Genghis Grill

March 10th, 2011

Genghis grill is a new Mongolian stir fry restaurant which has recently opened a location here in Tyler at 3709 Troup Highway. This is a buffet style restaurant where you make your own bowl by choosing from a very large selection of vegetables, spices and protein such as chicken, beef or even tofu. Each customer is given a small metal bowl and a challenge to fit as many vegetables into it as physically possible.

The vegetable selection is wide and therefore it is important to carefully browse your options before getting carried away with your selections after only seeing some of the variety of ingredients. If you are more comfortable doing so there are small instructional cards to guide your bowl to a traditional style or feel free to be creative and do what looks best to you.

After piling your vegetables up high move on to choose your seasoning spices and sauteing sauce for your meal to be prepared in. Now you are ready to exchange this heaping mound of personalized stir fry for a number.

Take a seat and await for the traditional Mongolian style cooking method developed originally for use in battle on the warriors shields. After a fiery display of vegetable grilling and a few gong rings your food will be brought to you and you will be able to experience your creation.

One piece of advice some might appreciate would be to go easy on the sauce when preparing your selection, it is much stronger than one might expect. Genghis Grill also has a bar and even a selection of wine as do most restaurants in Tyler’s pseudo-dry community.

Genghis Grill is a new restaurant and the service is enthusiastic as you might expect from a fresh crew and place. It has a enjoyable atmosphere with no overbearing music or stressful crowds. The showmanship of the cooking provides a subtle entertainment for while you wait for your food.

Genghis Grill also provides the self proclaimed healthy options, in fact they are so confident in the benefit of their health options they’re currently hosting a subway style exclusive diet contest between three contestants who will eat nothing but this menu for three months, while following a hospital recommended exercise and nutrition plan to demonstrate exactly how life changing eating healthy and eating at Genghis Grill can be.

The prize will be ten thousand dollars awarded by the public’s choice of their favorite contestant, a somewhat confusing judgment process that doesn’t necessarily directly account for the relative health or improvement of the contest participants. But no matter how this riveting contest ends it is good to know that Genghis Grill is a responsible as well as delicious source for Mongolian stir fry in Tyler.

BJ’s restaurant coming soon!

January 31st, 2011

BJ's Restaurant in Tyler TX
I have gone to Houston quite a few times over the last couple years. Every time we have gone to Houston we eat at the BJ’s restaurant. I am excited to see that BJ’s is being built in Tyler. Tyler really does not need another restaurant, since there are basically only restaurants in Tyler, but I am very excited about BJ’s being built. The BJ’s restaurants in Houston are both restaurant and a brewery. Because of the fact that Tyler is a “dry county” this restaurant will not have a brewery and will just is a restaurant. I guess this fact will be a let down for some people, but the great variety and quality of food more than makes up for that fact. As you browse the large menu your mouth can not help but water from the great selection of food. The restaurant serves some of the best foods made with the perfect twist, no matter what your favorite food is (pasta, salad, sandwiches, steak, pizza, burgers, or giant stuffed potatoes) you will most likely find a dish at BJ’s restaurant that you will love. Just because they will not have the brewery does not mean that the restaurant will not be serving any alcohol. BJ’s restaurant will have their full wine, beer, cocktail, and specialty drinks.
BJ's in Tyler
The BJ’s restaurants also have ordering online! If you are like me, the only reason you really do not like to order take out, is because you have to sit in the restaurant for so long waiting for your food to be ready. By the time you food is done, you may as well ordered and ate at the restaurant; you would of got home around the same time. With the ordering online, you just go to the website and click on a location, browse the whole menu and put in your order. By the time you leave your home and get to the restaurant your food will be ready to take home. This is such a great and easy idea.

I can not wait for this restaurant to open. The construction is going up fast. I know that it will be a huge hit in Tyler, but even Tyler crowds will not keep from enjoying the great food at BJ’s.

The Epiphany Envisioning Service at Christ Episcopal Church in Tyler

January 30th, 2011

Christ Episcopal Church Tyler TXThe thirtieth of January, Sunday morning, Christ Episcopal Church officially launched its Epiphany Envisioning Service (EES). A couple of weeks back I wrote an article looking forward to the new service but having attended, I thought I’d offer a hindsight view of the event.

Envisioning is a contemporary service that features modern Christian worship music, (lead by musicians playing guitar, violin and bongo drums), a shorter somewhat simpler liturgy, (currently one borrowed from the Anglican Church of Kenya), and a greater focus on the homily or the teaching.

The first service was well attended by adults and youth alike, from within and without the church. I didn’t get any kind of head count, and I’m generally not very good at judging crowds but I’d guess that there was at least a hundred twenty people or so presented.

Personally, I’ve been a practicing Episcopalian for around ten years now. Prior to that, I grew up around a variety of evangelical and non-denominational churches.

I searched around for some years before deciding on a church to serve as my home for the remainder of my adult life. I chose the Episcopal Church for a lot of reasons, but a central one was the belief in the importance of taking the Eucharist (or communion), on a regular basis.

Over the past few years I have become used to our traditions, liturgies and order of service. But this morning I saw two familiar modes of worship combined in a way I had never seen before.

It was a blending of my past and present. In terms of the music and general flavor, I felt almost like I was witnessing a slightly more conservative Vineyard service, (at least a Tyler Vineyard service, which I’m told is less charismatic when compared to other Vineyard Congregations).

Also present however were the Anglo- Catholic traditions that are so important and meaningful to those who’ve grown up in more orthodox churches. For me, it was almost like I’d come full circle, only infinitely richer for having found a church where I can connect with Christ through the Eucharist. And this is really the strength of the Envisioning service. Its purpose is not to dispose of the ancient and familiar modes of worship, but to make them approachable to those who’ve never really experienced them; or for those who have, to let them re-connect in a new way. I look forward to seeing this ministry grow. I believe the EES will be a genuine blessing to our community. The Childrens Place

October 25th, 2010

Even with all the crowds, all of the annoying salesmen, and all the weird smells, the mall is worth going to when you have small children for only a couple stores, one being, The Children’s Place. I love to go to The Children’s Place just about anytime of the year.

They are always setting the newest trends in the children’s fashion world. For some reason it seems that when girls get to be around six or seven it is hard to find cute appropriate clothes. The thing I love about The Children’s Place is that their clothing for older girls is very cute, colorful, and modest.

Here you can actually find dresses and skirts for your daughter that is at least to her knees, that se will be happy to wear.

I wish that The Children’s Place did registrations. I would have registered there with each one of my pregnancies. The baby and toddler clothing selection is some of my favorite clothes that I can find anywhere. Most of the times that I go to The Children’s place I usually walk out with at least something for my daughters.

Not only does The Children’s Place have cute clothes for little girls, but they have a great selection for little boys. I love the little Polo shirts that are for toddler boys. They have all colors and sizes. Here you can find cute jeans for both boys and girls of all ages, for a great price.

The Children’s Place is definitely the best addition that has come to the Broadway Square mall. I really love this store. You can shop there for any season of holiday that is coming up. You can get your children outfits for Easter, Christmas, or even fun Halloween costumes.
