Academy Sporting Goods in Tyler

August 21st, 2012

If you go to Academy in Tyler, you likely won’t see Danica Patrick or Emmitt Smith shopping for some sporting goods but that’s no reason not to go. The sporting goods store has a wide range of equipment whether you’re just a fan or an experienced athlete.

If you’re just getting your kids started in T-ball, Academy is the perfect stop for the necessities to get the little ones underway.

You can find everything from baseball, basketball, football, golf, fishing hunting and quite frankly, the list goes on. You’ll even find equipment for boxing, martial arts, paintball croquet, yard darts as well as other yard games, and others, just to name a few more. Basically, if it’s a sport, it can be found at Academy. In fact, there is equipment for competitions that aren’t sports.

Over the last couple years, Academy has been my go-to-place for tennis shoes, sun glasses and apparel for my favorite sports teams. However, if you’re not a fan of Texas teams, you may or may not be out of luck at the Academy on South Broadway in Tyler. The truth is though, that’s all you need.

If you’re in need for new sports and outdoor equipment and you live in Tyler, do yourself a favor and make Academy your first stop. You likely won’t need to make a second stop.

Resolution of the Suddenlink, Viacom Dispute

January 2nd, 2011

Well the New Year’s weekend came and went, and my son is even now lying in my bed watching his favorite Upside Down Show episodes on Nick Jr. as he drifts off to sleep (hopefully). As a quick side note to Viacom’s confidence, there was a show you should have continued to make. With all the sounds effects and high energy, it actually seems to appeal more to little boys rather than little girls. It’s less about the little ones finding ways to express their emotions and more about playing, making noise and generally having fun. It’s kind of a nice change of programming for the dad of a child who’s all boy!

Putting the review aside for now however, when Saturday morning rolled around and I still had all my cable channels, I assumed that some kind of agreement had been reached between Suddenlink and Viacom, or shortly would be. I wouldn’t have to wait long for confirmation of my suspicions. The cable company sent out an e-mail to subscribers on Saturday afternoon explaining that they had “reached an agreement in principle on a long-term contract.” Obviously the details of the terms were not listed in the e-mail, but they did announce that Viacom’s new on demand, on line movie service would be available to Suddenlink customers, as well as the existing networks customers have come to expect. To their credit, Suddenlink cable also promised that there would not be changes to the promised rate adjustments. Instead the cable provider will simply eat the added cost for their standard services. The recent communication did not stipulate how long the company would be willing to take that hit but I would presume that at some point they will have to raise their rates. For the time being at least, it sounds like they will remain the same. Furthermore, Suddenlink customers will have the option of whether or not to opt out of Viacom’s new movies on demand service.

At the end of day I am glad the companies were able to hash out an agreement, even though I think Viacom’s methods don’t serve the public’s interest. I realize they’re not running a non- profit organization, but I find that the company’s lack of concern for customer satisfaction speaks rather loudly. All that aside, at least we will still have access to Nick Jr. and syndicated episodes of Everybody Loves Raymond.

Cinderbella’s Boutique

Tyler Texas Children's Clothing at Cinderbella's

Cinderbella's

Tyler Texas 75701

hours: Mon-Sat 10 am – 5:30

This shop opened last year and is a delight to many a parent who loves to dress their little one in nice cute things but doesn’t always have the funds to buy them new.

This well laid out and spacious shop has an area in the back for good quality, gently used consigned goods and the rest of the store contains new items. Although this consignment store is fairly large already they will be moving into a much large facility close to where Lifeway Christian Bookstore used to be in the same shopping strip. This will give them much more room to offer many more children’s clothes they would like to have available for sale.

Many of the new items are hand made or have motifs which can be made to order. There are bows here too – just in case you are the sort of Mom who likes to have matching accessories for their child.

The thing that struck me immediately as I walked in the door was that this is a boutique for little girls. Sure there are items for boys too but this is the place for very girly girls!

It is a perfect place for grandmothers to buy cutsie outfits for their beloved little ones and a great place to buy that non essential but oh-so-lovely outfit or accessory for a friend who is expecting their first little girl. As I browsed, I could almost hear the exclamations of friends at a baby shower as gifts were unwrapped!

The thing that caught my eye, as a more practical person, was the shoes. Here you can buy new shoes which are excellent quality and really individual. The leather was so soft, I’m sure they would be perfect for little feet. There was a half price sale when I was shopping too so it didn’t seemed too expensive.

In the rear of the store are the consigned goods. These are definitely upscale too.

They are nicely arranged in size and gender so you can look through them without hassle.

The impression I got from this store was attention to detail. Not just in the type of clothes for sale but in the way everything was presented. The lady at the checkout was really helpful and I’m sure she loves what she does, which makes the whole shopping experience at Cinderbella’s a really nice one.
