Newk’s Express Cafe in Tyler TX

March 13th, 2011

Newk's

Newk’s is a little cafe in Tyler TX in a very big facility. It sits right behind Carino’s Italian Grill and while Carino’s may take 45 minutes to get your food out Newk’s will usually only take 5 – 10 minutes.

While Newk’s is fast in getting your food to you they are also cooking up some pretty tasty stuff. Newk’s does not hide the fact that they rely in large part on a microwave (they do not actually use microwaves) or toaster oven to heat your food as the name “Newk’s” seems to say it all.

Newk’s is very convenient, fast, and delicious and during lunch time and after church is hugely popular. Newk’s Express Cafe has an oddly similar name to Cafe Express. The two different chains have similar salad choices and gourmet salad garnishment counters.

Newk’s was started by a former head guy of McAllister’s Deli and seems to be strategically placing their chain in every popular city McAllisters has had success in.

If I had to pick between Newk’s, Cafe Express, and McAllisters I would go with Cafe Express as my first choice as their salads are quite a bit more enjoyable. My second choice would be Newk’s because I like their sandwiches better than what McAllister’s has to offer. My 3rd choice would be McAllister’s Deli, unless I need free wifi internet, because their salads are gross, their sandwiches are ok, and when you order chili they put about two strands of cheese and 3 paper thin onions on top? Chili ain’t no good if it don’t have no cheese and onions on it!

Update (Friday 4-29-2011 we received this email from John Albriton)

“I wanted to contact you regarding the article you wrote about Newk’s Express Cafe in Tyler, TX. The name Newk’s is not to suggest that we use microwave’s to cook our food, it is short for the founders last name Newcomb. In fact, we do not have a single microwave in the building. I would appreciate it if this could be corrected as it is misleading and certainly doesn’t project a good impression when you think of fresh food fast. Thanks Sincerely John Albriton”

I and many others first thought when seeing the restaurant constructed that it was some type of microwave reference. I am afraid your brand name will always have this unintended confusing meaning. You should go give your brand guy a kick in the pants. Anyway I like your restaurant. Sorry not every article on the internet about your company is 100 % positive but wouldn’t that look a little misleading if everything people wrote looked like a sales pitch?

Finally, I haven’t tried their chili over at Newk’s yet but I did see a couple eating it and they both had their own order. The chili had tons of cheese all over it and I assume they held the onions. Now if only Newk’s could copy McAllister’s chili bread bowl and I think they would be a successful traitor.

Four Square

February 9th, 2011

Four Square has become one of the most popular games. Four Square is played over the internet on smart phones, such as iPhones and Droids. Basically you “check in” when you go to business, house, or anywhere. The more you go out, the more you “check in” to restaurants and businesses you are awarded with titles (such as mayor). A ton of people have it set to their phone to post where they are on their Facebook wall, or on Twitter. To be constantly posting where you are every step seems a like you are just looking for someone to start stocking you. Posting where you are at does give different restaurants and businesses great free advertisement. I have seen someone check in to restaurants at lunch time and think “wow, that sounds good” and have gone just based on that. Some restaurants even give the four square mayor free food if you show you are mayor. Chili’s gives free chips and salsa. This game has become a huge hit! Everyone wants everyone to know what they are doing from a minute to minute basis. Although I have not got into the Four Square game, but from a business point of view it is a great way to let everyone know that you exist. Many people fight for the most “mayorships” in the game. You compete against complete strangers and can see who all has checked in. you need to have a Four Square account to play, which is free. So get ready to be stocked through your favorite social network, and start playing Four Square with the thousand other East Texans.

Keep an eye out for this new lunch time hot spot that will be competing against the likes of Quiznos, Subway, Jersey Mikes, and I think that’s just about it.

Oh ya, Brookshires, Wal-Mart, and Albertsons sale pre-made disgusting sub sandwiches. Why buy pre-made when you can get fresh to order sub sandwiches at Jimmy Johns in Tyler Texas.

Los Gueros Taqueria in Tyler My New Favorite

June 14th, 2010

image1366044308.jpgI have been eating lunch lately at Los Gueros Taqueria in Tyler.

I must say it is much better than the greesy stuff El Lugar has started selling at their new locations.

Los Gueros is over by the original Bruno’s Pizza location.

This place is packed at lunch time.

Not much of a secret anymore!

P To The King

Prepare yourself for an adventure into a foreign land, exotic smells, tastes and people await you in this Asian utopia of flavor. As you enter it is important not to let the dingy walls and ceilings discourage you. For the dinge is but a badge of honor, received through the service of the many customers who left that wonderful place with hearts content and stomachs full of what was probably chicken. No need to worry about difficulty ordering, it won’t be hindered by the language barrier, if anything it’s more like a language ferry, a ferry of charming grammatical mistakes and adorable accents ready to float you across the river of semantics and into the world of sesame chicken and fried rice.

In a hurry? Then feel free to try their world class drive through, but be prepared to wait in line at lunch time, Peking is pretty popular with the hospital lunch crowd. Yes, Tyler should be very proud to have this one of a kind restaurant, adorned with tapestries and golden cats it has a level of sophistication that’s absent from most other Tyler Texas restaurants and should you happen to feel unsafe swallowing such big pieces of food with those little sticks than look no further than the back door, where the thoughtful owners have given you instructions for rescuing your asphyxiating, chop stick impaired friends. So if Asian cuisine is what you want look no further than Peking restaurant. It’s way better than stupid Shoguns.
