Furniture Stores in Tyler TX, a Consumer Review

June 7th, 2011

furniture stores in Tyler TXRecently my cousin and I went looking around for a recliner, but it wasn’t exactly a hard target search. We were merely browsing a couple of furniture stores looking for any deals. As a single guy, I don’t invest much money in furniture. Aside from some pretty nice book cases I haven’t purchased much at all actually. Fortunately, I’ve been blessed with quite a few relatively expensive pieces by both friends and family over the years. I bring this up in the interest of disclosing my own lack of knowledge of the furniture business. We visited two businesses: the much vaunted Southside Furniture, and Bassett.

Southside has been in the middle of a clearance sale. My understanding is that they’re in the process of going out of business. (I could be wrong on this point as I’ve heard a couple explanations for why they’re clearing their inventory, so if any readers know for sure, I’d welcome your comments). I do find it odd that they’d be closing as they only recently changed their name from Ashley’s back to Southside. At any rate, their selection was decent but even with the forty percent discount the prices seemed kind of high. I’m open to the possibility that it’s just my frugality, and the prices were in fact perfectly reasonable. I’m so accustomed to trying to do more with less that I don’t always perceive the great deal. They did have some really nice pieces but even some of the chairs that I personally found rather unattractive were up around four to five hundred dollars. The store itself was really nice by the way, very large and open.

I was less impressed with Bassett, but I’m completely sure why. First off I guess, because their selection of recliners (which happened to be what my cousin was in the market for), was quite a bit smaller. Their products overall were nice, but the store had a much more crowded feel. Both shops had some huge couches and chairs! I don’t know if this is the latest trend in couches or not but some of the bigger models had arm rests in the middle that included cup holders. Personally I’m not a fan of this feature. It brought back too many memories of riding in the back of my parent’s big Starcraft van. Just thinking about it brings on that old nauseous feeling.

At the end of the day neither shop had exactly what my cousin wanted, for what he was willing to pay. Both stops are worth a look see however. I saw a number of reviewers on line complaining about the customer service, but at least on this occasion that was not our experience. The staff at both places was perfectly friendly, offered to help, but let us look around without pestering us.

Swanns Furniture in Tyler Texas

August 10th, 2010

For over 100 years Swann’s furniture has been turning people’s houses into their dream home. Swann’s Furniture first opened in downtown Tyler and was family owned and run. At Swann’s it is very important for the customer to be matched with the perfect furniture and designs for their home. Saleswomen and men are all prepared to help you find what you are looking for.

While I was shopping at the store I really felt the pressure that the saleswomen were trying to meet their quota. I told the same lady about four times that I was fine and did not need any help but I almost felt like I was being stalked. I really just wanted to leave the store. That is not a great feeling when you just want to look at furniture for your house.

But besides the obnoxious sales team, I enjoyed my time at Swann’s Furniture. They really do have what you need to make you house beautiful. Something that stood out to me was that Swann’s not only had the large furniture items, such as beds, couches, and tables, but also had the small details that really make your house stand out such as their large selection of clocks and upholstery. It was quite humorous to hear the saleswoman talk about the upholstery and try to sell me the products by naming the brand names of the products. I had no idea who any of those people were, but they had such a big selection that you really can find the right colors to match your house.

My personal shopping experience may not of been the best, but it really is undeniable that Swann’s has some of the most beautiful furniture. Swann’s furniture has everything you need to transform your bedrooms, dining room, living rooms (including entertainment centers) and home offices.

Salvation Army Thrift Store in Tyler, TX

February 1st, 2010

Salvation Army Thrift Store

633 North Broadway Avenue
Tyler, TX
(903) 592-4361

The Salvation Army was started in 1865 as an Evangelical Christian ministry by William and Catherine Booth. It is called an army because of its structure being loosely modeled after military rank and structure. Today it has grown to have locations in one hundred and eighteen countries and operating in one hundred and seventy-five languages. People recognize their red and white logo world wide. The organization is most popularly known for its thrift stores and those sweet smiling people who annoy everyone by fundraising with the loud bell ringing at Christmas time outside of high traffic retail stores.

But these stores are only a fundraiser like the bell ringing. The stores help to pay for their main Christian ministry of free drug and alcohol residential rehabilitation centers and temporary homeless shelters. They are also able to offer temporary and longer term jobs to people in need of work.

The Salvation Army thrift store in Tyler, TX is located on North Broadway pretty close to the center of downtown Tyler. The store shares a parking lot with their rehabilitation ministry center and is very easy to notice. I must say that this is not my favorite thrift store in Tyler, but I still frequently visit it. It has a few features that make me a permanent shopper.

I’ll start with the good things about this store. This Salvation Army thrift store has the nicest and cheapest furniture out of the thrift stores in Tyler. Aside from buying new or from yard sales, your best bet for cheap furniture shopping in Tyler would be this Salvation Army. My wife was particularly pleased with the amount of really nice wooden coffee and end tables. There are also usually a few couches and stuffed chairs in really nice shape.

Right as you enter the store to the left between the door and the cash register, there is a nice little shelf of CDs, DVDs, and computer software. I was more than impressed when I began to look through this section. I was able to find a few useful computer games and a music CD that was brand new in the wrapper. All were only a dollar a piece. This does require some time to sift through the more noticeable collection of useless CDs and software.

In the back right of the store they have a pretty nice book section. This collection of books surprises me every time. It seems that they have most of the John Grisham books, which I am often in search of.

They also have a surprisingly large selection of fantasy and sci-fi novels, which can be hard to find in used book stores. I must let you know, though, that just like the CDs the books are in no particular order. It requires patience and practice at skimming through titles to find the gems.

One last cool little section is in the center section of the back wall. They have tons of bolts of fabric, and it’s decently priced. I am never looking for cloth for sewing projects, so I can’t vouch for the usefulness of it in that sense. I use it for when I am putting together a costume and just need to be able to drape large sections of cheap fabric.
As for the negative things, there aren’t many. Thrift stores are thrift stores, so you can’t expect too much out of them, but one problem with this store is the men’s clothing section is pretty drab and scarce. I am usually in search of t-shirts, but their selection is not great. I have however been able to find a tie or two in good shape.

The last thing is an isolated negative experience I had in the store on my last visit. I was shopping through the CDs in the front and noticed one of the cashiers staring at me suspiciously. Being a self-appraised above average good citizen and licensed preacher, I shrugged it off and continued on my shopping. I was able to forget about the slight awkwardness and made it to the check out. When I got to the register the lady some how informed me that she was in charge. I’m not sure if she was a supervisor or the owner. Anyway, she looked at me like only a mother can in the eyes and asked, “Where are the other CDs you had?” Shocked by the sudden accusation of theft, I paused. Then I told her truthfully that I had placed the ones I didn’t want back on the shelf. She gave me a weird grin and said something like a tsk tsk. All in all, it was awkward and almost offensive, but I still think the store is great. I just think that they are very used to working with drug addicts and delinquent teens.

Give this store a shot. You will most likely be pleased enough to return to shop in the future.

Big Lots On Beckham In Tyler TX

January 15th, 2010

Big Lots is an often looked over or even despised treasure. Looking at the outside of a standard Big Lots you might think you’ve stumbled upon just another depressing grocery store, but you would be wrong. However, the stores do often open up in buildings that used to be grocery stores. The stores are worth looking into. Since being founded in 1967, the Big Lots corporation has expanded to having about fourteen hundred stores in forty-seven states. The thing I never expected to discover is that the Big Lots corporation did over four billion dollars in sales last year! They are a serious force in the retail industry.

The location on Beckham in Tyler is an all time favorite of mine. Like most Big Lots stores the outside has nothing to offer the senses, unless you are particularly drawn to the color orange or large signs. The parking lot is rather depressing and doesn’t have the most attractive neighboring stores. In fact, the inside isn’t exactly appealing either, but it does have a lot to offer in terms of merchandise and surprisingly their sales and support staff.

I first went to this location because they were the only one of the two stores in Tyler that offered a full showroom of large furniture. They sell couches, loveseats, recliners, over-stuffed chairs, ottomans and even mattress sets. My past experiences with Big Lots had only been to find cheap but nice presents for people or attempts at lowering my grocery bill. The company has never been a disappointment to me, but they had never wowed me either…that is, until I went to this location.

My sister and brother-in-law had purchase a couch and matching chair-and-a-half a several months prior to my trip. Ever time my wife and I visited their house we were amazed at how nice their couches were and durable to boot. The furniture was nicer and more comfortable than almost any couch I had ever experienced, and I have sat on some very expensive couches. The crazy thing was that they had bought them at the Big Lots in Tyler, TX. We almost couldn’t believe it. Then they told us that they had only paid about seven hundred dollars total and had managed to pay for it using an in store financing plan with low or no interest.

We walked into this store hoping that we could find something comparable to the set my siblings had found. We were instantly impressed with how many pieces of assembled furniture were available for testing. We began sitting on couch after couch, truly enjoying the process. They all seemed so nice and the price tags were very comforting. Of course, they were higher than yard sale prices, but we were tired of ugly dog-destroyed sofas that were free or cost ten dollars. We were ready for grown up furniture, and the store had it. The experience became even better when we spotted the very couch and chair-and-a-half that we had already fallen in love with at my siblings’ house.

The sales associate was beyond nice and helpful. He told us his personal experiences with the couches we were considering and helped us decide on the set we bought. I asked how long it would take to get them in, and he said that they had them in the back. He offered financing if we needed it and mentioned that they could deliver them. Being the penny pincher that I am, I called some friends and borrowed a truck to pick them up by myself. I went back to the store within an hour and the associate greeted me with a smile, called two more guys and walked with me to the back of the store. The three employees joked and grunted as they lifted the couches into my borrowed truck and helped to tie them down.

I brought the couches home and have been constantly pleased. As I type this, I am sitting incredibly comfortably on a couch that was beyond affordable. I tell everyone I know to go to Big Lots when they tell me they are looking for furniture. Almost everyone responds the same. “No. Not Big Lots! How much did you say you paid?” Big Lots will surprise you if you are looking to save money but still have quality. Just think of better things while you walk in and wait to make your judgment once you’ve checked out their merchandise.

Times Have Changed, But Timeless Hasn’t… At Least Not Much

January 12th, 2010

In the nineteen nineties a group of friends and I established “Timeless Books and Music” as our second residence. We passed hours on the store’s floor and in its couches sifting through everything from classics to nineteen forties and fifties science fiction. The owner at the time became familiar with our tastes and would set aside books he knew would be of interest to us. As a result, my library contains some obscure but semi-valuable editions I would otherwise never have found. In those days the primary but not exclusive, literature to be found in the store was fiction from the first few decades of the turn of the century. There was a smattering of religion and history, and as I said classics, but the old dime back fiction was the order of the day. We’d find old Lewis and Lovecraft, Fritz Lieber and F. Scott Fitzgerald.

There was music for sale in those days as well. In fact if I were to walk through the music section today, I would probably find items we dropped off in trade for some form of reading material.

Today, Timeless has a new owner, but the same location on Broadway next to Hastings. And while the genre of books has changed, the store still keeps a steady flow of customers. The literature offered has broadened in terms of appeal. There are all kinds of mostly newer fiction. Timeless carries many of the same titles one might find in a bigger chain, but at used bookstore prices. The music section has grown considerably since I last visited too. If you’re looking for old vinyl or cassette tapes, Timeless is probably your best bet in Tyler.

Truth be told, things have changed a lot since I used to visit all those years ago. I no longer spend my entire afternoon haunting the shelves of the bookstore, nor do I tend to skip meals in order to buy books, (although that wouldn’t kill me either), but if you’re looking for some good beach reading this summer, you can still find it at Timeless Books and Music. Located at 4129 S Broadway in Tyler Texas.
