Get Paid to Exercise, Yes Really!

February 27th, 2012

XTC Fitness launched a 12 week weight loss challenge that is probably about half way through by now and the winner gets a lot of cash.

Now for those who missed out on this opportunity and for those that are not members at XTC Fitness you can still get paid to workout.

Here is how this works. There is a gym mobile application called Gympact that pays you money for working out. Unfortunately it is only available for the iPhone at this time.

It may sound too good to be true but it is for real. What happens is that you setup an account with them and a part of that includes giving them your credit card information.

You set a number of days you plan on working out at your gym per week. Gympact asks you to check-in through their app when you go to your gym so they know you went.

This application basically helps to keep you accountable to your gym workout goals. If you fail to go to the gym the allotted number of days you set than you end up paying money instead of getting money.

If you workout everyday you promised Gympact will pay you for it.

So what you have is a pool of money from all those people that failed to workout. If you are good at sticking with your fitness goals you have one more reason to show up to the gym now.

If you have yet to find the best Tyler TX gym I would like to direct you to go by Tony Cruz XTC Fitness & Sports. This is a very large mega-gym in Tyler I visit 4 – 5 days a week.

XTC has over 80 group exercise classes a week and is sure to give you plenty of planned out reasons why you should come to the gym at almost any hour of the day.

Other fitness applications that reward you although not in cash like Gympact are: Earndit, Fitocracy, Switch2Health, and Nexercise.

Earndit is the closest to Gympact because you can win gift cards to retail stores. You can connect your RunKeeper or FitBit account to this app. To connect up you can simply login to the app using Twitter, Facebook, Google, OpenID, and others and start earning.

If you just like that motivation that comes from the praises of others than Fitocracy may be the app you need. This app is heavy on the gamified aspect of design. You get a combination of a game and social network that allows users to join groups and motivate one another in a contest of sorts where you earn many different coveted badges.

Switch2Health is like Earndit because it allows you to win gift cards. This app is also compatible with many different devices such as the iphone, Nike, Foursquare, and Android.

The last app I am aware of is called Nexercise. This app is an iphone fitness app with a lot of promises such as coupons but at this time only offers a gamified competitive fitness experience with other gym goers like the popular Foursquare check-in service. You can expect things like badges for reaching different fitness achievements.

What is the Least Amount of Work You Need to Do To Stay in Shape? Scientists Now Have the Answer!

February 16th, 2012

short interval workoutA recent study at McMaster University in Hamilton Ontario took a group of volunteers to study what the bare minimum you need to do to keep yourself in shape. The number of minutes may astonish you as it can be done in 20 minute intervals only twice a week to see very good health results for your heart and physique.

The study used sedentary healthy middle-aged men and women as well as middle-aged older patients who actually had heart disease. Some of the things tested were maximum heart rate, and peak power output on a stationary bicycle.

To start out no one exerted their peak performance on the stationary bicycles because they were all out of shape and the older people with heart disease were flat-out not in good health.

The study required the group to exercise in only short intervals and do no other longer form of exercise at all during the week. The exercise routine used is similar to how athletes train in short bursts of activity with short rest periods in between. These bursts of activity followed by short rests allow athletes to improve their speed and endurance but little was known about the benefits of using this type of routine in a short weekly minimum only program to improve ones health.

With the new routine of only two interval exercise sessions a week established within the group the study began. The intervals only last 20 minutes and this only twice a week but the health benefits from this program were downright surprising.

I have heard on several occasions from my health conscious dad that the American Heart Association and many other health organizations recommend a 30 minute workout of continuous moderate intensity exercise 5 times a week for establishing good health.

This study suggests that only two 20 minute interval exercise sessions could significantly benefit your health. Since most Americans do not exercise at all any bare minimum requirement on exercise that requires less time and energy can only be seen as a motivation factor for getting out there and doing at least this considering the huge health benefits such little work offers.

We are not saying to stop longer forms of working out but if you have serious time constraints to working out these bare minimum workout numbers may motivate you to at least get started with something as simple as two 20 minute sessions two times a week. This is not too much to ask now is it?

So to summarize what you need to do to begin the bare minimum workout routine is to first establish your 90 % maximum heart rate. Simply subtract your age from the number 220 and that is about the number you want to be at. You can get a heart monitor watch at almost any sports and fitness store or even Walmart. To begin you will need to complete 1 minute of strenuous effort at about 90 percent of your maximum heart rate and then follow that with 1 minute of easy recovery. Do this routine 10 times for a total of 20 minutes and you will receive the following benefits if you do this 2 times a week.

  • Significant improvement in the functioning of blood vessels and heart (Even for those with heart disease, the benefits outweigh the risks)
  • Prompts the creation of far more cellular proteins that are involved in the creation of energy production and oxygen.
  • Insulin sensitivity is improved as well as blood sugar regulation.
  • Lowers risk for Type 2 diabetes.
  • For those who have diabetes one workout session improves blood sugar regulation throughout the following day and especially after meals.

I workout at Tony Cruz XTC Fitness & Sports and do their 45 minute kickboxing class during my lunch break. This local Tyler gym offers over 80 group exercise classes a week and if you do not have a lot of time you could workout for 20 minutes and leave class early. Do this two times a week and you will make a significant impact on your health. You can view their class schedule here. How My Gym Workout Went in 2011

December 31st, 2011

Wow! I can actually go into a new year without wondering if I should make a new years resolution to workout again. I have been working out over at Tony Cruz XTC Fitness & Sports the last few months and I have seen some dramatic results.

For instance, when I started working out there I weighed 195 pounds but as of today I weigh 172 pounds all from doing the kick boxing group exercise class they have there. I learned a few fundamental basic fighting skills through repetitive action on the kicking bag. I have increased my cardiovascular system through running the undulated indoor track during the 45 minute kick boxing class. I have also managed to tone up quite a bit and put on some muscle pounds.

I am a male and so I managed to lose a lot of weight because most of it was a lot of pure extra body fat on top of muscle. For women you will not always see a quick reduction in weight in the beginning as you are building a lot of muscle while at the same time shedding pounds. This class is just as much for women as it is for men and often times there are more women in my class than men.

What is so cool about XTC is that you get to see a full spectrum of fitness levels working out with you. Everyone pitches in to encourage and lift up those around them. You only workout as much as your body can handle but over time you will find that you are able to push a bit more each time and will eventually be able to accomplish everything the instructor asks the group to do.

I personally must still cheat on some exercises as I really push myself about as far as I can on each exercise and so many times I have to simply quit before the instructor tells us to stop.

If you are like many of us who will be making a new years resolution regarding fitness and weight loss in Tyler Texas I highly recommend trying out Tony Cruz XTC Fitness & Sports. They have over 80 group exercise classes a week which are sure to keep you on track with your goals. The best thing about these classes is that they are free with your gym membership.

Workout number 7 at XTC Fitness in Tyler TX

June 29th, 2011

I am now officially at workout number 7 after completing it today around 1:00 p.m.

During my lunch hour I run over to Tony Cruz XTC Fitness and Sports gym and get in a 45 minute kickboxing workout.

Since almost all of this workout is cardio with the occasional push ups you feel the pain. Regardless if you think your tough stuff if you don’t do normal cardio stuff on a regular basis this workout out will remind you of that.

Back on my 6th workout day I started to actually feel stronger. I could do quite a few more fist push ups and I didn’t feel so much like I was about to die.

I know that will power is the number one most powerful asset we as humans have and that my emotions would be telling me to quit at workout number 1.

As you can see I did kickboxing class number 7 and I am still alive and well and feeling much healthier, happier, and more alert than ever.

The kickboxing trainer I had to today was Andrew and on other days it is Corey. Both group exercise trainers are extremely helpful and encouraging throughout the 45 minutes.

If you want to get yourself into shape quick and don’t feel like you have the time then make some time during your lunch break. Go by Tony Cruz XTC Fitness & Sports and meet a personal trainer or two and see what group exercise class and time would work best for you.

Benefits of a Tyler TX Gym Workout

June 14th, 2011

Tony Cruz CTC FitnessStudies have shown that about 1/3rd of cancer related deaths occurred because of a bad diet and a Homer Simpson type of sit on the coach watch TV lifestyle. By simply moving your body with some basic although brisk exercise you decrease your chances of getting:

Certain cancers:

  • breast
  • colon
  • endometrial
  • prostate

The short jog, cardio routine, or local Tyler Texas gym workout during your work lunch break is linked to a 50 percent lower risk of being told one day you have colon cancer.  The Journal of the American Medical Association discovered that a woman’s chance of getting breast cancer can be reduced by 18% simply by getting in 1 – 2 hours of a brisk walk in each week as compared next to women with sedentary lifestyles.

Another benefit of a workout routine like what is offered in the kickboxing classes at XTC Fitness and Sports is a dramatic reduction in cardiovascular disease chances. Cardio disease is the most common cause of dieing in the United States right now. Exercise almost guarantees you will not die of overweight cardio related issues because of never getting into a routine of daily movement.

Everyone dies eventually but heart attacks can take 30 – 40 years off your life if you are obese.

At this point your rational mind is likely convinced of some of the benefits of working out but your emotional side might still be thinking of how that ice-cream or Oreo will feel going in your mouth.

What you need is a trick to change up things just enough to cause your emotional brain to get on board with your rational mind.

None of us likes to think we need  other people and programs to get us doing something but in reality we are like robots and we easily find ourselves in bad habits causing us to do the exact same things day after day.

You can quickly trick your body into doing some good by using one of the most valuable weapons in your arsenal, your will power.

Our will power is often squandered and put aside as we allow the path of least resistance to often times make our decision up for us.

By changing your environment and getting into a gym setting with class mates who have the same goals as you do you assist in getting your emotional side on board with your rational mind.

Having the encouragement of class mates and a kickboxing instructor with you for the entire workout routine helps you do what your emotions don’t want to do.

Go ahead and admit it, you may have the will power but you don’t want to use it to workout.

You can cheat these emotional thoughts that rob you of a healthy lifestyle by changing your environment and thereby changing your emotional mind.

Before you know it 30 days will have past and you will have a new routine in place of your trip to the food store, couch and TV.
