Find or Refer a Contractor in Tyler

Affordable but quality craftmanship in home remodeling repairs in the Tyler TX area

January 26th, 2011

Over the last 2 years I have had several different home remodeling companies over to our Tyler TX home. During this time of being a general contractor of sorts for my own home I have seen a lot of problems that happen by not questioning contractors and getting enough bids from different companies.

I hope that this article can help you in making an informed decision when hiring a home remodeling company to fix up your Tyler Texas home.

The number one headache I have at this point is the issue I have been dealing with of a bad paint job in my sons room.

I failed to ask the painters I hired if they would be using quality paint rather than closet paint.

You see there are different qualities of paint and the lower the quality the cheaper the cost.

Although you may pay a painting company a certain price and may have even haggled them down quite a bit they can make up for it in what quality of paint they purchase.

I have even been told that cheap closet paint was used in many of the mansions built at the Cascades. I have no idea if this is true but so what, what could be the worst case scenario?

I personally have experienced what problems creep up with low quality paint. The problem I have had is that within only a few short weeks whenever my son has scraped a hotwheel car against the wall or even a book the paint would peel off.

Keep in mind the paint has had plenty of time to dry but nonetheless the paint peels off if there is even the slightest harsh brush against it.

This paint peeling problem is number one issue that occurs when a low quality paint job is done on an interior home paint job.

Be sure to ask the painters you hire exactly what type of paint they plan on purchasing for the job and why. Also ask them if the paint is considered a low quality paint or high quality.

Don’t let a painter convince you that low quality is just as good and if youwant go ahead and call Sherman Williams paint store and talk the choice of paint over with a sales man.

A Sherman Williams paint sales guy will usually no more than many grunt level painters who haven’t even picked up a single book on the subject of professional painting.

Unfortunately in many cases a general contractor must know more about each aspect of the construction of a house than the individual niche experts putting the house together.

For each new project you plan for your Tyler TX home go ahead and watch a few short youtube instructional videos and you will find you will have plenty of good interview questions to ask your local Tyler Texas home contractor.

Still Think There Are No Old Bookstores in Tyler?

January 8th, 2010

Try Fireside Books

As someone who loves books I’m somewhat ashamed to admit that I never realized just how many bookstores we have in Tyler. One of the better ones is found at 110 East Houston, and has been at that location for nearly ten years. Fireside Books is not for the casual reader who knows exactly what he or she wants.

This is not a chain, where the reader can walk to a carefully arranged aisle and select the latest novel by the trendiest, hottest new writer. This is a bookstore for the reader for whom the six dollar paperback is not sufficient and time is not an issue. With its dusty shelves, and stacks of books scattered literally all over the store, it almost seems not to belong in Tyler at all. And the lack of conventional organization only adds to the charm.

Many of the books found here are of the old and rare variety. The store stocks a great many first editions and signed copies. Local authors and bestsellers are on hand. There are large paperbacks and leather bond biographies. Fireside does not stock an inordinate number of common paperbacks. Not to say they have none; just that they do not make up a very large portion of the store’s inventory, which is rare in the used book biz.

The history section is probably the crowning jewel of the place. There are both familiar and unfamiliar volumes, on a wide range of historical topics. The Texas history section in particular is excellent and features biographies of many famous Texans. All the editions they sell are clean copies; which brings me to another plus. Fireside doesn’t waste the customer’s time pushing damaged or otherwise low quality literature as a means of rounding out their inventory. Every shelf seems to have something worth reading, (unless of course you’ve no interest whatever in the subject matter).

A warning though, for the impatient shopper, on the hunt for a particular title this bookseller may be a bit frustrating. The local chain is probably a better choice for that person. Fireside is for the reader who sees the journey as its own reward. If you enjoy pulling up a spot on the floor and perusing a stack of yet to be stocked books, this is probably for you. But be careful you may end up losing track of time or going over your spending limit.

Roofing Tyler Texas

January 8th, 2010

When searching for a Tyler Texas roofing company your main concern like mine might be which company offers the most quality construction service. Some roofing companies are just one guy that just popped off a roofing job and picked up a basic knowledge of what to do but do not have things like their own dumpster and roller for picking up debree left over. A new fly by night roofing company also may be buying low quality shingles they are getting a deal on without any consideration about a quality roofing job for your Tyler home. These are legitimate concerns I had when shopping for an affordable Tyler roofing company that also did a good job with installing the latest technology in roofing shingles. The last thing I want for my new roof is old outdated shingles that would cause the cost of my energy bill to stay the same or potentially go up in cost.

Call Advantage Roofing for a Quote – 1-903-939-3168

Advantage Roofing ended up being the roofing company in Tyler that had the cheapest quote for my roof and they used 30 pound felt, had different shingle technology to choose and a roofing consultant to take you through the whole shopping process to find the right shingle for my house. It was important that I had someone to help educate me further in the roofing process as there was a limit to what I could learn on the internet. Advantage Roofing answered my questions from what I learned on my own by doing my research to pass my interview process. The have rubber water guards for the valleys in your roof and they assist in replacing all decking or just your damaged decking on your roof at a competitive price. When you receive a quote for your Tyler Texas roofing company job you will get a turn key quote that includes all fees and charges. There are no hidden fees or charges when receiving a Tyler roofing quote from Advantage Roofing. This East Texas roofing company gives you everything in clear easy to understand language in a professional quote sheet. Their letter head contains their company logo and information for passing on to a bank if you are getting a bank loan for the roofing job.

Another one of my concerns was that some roofing companies assume that an insurance company will be taking care of paying for the roof so the roofing company charges way more than what the roofing job is worth. Advantage Roofing was not among the Tyler Texas roofing companies that over quoted me on my roof. Without even knowing about my situation I received the most competitive bid from Advantage Roofing. I have nothing but posisitive experiences with this roofing company and recommend them to my friends family and business associates. You can be confident when receiving a bid from Advantage that you will receive a fair price for your roof job, the latest shingle technology will be used, and careful craftmenship will be used with the promise of 4 – 6 nails on each shingle and no staples.

Call Advantage Roofing for a Quote – 1-903-939-3168

When picking shingles for your roof you will save on the cost of yoru energy bill by picking a lighter color shingle. The downside to going with a lighter shingle color is that darker shingles are what happens to be in style right now among newly built houses. I went with a darker shingle as we liked the look it would give our house as a whole. Before getting a roofer like Advantage Roofing to work on your Tyler Texas house you will want to be sure and let them know if you have had things like old water heaters removed and replaced with outside water on demand heaters because you will have an empty pipe that will need to be removed. If you have any empty pipes coming through your roof just let them know and they will take them up, deck over and apply shingles. As a matter of practice Advantage Roofing will also replace led pipes, vents, and wind turbines with the same color fixtures as your roof. This replacement of your old roofing materials will give your roof a color matched appearance that will complete your quality roofing job in Tyler.

If you would like to contact Advantage Roofing to receive a quote for your Tyler or East Texas roofing job then feel free to call Jay at 1-903-939-3168. He will set up a time to meet you at your house and assess what needs to be done. Advantage Roofing will also check hail damage that may have occurred on your Tyler home. If Jay can find that hail damage was what caused your roof damage he will meet your home insurance company on site to complete the investigation and make sure you are approved for a complete roof replacement which you are entitled to if your roof was damaged beyond reasonable repair. Most often a large amount of hail will completely destroy a roof and over time will cause enough leaks to cause costly damage even more than if you were to avoid roofing repair. Tyler home insurance companies want to replace a truly hail damaged roof as they will save money in the long run by stopping further damage to your home via water damage. Give Jay a call and let him check for hail damage or if you just have an old roof that needs replaced give him a call as well and he will see what roofing options will work best for you.

On Target in Tyler

November 11th, 2009

As a traditional male, I hate shopping. While they do have the advantage of offering a huge variety, department stores can be a source of frustration. Service is often bad, the stores become disorganized quickly, and I often find it necessary to sift through a lot of low quality merchandise before finding what I want. Of all the major department store chains however, I do have my favorite.

Target is not only a great department store, but as huge corporations go, it’s a good Tyler neighbor. Between the distribution center, located just south of Lindale, and the area stores, the company employs thousands of East Texans. It is also very involved in community affairs and local charities. The store itself is always neat and clean which for me can make or break the department store experience. I find there is almost nothing worse than wandering the aisles of a dirty disorganized store looking for the one thing I came to buy. Target usually does a great job keeping the store attractive and easy to navigate.

Another of the store’s strengths is its staff. The employees of Target’s biggest competitor in Tyler are often disheveled and unhelpful. Those of Target are always attractive, neat and knowledgeable.

I will concede that the store’s prices can be slightly higher, but I remind the reader that you tend to get what you pay for. And with the Christmas season just around the corner, I trust there will be a lot of sales to bring in even the thriftiest customers. The quality of products like clothing is definitely higher than the competition’s, and I should mention the selection is better, particularly for business casual attire.

So if you’re looking for a better shopping experience and better quality goods overall, I suggest giving Target a try. While it’s admittedly not a local business a good portion of the dollars spent there do stay home in Tyler Texas. Target is located at 7003 on South Broadway, next to Wal-Mart. For more on Tyler area department stores, see the Tyler blog section of this site and look for the title “Wal-Marts in Tyler.”
