New Texas Law Requires Sonogram Prior to Abortion

May 24th, 2011

Yesterday, I wrote an article speculating about Governor Perry’s political aspirations. In that article, I suggested that the Governor has not always been true to the conservative ideas he espouses around election time. But I have to give him some credit when and where I believe it’s due. Today our governor signed House Bill 15 into law. The new legislation requires any woman seeking an abortion, to first undergo a sonogram. The physician is then required to show and explain the image to the mother, as well as allow her to hear the child’s heart beat.

The purpose of course is to make sure that women are being provided with all possible information before they make the life changing decision to terminate a pregnancy. Critics of the bill say it makes an already difficult decision even more difficult. Really?! By making sure all information is available? Is that the story the pro-aborts are going to stick with? Honestly I don’t see why this is such a terrible idea. No one is prohibiting the woman from making her choice. The goal is simply to make sure she doesn’t make one she’ll regret later!

Some Pro-life groups were also opposing the law on the basis that it provides too many loopholes. These organizations fear that the law is too easy to bypass thanks to exemptions like the baby being a product of rape or incest, or being diagnosed as having “an irreversible medical condition.” While I agree that these and other exemptions are probably too open to interpretation, and while I’m quite sure that various groups who promote abortion will certainly employ them to the point of questionable legality, I have to think that an imperfect protection of the rights of mother and child, is certainly better than no protection at all! Look, this all seems very reasonable to me! At the end of the day who really loses? A child gets another shot at living to term. And the mother has the peace of mind that comes from knowing she’s making a huge decision with all available information, and maybe avoids one that will ruin her life and cost the life of her child unnecessarily. Oh… well of course if she chooses to forgo the abortion and carry the child to term, that’s one less abortion performed and one less check written to a doctor or “reproductive counseling” organization. But of course, nothing this serious is ever about money!

Medicaid Drug Tests?

January 31st, 2011

To no one’s surprise, a new rumor started on Facebook. It did not take long for the status that read “Kentucky just passed a great law. To be eligible for food stamps, Medicaid, or cash assistance for your children or yourself, you have to pass a DRUG test. Now every other state should do the same! If you agree re-post.” to flood my Facebook home page. After I did some investigation (mainly just looked at snopes.com) I found that no such law had passed, but this law has been proposed to the Kentucky state legislature’s House of Representatives. The proposed bill states that once a year anyone who is eligible and applies for government living assistance will have a drug test once a year. After I read about this bill I wondered why this has not passed and why the state of Texas has not thought of this.

I think that Medicaid is a great thing. I am not on insurance and there is no way I could pay the bills if something happened to me or my children. I have been on pregnancy Medicaid with two of my pregnancies. When you are on Medicaid you are asked if you have or do use illegal drugs, and you talk to a social worker, but they just mark down what you say without testing you. The drug test would be helpful in this situation, not only as reliable source of the situation that this child will be brought into, but also this can show doctors the proper treatments to give to these pregnant women.

The purpose of cash assistance is to help people in desperate situations get back on their feet. While on the cash assistant programs they require that each person applies for jobs on a regular basis. Well if they did a drug test before people are accepted for the cash assistance the program would know whether they would even be hired, since most jobs require a drug test.

I think that it would be great if it was true if the rumors were true, and if at least one state would start doing drug tests to be allowed to even apply for government assistance. Many of these government assistance programs work along side of Child Protection Services; you would think that these programs would want to know the situation of the home in more detail than what the parents write on the application. I have nothing against people getting on government assistance and I understand that people run into hard times, but it bothers me that people take advantage of these services. Texas really needs to do something different when it comes to applying for these services and I think a drug test would be a great new law.

WalMart Confusion

August 2nd, 2010

When I walk into Tyler’s Wal-Mart, on the corner of the Loop and highway 64, I am greeted by a group of strange men just hanging out by the entrance. I get sick of these groups of guys that shout at woman to get their numbers. I can not believe girls would actually give these guys their numbers.

As I walk through the dirty store that always seems like the floor is sticky, I get run into a bunch of little kids running through the store with no parents in sight. I get frustrated and walk down to get a tube of toothpaste. As I grab a tube of tooth paste, a shirt is stuffed behind it. I go to get a few groceries and grab something to eat at the Deli.

Some woman sell barbeque chicken chunks with flies flying all around. Some chicken falls on the greasy dirty counter and they just grabbed it up and threw it back in the container with all the other food. I was really grossed out and decided not to eat there. There is a McDonalds connected to this Wal-Mart. I don’t think I would ever eat there.

It always looks really dirty and really greasy. This Wal-Mart is known to be very dangerous and be very careful if you go there, especially at night, when really strange people can not find a better place to hang out at 11:00 at night.

It seems like some of the most stuck up people drive around the Wal-Mart off of Broadway. I always get cut off while walking into the store. One time a car was waiting for me to load my bags of groceries into the car put my two babies into the car seats and buckle them in and put my cart away, just so they could get my spot.

I was trying to hurry to be nice and they kept honking and when I looked up at the driver I noticed that they were signaling for me to hurry up. Excuse me? They should just go find another place. Oh, and by the way, please do not park in the pregnancy parking unless you are pregnant.

So I hate going there because of all the rude people that shop there. But there isn’t any other Wal-Mart that is so convenient. I can just go right across the street to Target, or stay in the same parking lot and enjoy a great burger at Whataburger. The store inside is a lot cleaner than the Wal-Mart I formally talked of, but it always is so crowded.

Every time I go to check out it seems like they have about twenty lanes and maybe five are open. So there will be at least ten people in front of you with their baskets over flowing with stuff. So Wal-Mart, open a few more check-outs, will you?

My very favorite Wal-Mart in Tyler is the newest one on Troop Highway. It is the furthest for me but I think it is worth the drive. It is the largest Wal-Mart in Tyler and always the most orderly. The food always seems so much cleaner and even the people are nicer. The parking lot is larger so people can find their own parking space and don’t have to be so rude to park.

They have great furniture for babies. It is easy to register here because everything so organized compared to the other ones. The people are nicer because they don’t feel cramped into and over crowded store with rude strangers. The greeter is even nicer. Which I think greeters are so funny. What a great job. They are called “greeters” but honestly,  how often do they really greet you. Its like security. Security from all those strange pathetic people that shop lift. But that is off the point I am trying to make.

Troop Wal-Mart greeters actually tell people hello. But I don’t think they deal with as much shop lifting as the Wal-Mart off of highway 64. There is always police there. So if you need to go to Wal-Mart go to Troop, even if it is out of the way. They always seem to have more lanes open so it takes a lot less time to come in and get out.

I’m not the biggest fan of Wal-Mart, not like I use to be. But it is the one stop for all your needs and the prices are amazing. I can ever leave the store with out first checking out the five dollar movie rack, or the three dollar sales in the baby clothes section. Wal-Mart has a policy that they will not be under sold, so you are sure to find what you need or want at a  great price.

You will find everything for every room in your house and for your car. If you need a new bed spread or a new rug, if you need new furniture or television, you will always find it at Wal-Mart. Keep your eyes open for the seasonal selection at great prices and when it starts to becomes out of season look for amazing sales.

Have fun shopping with your kids in their toys section, I always have to take a walk down the pink aisle just to see what is new and what is on sale. So shop Wal-Mart to find off-brand and brand names at a great price, “always”.
