Getting Pulled Over in Tyler Texas– Again!

April 15th, 2011

Motorcycle patrol officers in Tyler have a dubious reputation when it comes to how zealously they uphold the law. In all honesty I have not exactly helped to smooth things over in the past. As a general rule anytime I get stopped, it’s by a motorcycle officer, and I always get the ticket. But to be fair I recently met with an officer who broke with the stereotype.

I’ve been driving on expired tags (and inspection stickers) since… well last summer. I know I need to update them, but there are so any other places I can put seventy- five dollars besides giving it to the government. At any rate I’ve been very conscientious of my driving and my routes over the last ten months, knowing I would probably take it on the chin should I encounter a blue and white Harley; until recently. A long night with a sick child made it necessary for me to alter my routine the following morning. Rather than taking my normal route to work, I was forced to take one I knew to be fraught with danger. The area through which I was passing was ideal ground for speed traps and school zone violations, but I proceeded watchfully. Not watchfully enough as it turns out, because as I came around a bend, there he was, and he couldn’t miss my stickers. As his lights burst on, I pulled into a nearby parking lot. The officer approached my vehicle and asked (surprisingly amiably) to see my license and registration, which I produced. As I was looking for my insurance card he informed me that my license had expired! I was aghast. This was in fact a genuine surprise to me.

So let’s review, of the, really four items I was expected to produce for the officer, I really only had one, my proof of insurance. I suspect by the way that this is really the main item with which he was concerned. At this point in the meeting I was about ready to shrink and hide under my seat. My little boy sat in the back seat endlessly fascinated by the proceedings. Not only did he get to converse with a police officer, but a police officer on a motorcycle! Funny how our reactions can run in diametrically opposed directions. But maybe it was my son’s interest that moved the officer’s heart to mercy. Rather than giving me a huge ticket (or tickets), for a laundry list of my infractions, me gave me the usual span of time to pay my fees and correct my violations. Obviously I won’t use his name and risk ruining his fearsome reputation, but thanks for not being a stickler and for making getting around this town a bit less of a headache!                True, Tylerites are often annoyed by the rigid demeanor of some of its finest. But it’s good to know that at least some of them don’t take themselves too seriously!

Snow Sledding Hills in Tyler Texas

February 4th, 2011

If you are like me and most of my family you are always on the look out for a steep snow sledding hill just in case it happens to snow in Tyler Texas.

Snow is very rare in Tyler Texas and snow that resembles what you see at Breckenridge and Keystone Colorado ski resorts is almost unheard of.

When we do get snow it falls and melts immediately but last night and today we have a thick soft blanket of about 4 – 5 inches of snow.

I have had my eye on this one great hill over at the Walmart Highway 64 parking lot.

If you drive in and look over to your right toward the back there is a very large steep hill.

We climbed up and used a $10 plastic container ironically bought at Walmart last year.

Although our container was not ideal it still worked and was a lot of fun. If you actually had a real sled you could have quite a blast going down this mini ski/snowboard trail.

So for those in Tyler Texas that like to have a little fun in the snow and cold check this hill out sometime while Walmart is still ok with you being on it.

“Best ribs in town”

January 7th, 2011

bourbon west bar and grill tyler texasI was invited to a restaurant recently that claims to have the best ribs in town, I couldn’t find a website for them only a bunch of restaurant reviews.

After reading several positive reviews on St. Louis rib factory I was getting in the barbecue mood so I printed out a Google map and headed out for lunch, located next to the Brookshires dairy downtown made it easy enough to find, although I had found out that they had recently changed their name to Bourbon West Bar and Grill.

I could smell the barbecue seeping from the kitchen so whether or not it would live up to the name of best barbecue in town was irrelevant for the moment.

The parking lot was empty so I made sure to check the sign before going in to make sure they were open. I was well within the allotted time so I entered. On first look it’s a very decent looking restaurant, I would go as far to say that its a little too up scale for a rib joint.

I saw roughly thirty tables all of which were empty, undeterred by the empty appearance and egged on by the delicious smells emitting from the kitchen it took a little over two minutes of not seeing anyone before I started looking around.

They have a decent enough bar and a large private area to host your own parties, if of course you don’t want to be bothered by the crowds of people I was witness to.

Still smelling what must be the best ribs in town I proceeded into the kitchen, just a peek, not enough to be disobeying the employees only sign posted on the door.

The kitchen was alot bigger than was needed to feed the multitudes previously described but once again I failed to locate anyone, one last pass around by the bar to find a man possibly a manager and a waitress/ hostess.

I asked if they were open and the reply was yes, so I seated down by the door and prepared myself to indulge in these best ribs in town.

The menu was plain enough without alot, and prices were decent enough, all be it a little high for lunch, but my hunger knew no price tag at the moment and as quick as I could, I placed an order for an iced tea and some ribs.

At long last the wait was over and I could indulge myself, but wait the waitress returns with a sweet tea and no ribs.

“Sorry but the ribs won’t be ready until 1:30, would you like to order something else or wait?” It was 12:00 at that time so there was no way I was going to wait, so I grabbed my coat rolled down my sleeves and left in search for something to fill the void that Bourbon West Bar and Grill couldn’t fill.

Tyler Texas BarbequeTo learn of how that hunger was satisfied you will have to read the post entitled Rick’s on the Square.

I understand that its more of a dinner restaurant but if its going to be open at lunch it needs to be ready for customers, and if you have the “best ribs in town” you better be ready to prove it to critics.

The facility is nice, the customer service was late, overall it is fairly clean and the food is something that may forever be a mystery to me.

Jack O’ Diamonds in Tyler

July 2nd, 2010

When shopping for cars the most annoying thing about the shopping experience is definitely the salesmen. I hate that the moment you drive into the Jack O’ Diamonds parking lot you are immediately bombarded by men trying to get you to buy a car before you even have a chance to park.

We have been looking around for a car lately, and decided to hold our breath and deal with the annoying salesmen at Jack O’ Diamonds. They have cars in all sizes. It is a great place to look if you want a car for your family that gets more than 15 gallons of gas per a mile.

The car lot has many different makes of cars for sale. You can buy Lincoln, Mercury, Honda, and even can find a few Fords there. Personally I love the look and make of a Honda. We came looking for a car that was able to fit more than two car seats and that would not empty our wallets because of the horrible gas mileage.

Not to our surprise we were immediately approached by a salesman before we were able to park. They asked questions before we were even able to get out of the car or get our children out. Once we really explained that we wanted all these things at a price that would fit our low budget, the salesman was extremely helpful, and surprisingly was not pushing us to get way over our budget.

He showed us a few cars that were exactly what we were looking for, but we needed to discuss the purchase a little bit longer before we went ahead and bought the car. We were very impressed by how the salesman was not extremely pushing to make the decision and respected our need to sleep on it.

Although we did not purchase a car that day we will be going back in hopes that we get the same car salesman and find the car perfect for us. Finding a car is extremely stressful and I think that sales men should help you make a choice and not put more pressure on you that are unnecessary.

Sadly, usually the salesmen are more pushing and frustrating at Jack O’ Diamonds. Even as we were leaving, another salesman yelled after us, asking why we did not find what we were looking for. Hopefully if you are looking for a Tyler car you will have the luck we had!

Hastings Video Store in Tyler

March 26th, 2010

Hastings

4015 S Broadway Ave
Tyler, TX 75701-8727

Hastings parking lot maybe an awesome hang out for the East Texas teenagers, but I think that there are more people in the parking lot than in the store. The store does have a great variety of books, movies, music, and video games. This store is probably the dirtiest store in East Texas. I feel like I have to take a bath after renting a movie. The well known store may be struggling to stay in business.

As I try to find the door through the clouds of smoke from the teenagers hanging out side the door, I already know that I really want to get a movie and leave as fast as you can. You can dig through the towers in the aisle to find cheap movies to buy. “Buy two get the third for a penny.” They have great deals for movies on sale and as the world of electronics grows to the newest level; Hastings is starting to sale and rent movies on Blue Ray.

Hastings lack of convenience may be the thing that puts them out of business. Although you can shop online for movies and music and much more, you have to return to the store. The great thing about the competing rental companies, such as Red Box and Netflix, is that they are convenient to your every day life.

The odd and, many times, unhelpful people that work at Hastings add to the frustration of the shopping experience. The oddly disturbing action figures and adult board games makes me rush out the store with my hands over my eyes.

Although you can find most music, movies and books, I would look everywhere in Tyler before I endure the torture of shopping in Hastings. The good thing about the store is that they buy those old movies and CDs that have been sitting on your shelf just collecting dust and taking up space.

Hastings is my “last stop store”; if I can not find a movie I have been wanting to watch for months in Red Box, or the dollar rental machine at Brookshires, or if it is not at the other failing rental store, Blockbuster, I go to Hastings, then I go home and take a bath until I can not smell the stink of the store in my hair.
