It’s a Wonderful life at King’s Academy

December 4th, 2010

It’s that time of year again, Christmas trees, family gatherings, holiday blockbusters and school Christmas plays. Ok so it’s kind of an awkward lead in, but over the last few days the King’s Academy Christian School (KACS) drama department has been holding its annual Christmas play. This year the students are presenting the classic “It’s a Wonderful Life!” The play is being held on Campus at King’s Academy (a facility the school shares with Trinity Baptist Church). The setting is a dinner theatre / coffee and dessert, and the performance takes place with in a circle of table and chairs, for a sort of theater and the round experience.

The King’s drama department has had a very successful run since the schools inception almost seven years ago. Despite KACS smallish size they have successfully produced at least one, often two major productions every year (a fall and a spring presentation, obviously). The school has also worked closely with Tyler Civic Theatre and Roger’s Children’s Theatre over the years. Many King’s students have played roles in the community theatre’s various productions.

This fall’s project has been a great success. The staff and students have worked hard to put together a terrific adaptation of a Christmas classic. It’s a play I was surprised to see performed in a live action format but the class does a great job. The last performance will be held Saturday, the forth, at two in the afternoon. For last minute info, contact King’s Academy at (903) 534-9992. The school is located at 604 West Forth Street in Tyler.

Mary Poppins Comes To Town At Kings Academy

May 7th, 2010

My school’s (King’s Academy Christian School) drama department has decided to put on a performance of Mary Poppins, one of my favorite Disney classics. When I heard that our drama director, DeAnna Hargrove (Tyler Civic Theatre Center’s Education Director), had selected the Mary Poppins screenplay for our spring performance, I immediately signed up. Even though we have a small drama group, we still had auditions. We were asked to sing and act out a scene as our desired character; all of us were given a role and we jumped right into rehearsals. Tackling this production hasn’t been easy and we’ve had our up and down days, but thankfully our cast is very committed. The downside to having such a small group is that when one person is missing it really shows, but the upside is that everyone is given a part. We’ve really tried to use our imaginations while creating a Mary Poppins set that will work with the space and budget that we have. One scene that has been especially hard to create is the scene where Jane and Michael Bank’s nursery comes to life. Drawers flying open magically, jack-in-the-boxes springing out of nowhere and singing mirrors aren’t very easy to find, but with some hard thinking Mrs. Hargrove has put together a lovely set. Acting comes naturally to our cast members, but singing and dancing have been a hard stretch. Thankfully, Mrs. Hargrove is very patient and helps us progress in all areas. Our lower campus students are also a huge part of our production; they help tie the scenes together by playing all of the extra roles like talking animals, living toys, and dancing chimney sweeps that make Mary Poppins so magical. The Roger’s Children’s Civic Theatre has been a huge help in making our production come to life by allowing us to borrow costumes and props. As each practice goes by, everything begins to run more and more smoothly. Though it seems impossible for such a small group with such little time and space to pull off a famous screenplay like Mary Poppins, our production has really come together.

Tyler Civic Theatre Center

January 12th, 2010

The Tyler Civic Theatre Center was originally founded in 1927 under the name “Tyler Little Theatre.” It has undergone name changes, expansions and re-locations. Over the years it has withstood the effects of depression, war, even fire. In 1951 the theatre opened the nation’s first theatre in- the- round, with a building designed for that purpose. A new building was completed in 2000 and named Braithwaite theatre. Its capacity is three hundred fifty seats. The original building was renamed Roger’s Children’s Theatre and helps to educate young actors on the process of putting a play together.

Education is really one of the main missions of the Theatre Center. They often foster relationships with local private schools and home schoolers who want to broaden their student’s experiences with the fine arts. The Center offers a number of summer acting camps, including a trip to the United Kingdom where the participants will have the opportunity to study and perform.

At home however the shows will go on. The Braithwaite theatre will be featuring the following plays from September through May: “A Month of Sundays,” “Squabbles,” “Scandal Point,” “The Chalk Garden” and “The Kingfisher.” The Roger’s will be showing: “Animal Farm,” “Kipling’s Just So Stories,” “Chipper, A Texas Cinderella” “The Magician’s Nephew.”

The Tyler Civic Theatre Center has been an important part of Tyler culture and education for many, many years now. Whether you’re interested in trying your hand as a participant or just looking for a night out, consider this old Tyler institution. Located at 400 Rose Park drive next to the Tyler Rose Garden.
