Tyler’s School Zones Go Back into Effect on the 22nd

August 14th, 2011

In case you missed it, summer is winding down (although temperatures outside don’t yet reflect the fact), and the fall school year is about to start. Some of the area private schools are starting the 17th, but most public institutions are kicking off on the 22nd. With this in mind the City of Tyler is reminding its citizens that starting Monday, its school zones will be going back into action. Area commuters would probably be wise to alter their routes if necessary and or possible. The zones can be a source of frustration if you find yourself in a time crunch on the way to work in the morning. They will be in operation from approximately 7:30 to 9:00 am, and 2:30 to 4:45 pm, depending on the school and its hours of operation. Different schools have plans to deal with traffic flow, but the city is reminding drivers to be alert at pedestrian crosswalks, and to look out for crossing guards directing traffic.

It’s also worth mentioning that cell phone use is prohibited in any and school zones. Financial penalties so these offences are much higher for those ticketing in Tyler’s school zones. For more info on the TISD schedules or that of Grace Christian School, (evidently that particular zone can be a headache for those who have to contend with it), go to www.tylerisd.org or www.gracetyler.org .

Update on the Double D in Tyler TX

Double D's in Tyler TX

Double D Ranch in Tyler Texas

Ok, not to kick a dead horse here, but it seems there is yet more news on the on- going fight over the new Double D Ranch trying to open here in Tyler. Judge Christi Kennedy’s of the 114th District Court, has granted a restraining order requested by Toys R Us which bars the establishment from advertising (in the form of signs and banners), or hiring a “Scantily Clad,” wait staff. Does Scantily Clad have a legal definition? How Scanty is too scanty? The ruling said that the location of the new restaurant would do irreparable harm to the toy store.

Look I’m not comfortable being on this side of the argument but I just don’t believe it. Is the D.D. tacky? Yes. It is. Would I go there? No I wouldn’t. Is it legal? Yep, afraid so folks. Bad taste is not against the law. At the end of the day, I don’t know whether or not the Ranch will open for business here in Tyler, and honestly I don’t much care. I think the whole case is much ado about nothing. It’s not a hill I want to die on. I just hate to see citizens fighting these sorts of battles in the courts. Is the Passing of Tyler’s Jail Bond Good or Bad?

May 17th, 2011

After the weekend’s vote in favor of the new jail bond proposal, I must admit that I’m still unsure what to think. Local politics has certainly made some strange bedfellows. Much to my surprise, many people I know and respect in our area have come out in support of the modest tax increase in order to finally put the prison issue to rest. The new prison will cost thirty- five million, but proponents say that some of those costs can be made up by housing state and federal prisoners from outside our area.

Even Tyler’s budget hawks have been divided on the issue. The “Grassroots America” organization supported the measure, while the Tyler Tea Party opposed it. Personally I certainly recognize the need to ease prison overcrowding, but as a Tylerite, I can’t help but feel somewhat duped. Every time the city has pushed for some new bond or other, citizens have said “no we can’t afford it!” whether it was school bonds or the continually re-emerging issue of a new jail. Well, in the latter case persistence has finally paid off. I wish I could say that I trusted our local bureaucrats to take the most frugal approach with our money, but sorry to say, I just don’t.

At the end of the day the passing of the jail bond may not be entirely bad news. Certainly building the new jail will have positive implications, namely local jobs and fresh outside funds. But I’m concerned that every other local committee is going to employ the same kind of grind us down, tactics the pro-jail people used. My advice is this; keep your hand on your wallet folks! There are always going to be things we need to buy or build. But let’s prioritize. There’s nothing wrong with making do with less, now and again!

Power Balance bracelet had to admit they are a scam

January 5th, 2011

For those who read this blog you may have noticed we have written about the Power Balance bracelet as well as the EFX and many other bracelets that supposedly balance your body or do some other health benefit.

What is the Power Balance Scam?

Many celebrities and athletes use these bracelets and wear them out in public. People like P. Diddy, Robert De Niro, David Beckham and others have been caught on camera wearing these superstitious things.

Well the Australian government has asked for Power Balance to officially apologize for making false claims to the citizens of Australia and offer a refund.

Yesterday a class action lawsuit was issued in California against Power Balance bracelets as well. This is a typical Kevin Trudeau type of thing where a company starts selling something and saying all kinds of claims knowing they will get hit with class action lawsuits, attorney general investigations and so forth only to do it all over again.

I am sure Power Balance knew they would have to pay for scamming eventually but several people probably raked in money handsomely in the process.

Power Balance bracelets is now on record in the country of Australia for admitting that their bracelet really is the scam I have been saying it is for several months now.

Unfortunately even when a company comes out and declares that they are a scam it will not detract hard core believers. The reason people will continue to believe in these things is the same reason people will always believe in horoscopes, crystals, and Indian dream catchers.

You can see the official notice that they had to write and publish in the image below.
