Lago Del Pino

I am certainly no foodie. In fact any aspirations I’ve had for attaining that title have been dashed by my real foodie friends, who frequently become agitated with me for my love of microwave popcorn, ballpark hotdogs and the occasional box of fried chicken. It’s not that I don’t know what good food is supposed to taste like! I do. In fact I’m a fairly well traveled individual who’s tried quite a wide variety foods. I’m just not culinary elitist. At any rate, I recently joined some of my aforementioned foodie friends for an entirely new eating experience, and believe it or not, it’s one that can be found in the Tyler area. Now I know what my readers are probably thinking, but this is not simply the newest franchise from the big city moving into our area.

This is Tyler’s latest attempt at fine dinning, or at least as close as we can get.   Lago del Pino is invading territory previously held by the likes of Ricks on the Square, and Jake’s in Tyler. But while both restaurants are located right down town, Lago Del Pino sits lakeside at 14706 CR 1134 in between Tyler and Chandler.   The restaurant has the feel of a country club, with beautiful outdoor dining or large open spaces indoors for cool summer dining. In terms of ambiance, LDP is still “finding itself,” as one of my friends pointed out. (Not sure I’m comfortable taking credit for that line anyway). The outdoor section will be fantastic when the cooler months of autumn role around. Throw in a glass of wine, a fine tobacco product, and a little live music, and you’ve got the makings of a great evening out. The building is beautiful on the inside too, with a couple problems. First off the noise level is a bit high.

I expect the owners or operators will eventually identify some tasteful methods of quieting things down. My other critique has to do with the technical issues that should eventually work themselves out, things like a wobbly table, or food servers who seemed a bit out of their element at times. Honestly these things were minor issues for me but annoyed my friends who’s expectations were a bit higher than mine were. When our food arrived however, any preexisting irritation was forgotten.

The menu is not terribly complicated, nor overly expensive. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not economical exactly, but guests need not take out a loan for an evening out. The food was excellent, well cooked, familiar and imaginative at the same time… meaning, that even simple dishes had an extra zing. The steak was wonderfully tender and the salad fresh and delicious. (Wow, after those last few sentences I think I should ask for my foodie card back). Here’s the up-shot: despite the need for a bit of tweaking, Lago Del Pino will be a success on the strength of its chefs if nothing else. It’s a really neat restaurant, with something different to offer our area.

I love the Cracker Barrel. It is always a good choice for a nice meal – if you are looking for traditional home cooked style ‘comfort food’ that is! If it is salads or gourmet you want then … maybe not!

The special thing about the Cracker barrel is the ‘Southern’ feel. The atmosphere also takes you a little back in time. With entrees like meatloaf, roast beef and good old Texan fried chicken or friend steak and side dishes of corn and hashbrown casserole you’ll know what I mean.

When you arrive at the Cracker Barrel you might need to put your name on the seating list if it is a busy time of day. Avoid Sunday lunchtimes and any time on a weekend during First Monday Trade days in Canton if you hate waiting for a meal.

Once you have your party on the seating list, you have a while to shop in the ‘Country store’ There is something for everyone – old fashioned candy and fun toys for the kids, clothing, candles and seasonal home decor items. I love the card selection and the Christmas ornaments whilst the novelty items like the talking parrot and laughing dog appeal to my kids. If my husband is around, he usually sits outside on their wonderful rocking chairs – he hates shopping!

The restaurant is spacious and decorated with lots of southern ‘antiques’ which makes a fun backdrop for your meal. There is sometimes a fire burning in one corner but don’t be deceived, it is always cold in the Cracker Barrel.

When you are seated your server – who is usually a lady with big hair or an over-polite waiter – brings you drinks. They continuously circulate with refills so beware if you are there with friends. I once had 5 cups of coffee without realising it! The menu is straightforward but you can make substitutions or even make up your own meal from the side order part. The possibilities are endless!

I am always impressed that they cater well for children. They have kids menus with crayons and activities and also have solitaire on each table which is a distraction from hunger. I like the high chairs, boosters and the special cradle the have for car seats.
The service is good at the Cracker Barrel. They are always happy to bring more buttermilk biscuits – which by the way, are heavenly, and apple butter too. It is customary to leave a tip for the server at the table and then pay for the meal in the shop area along with any purchases you wish to make.

I particularly like breakfast at the Cracker Barrel. It is a real treat. Don’t be tempted to try any unfamiliar Southern food though – I thought I’d be adventurous and try grits and another time I ordered dumplins. Don’t eat them unless you’ve been raised on them I recommend! The bacon and eggs are great though, cooked fresh and to your order.

One final thing to note is that the CB is famous for pies and you can even order a whole one to take home. Actually they will also cater your Thanksgiving or Christmas feast too.

The Cracker Barrel is a family favorite and can always be depended on for quality food and good service. Lots of calories too but who cares about that once in a while?!

Chicken Express in Tyler

It’s been said that if you want to start new business, or expand to a new town, find what’s already working there and do the same thing, only better. One of Tylerite’s favorite comfort foods (myself included), is fried chicken. There is definitely a crowded market for this southern favorite in Tyler Texas. In fact if you include Brookshire’s grocery, there are just about as many chicken joints as there are churches in this town. And like our churches, we all have our favorites. Of late I have become a devotee of one or Tyler’s newest chicken establishments.

Chicken Express was founded as late as 1988 in Benbrook Texas, and now operates more than a hundred franchises in four states. Each Tyler restaurant is independently owned and operated, thus insuring the local owners a greater stake in their own success. While the restaurant is technically considered fast food, the quality and taste far exceeds its competitors.

When comparing the food to places like KFC, the prices are slightly higher, but the chicken is juicier and more flavorful. The batter is lighter and crispier. When compared to Church’s Chicken, (who’s food I really like), C.E. is every bit as good but the stores are larger and cleaner, with more places to sit and relax.

My only criticism of Chicken Express is that the menu is relatively small. Don’t misunderstand, they do a few things and do them very well, but as someone who often finds it necessary to eat in my car or otherwise on the go, some kind of sandwich would be much more conducive to a busy on the go lifestyle. Fried chicken is not an easy meal to grab and go. But maybe that’s the point.

In spite of the small menu, I love this restaurant. Who needs national chains when you have a good Texas, company, local Tyler ownership, and classic southern fare? Next time you stop off for fried chicken, say, on your way home from church, give this new local business a try. I think you’ll find you have a new favorite chicken place.
