John Tyler’s Football

December 2nd, 2010

John Tyler Highschool Football“Cujo!” has been on the lips of John Tyler High School Football fans. The Lions are stomping their way through the Class 4A Division I playoffs. John Tyler has fought its way to through the season with a 12-1 record. This is only the school’s 12th time to be in the state quarter finals. Head coach Dereck Rush has led the team in an amazing record of 24 wins in the past 27 games.

The John Tyler “army” is lead by senior quarterback David Bush, who is only yards away from becoming John Tyler’s all-time passing leader. He has led the team in rushing with 1274 yards rushing and 13 touchdowns. Bush along with JT safety Chris Hackett is committed to go to Texas Christian University next year. The duo makes for an unstoppable defense and offense. Chris Hackett leads in interceptions. Hackett intercepted two passes against Carrollton Newman Smith. This was the second game in a row for Hackett to intercept two passes.

Last year John Tyler made it to the quarterfinals but sadly lost to Klein 31-7. Last year John Tyler was playing in Class 5A division. The move to Class 4A Division has seemed to boost the football team’s record.

The pride for John Tyler’s football team has spread as fans watch this strong football team fight through the regular season and through the quarter finals with the state championship in their sight. Tyler has come together in support for the school, hoping for victory in each game.

Greatest Football Game Ever Played

Football, Football Everywhere

September 30th, 2010

Dallas CowboysNow that fall is in full swing, (thank God it’s finally cooling off), so is the public’s demand for more football. It is now possible to watch a live action football game nearly every night of the week. How? Well, the newly formed United Football league (UFL) is now being televised on the new sports network called Versus. The league is made up of five teams who will evidently play each other several times a season ending in November. As far as I can figure, the original plan was for the new league to be a sort of minor league from which the NFL can draw talent. The only problem is the UFL is currently composed of NFL has beens and almost weres like Dante Culpepper, Jeff Garcia, Denny Green and others. If this league wants to find a niche as a funnel for football talent they’re going to have to pick younger players and develop them into NFL ready candidates. Versus televises the UFL games on Thursday nights.

In the meantime the NFL Network is now carrying the occasional Canadian Football League (CFL) game, starting this season. The contract issues have finally been ironed out so that the CFL can make at least a once a week appearance starting back in July, and ending with the season closer in early November. Friday night’s game will feature Montreal vs. Calgary. Of course Saturday belongs to NCAA football and Sunday and Monday to the NFL. All this makes for two nights off (Tuesday and Wednesday) for the Football addict. It should be mentioned, all this stepping up of alternatives makes me wonder if the networks are hedging their bets against the possibility of a player’s walk out of the NFL next season.

I should also remind area readers that with the Texas Rangers heading into the playoffs having had arguably one of their greatest seasons ever, this is not the year or the month to tune out post- season baseball! So these are my two closing words of caution: Remember the boys of summer this fall, and be careful not to over- dose on football. There are too many good seasons yet to come, to waste one’s passion on cheap thrills.

Six Man Preason Football Begins in Tyler Texas

Six Man Football

Six Man Football

After writing my last first piece on the approach of fall and with it the football season, I actually spent part of my weekend taking in a six- man football scrimmage. Had I known ahead of time that I would be attending the event, I would have probably waited to write a single article. All things being equal however, I thought this would warrant mention.

First off let me say that for all my nostalgia and anticipation of autumn it’s not here, not yet anyway! The preseason scrimmage took place on the Grace Community School (GCS) football field and it was hot! With the sun reflecting off the bleachers it was also very bright, which only served to add to a certain amount of discomfort. I should add by the way that it is not my intention to cast dispersions on GCS for hosting the event, they have been extremely gracious in making their facilities available for the Six- Man games, but when it’s hot it’s hot, hospitality aside. The game was what’s referred to as a three way scrimmage. I’ve been around high school sports for a number of years now, and I’ve never actually watched a football game with three teams participating before. Basically the offences and defenses would rotate in and out of the game like players in a volleyball match. Each school had an opportunity to engage each of the others on both sides of the ball. It also gave the coaches a chance to get an idea of what the other teams are doing and how their prospective teams are progressing against potential rivals. The Schools who participated in the event were King’s Academy Christian School in Tyler and out of town rivals, Leverett’s Chapel, and Fruitvale. Because the game was unofficial and off the record no scores were kept, and stats were just for the coaches’ use, but all three teams had the opportunity to trade a few hits and prepare for the coming season by facing some outside competition. Despite the heat, the players did well, and spectators seemed to have a good time meeting with folks they’ve probably not seen over the summer months.

Double-Dave’s: Improving Tyler, 1 Pepperoni Roll at a Time

October 8th, 2009

East Texas often gets a bad rap for it’s light social scene. People say “there’s nothing to do in Tyler except go to restaurants and watch movies.” I used to complain in this way until I found a gem called “Double Dave’s Pizzaworks” in Times Square off South Broadway, a place where I could hang out day and night for months on end. Easily.

While I cannot speak for women, Double-Dave’s Pizzaworks certainly offers guys exactly what they want: Excellent pizza, cold beer, large TV’s and video games. Who could ask for more?

“But wait,” you might argue. “That’s not unique at all. One pizza joint can’t make Tyler cooler all by itself.” Technically, this is true. Even if I was to rave about Double-Dave’s outrageously good lunch pizza buffet, you might still object. But I would smile confidently. Because I know something you do not know: Pepperoni Rolls. Double-Dave’s secret weapons. Many places have great pizza. Only Double-Dave’s can offer spicy pepperonis blanketed with hot, smooth mozzarella cheese and wrapped in a piping hot roll. Okay, other places have them too. But not like this.

How good are they? Good enough to make Tyler a cooler, happier, and possibly more peaceful place to live. These babies will keep you up at night, not from heartburn but from heartache and regret. You could have eaten one more. You should have eaten one more. When can you go back? Is there a football game coming up which would give you an excuse to go back? No? A baseball game then? Soccer? A reality show? Perfect. Because even that kind of visual nonsense would be worth an order of Pepperoni Rolls.

If you can enjoy a football game at Double-Dave’s, you should plan on it. The big screens are more than sufficient, and the scoreboard makes the experience seem even more realistic somehow. Throw in a large Pepperoni-Sausage-and-Mushroom and a drink–they have a modest selection of Coke and Beer–and you’re set. If your kids get bored during the second half, slip them five bucks in quarters and they will disappear into the game room, leaving you alone with your buddies, the game, and your boy’s half-eaten pepperoni rolls all to yourself.

And after the game is over and you find yourself at home and half-hungry already, thank your lucky stars that Double-Dave’s will now deliver more of those perfect pepperoni rolls directly to your front door.

Isn’t Tyler awesome?
