The Tour of Texas Day Three

March 9th, 2011

175th Anniversary Battle of the Alamo San AntonioFor a day that started with a thunderstorm, Day Three ended up pretty nice. The sun shone, the sky was a deep blue and a drive that looked to be a sloppy mess turned quite pleasant, (except for the strong winds). We arrived at Mission Concepción around one thirty in the afternoon. We generally make a point to visit one of the San Antonio missions each year. They were originally built in the early eighteenth century and are active churches. Mission Concepcion in San Antonio TXBoth the grounds and the chapels themselves are beautiful. One can feel the history in this place. If you’re not inspired to prayer and contemplation here you won’t be anywhere. Photographers are also inspired by the park. On more than one occasion I have observed brides taking wedding pictures at these missions. One would have to be beyond incompetent to take a really bad picture at any of them.

Besides all of this the San Antonio missions are always an easy stop. No entrance fees, no tours, no rigid arrival and departure times. It’s my favorite way to travel actually. Stroll the grounds, take in the sights and soak up the past. From here, it’s on to the Alamo!

Battle of the Alamo 175th AnniSan Antonio is a revolutionary town, no less so than Boston and Philadelphia. It doesn’t matter whether you’re Tejano, or Anglo, or anything in between. The only thing that matters here is that you’re Texan, even if it’s just for the day. It’s not unlike being Irish on St. Patty’s day. Of course the Alamo is ground zero for this revolutionary pride. A friend recently told me of a family member whose child began to complain of boredom while on a visit to the Alamo. The youngster was taken outside and summarily spanked. Like Bunker Hill or Lexington and Concord, the Alamo looms large in our collective consciousness. It goes a long way to defining who we are as Texans. We are the sons and daughters of the Alamo, literally and figuratively.

AlamoOn this the one hundred and seventy fifth anniversary of the battle, all of Texas was here. Re-enactors in period dress roamed the grounds, cannons went off and a brass band played tributes to the fallen. It was a great day, and while crowded, a sense of community was in the air. I couldn’t help but wonder what out of town visitors thought of the festivities.

Rather than hang out on the river walk this year the students elected to return to our San Marcos hotel a bit early. This was a happy choice and allowed them and the adults a bit of down time. Austin being on the agenda in the morning a bit of rest was certainly in order.

I think this small family-owned and operated business deserves an award for how many different services they offer. You were probably thinking that you misread the title of this post. It is no joke.

Pets and Friends in Tyler Texas

Pets and Friends Store

They are truly a pet funeral home and crematory that also sells pet food and supplies. They have a work out gym for women, and they are a fully functioning United States Post Office. And on top of it all, they are amazing.

Pets and Friends is a clear example of the beauty of East Texas culture. It is located just one mile outside of Loop 323 on 110 North right outside the Tyler city limits. With warm smiles and cheerful words you are essentially embraced the moment you walk into the door of this local business. You might even be greeted by one of their friendly and well behaved pets that stay behind the counter. It seems that even their other customers are all infected by the niceness. The workers really create the feeling of an old timey general store or even that of a family.

Their main service is one that I haven’t witnessed or experienced in anyway. That is, they do cremations of your pets. They are really focused on taking care of the people who face a real loss when their pet dies as though they lost a family member. They really care for individuals and their pets, and it is obvious from the first time you meet them. These cremations range from about fifty dollars to two hundred and seventy dollars depending mostly on the size of the animal and then on whether or not you’ll bring the pet home in an urn. They also offer a fairly large variety of more special wooden or porcelain chests and urns for additional cost.

The gym is a workout center for women. It appears to be a similar setup to Curves. It has several cardio machines as opposed to weights and strength building machines. There are usually a few women there, so it seems that it must be useful. They also have nice happy music playing always in there.

The business does have a decent sized retail area. It is all pet supplies. They have dog and cat food. I think I even saw sugar glider food. They have a huge section of collars and leashes of all sizes and colors. They can make customized name tags. All around the walls there are tons of t-shirts with animals on them, so you can wear a shirt to support your love for beagles or even your favorite breed of horse. They also have some of the most impressive looking dog and cat fur removers that run about seventy dollars a piece.

Pets and Friends Store Hours

As for price, it seems that the prices on some items can be a little higher than the big stores, but the service, atmosphere and convenience make up for it completely.

My single reason for frequently visiting this place is for their small version of a post office. This is definitely Tyler’s best kept secret! I almost don’t want to tell you, because I don’t want it to become overwhelmed with business. But if you’ve read this far, you deserve it. Pets and Friends is a full functioning postal service. They can ship letters and packages of all sizes to anywhere in the world. And the experience is absolutely nothing like a standard government run post office. There is never a line more than one or two people. I think I may have once waited for five minutes while they finished mailing someone’s package. The employees are beyond nice and helpful. I recently had to mail out over three hundred and fifty large envelope letters to countries all around the world. They worked it out for me so that I could drop them off in the morning and come back and pay later after they had weighed and stamped each one. They trusted me with what would be a bill of almost six hundred dollars. They sell packaging materials and all kinds of seasonal and forever stamps. This business really does amaze me. I have several close friends who will only use this small company to ship, and it’s because of the same reason. No one wants to wait in line at a traditional post office, and these people win our loyalty through their kindness and warm personalities.

If you want to make your life easier and a little happier, do your shipping at Pets and Friends. Or don’t, and just leave the convenience to my friends and me. I’ll keep going as long as I live in Smith County.

The Children’s Clothing Consignment Sale

January 27th, 2010

Twice yearly at Harvey Convention Center, Tyler

If you have kids and love a bargain – DO NOT MISS THIS SALE!

The CCC sale is a 3 day weekend event where around 1000 families bring their gently used children’s clothing, shoes, toys, furniture and equipment to be sold at about a third of the new price.

It is run by 2 stay-at-home Moms and a team of volunteers who work at the sale in return for the privilege of shopping early at the preview sale.

It is a very popular place to buy, and sell children’s items. Prepare for crowds on the first day and be aware that you may need to bring a family member to stand in line at the check out area.

Children's Clothing Consignment Sale in Tyler

Having said that, the CCC sale has been finely tuned over the last few years and they are becoming more and more efficient.

What I like about the sale – besides the fact that you can get nice things at exceedingly good value – is that it is easy to find what you are looking for. This is no garage sale. Everything has been carefully laundered, labeled and even hung on the hangers in a particular way on racks in size order, so that you can quickly root through and find what you want. As a seller, it can be a bit intimidating on the first occasion to make sure everything is done properly – but you will soon see that your time and effort is well worth it. Unlike most consignment stores – the split is 70/30 which means you can make a very good return on your items. The seller also sets the price and can decide whether or not the item is to go for half price on the last day of the sale or not. Sellers can pick up any unsold items or donate them to Living Alternatives or the Salvation Army.

As well as consigning some goods, I always spend a lot of money at the sale. Harvey Hall is literally packed with stuff for sale. I buy almost my daughter’s entire wardrobe each season and a good few baby clothes and shoes too. There are fewer clothes for boys – I guess they wear them out more than girls! but I have still found some great deals on nice brands and usually find playwear and swimwear too. In the fall I buy dress up outfits which are very affordable – and then I recycle them the following year! As a pregnant Mom I shopped for all sorts of baby items – they have strollers, backpacks, highchairs, cribs, bouncy chairs and every type of baby toy you can think of. I know that some people buy furniture and bedding at the sale too. There are so many bargains to be had! On the last day many of the items that are left are sold at half price. This is the best day to buy T shirts, play wear, books and videos/DVDs. There are also shoes left that are not so new looking, but fine for playing in.

I can’t begin to think of how much money I have been able to save by shopping at the CCC sale each year. I have to admit that I also love shopping there. I go with friends, leaving the children behind and we pile all our bargains into laundry baskets (as there are no carts to use and strollers are a bit impractical in the loaded space). Harvey Convention Center in Tyler We stop for a Starbucks or Dennys all day breakfast on the way home. It is truly fun!

Find out more about how you can become a seller on www.cccsale.com or just come and browse through the bargains. Admission is free. The next sale is April 8-10th
