugly dog-destroyed sofas that were free or cost ten dollars. We were ready for grown up furniture, and the store had it. The experience became even better when we spotted the very couch and chair-and-a-half that we had already fallen in love with at my siblings’ house.

The sales associate was beyond nice and helpful. He told us his personal experiences with the couches we were considering and helped us decide on the set we bought. I asked how long it would take to get them in, and he said that they had them in the back. He offered financing if we needed it and mentioned that they could deliver them. Being the penny pincher that I am, I called some friends and borrowed a truck to pick them up by myself. I went back to the store within an hour and the associate greeted me with a smile, called two more guys and walked with me to the back of the store. The three employees joked and grunted as they lifted the couches into my borrowed truck and helped to tie them down.

I brought the couches home and have been constantly pleased. As I type this, I am sitting incredibly comfortably on a couch that was beyond affordable. I tell everyone I know to go to Big Lots when they tell me they are looking for furniture. Almost everyone responds the same. “No. Not Big Lots! How much did you say you paid?” Big Lots will surprise you if you are looking to save money but still have quality. Just think of better things while you walk in and wait to make your judgment once you’ve checked out their merchandise.

Currents French Cuisine Restaurant Tyler Texas

January 10th, 2010

Currents is a French and American Cuisine in Tyler Texas. It serves some of the finest entrees in Tyler Texas. If you enjoy French food then you will love Currents. The food was delicious. The presentation and atmosphere was excellent. The restaurant has unusual French antique furniture and overlooks a peaceful valley and woods.

The music was romantic and relaxing. The service was definitely top notch. The waiter escorted us to our table, pulled out chairs for all the ladies in the group, made sure our drinks never emptied, gave us great recommendations on food and wine, and didn’t get a thing wrong on the orders.

The price is a little on the high side (about $20 per meal) but is definitely worth it. I think that Currents is a great place for a date or other special event. Currents restaurant offers wine tasting and has a menu of some of the best tasting food in Texas. In fact they were in the Texas Monthly magazine. Currents restaurant is off of Fleishel near Front Street. For directions and more information, check out their website currentstyler.com.

Youth With A Mission Ministry

January 8th, 2010

If you’ve ever wondered what there is to get involved with to make your faith based in something big, here is an answer. YWAM is a Christian organization that focuses on discipling people to be able to profess who they are in Christ in their every day actions and attitudes as a testimony to the true changes of Christ.

There are over 166 bases like this one all over the world, this is one of MANY. This base is located in Lindale just off of HWY 16. It is split among two locations. One in Lindale and one more directly in Tyler Texas. There are about 400 people working with this ministry currently and many many students.

There are many opportunities to get involved with this ministry, they organize several functions you can be a part of if you would like. Take Action is an event for Youth that takes place every year, the production is done here, then travels to Houston and Chicago. This is a whole day event that focuses on bringing real issues to light in a teens life and offers support and discipleship to begin a new work in their lives. It’s a production of music, dancing, acting and media. Such a sight to see and is well worth the investment to go to or send your kids to.

The location in Lindale also dedicates part of its time to facilitating Dwell nights. A Dwell night is a night were people gather, from YWAM and friends in town, to dwell/soak in the presence of God. The gym is cleared of chairs and tables, rugs and pillows laid about, lights dimmed and stations placed around the edges of the room that highlight prayer needs or art inspiration. There is a time of worship together and waiting on the Lord, sometimes there are speakers but its mostly worship.

These times have proven to be so rich and full of Jesus. A time of being ministered to and ministering to others. Anyone is welcome to come, they usually happen about once a month. The YWAM web page will have dates of these particular events.

Something else you might be interested in getting involved with are SST’s. These are camps held in the summer for teens. Hard core spiritual time with God, adventure challenges and outreach to Mexico (depending on which week you go, other options are available). Its basically three weeks of awesomeness. If you are looking for an intense and real Christian experience near Tyler, TX this summer then this is what you need to look into.

SST stands for Summer of Service and Training. Hundreds flow in every summer and hundreds flow out and most of them leave with a flame still burning with the desire to know God more and to make him know. There are stories after stories of teens leaving and coming back, going into missions, transforming their schools and transforming their families. This is something real! Anyone is welcome to apply and come… you are invited!

Any of these events listed are listed on the YWAM Tyler website with tons more information and videos to watch and testimonies to read. Please go check it out.
