Homecoming in Tyler Texas

September 12th, 2010

It’s that time of year in East Texas again. The time high school football players and debutants eagerly await, and once it’s over they remember it for the rest of their lives. Of course I’m referring to Homecoming! As someone who attended a small private school neither homecoming, nor prom were major parts of my high school experience. Consequently, as a Jr. High and High School teacher, I’ve been educated by my students as they go through the process of preparation.

Six Man FootballHistorically these traditions have not been a major part of private, religious education, but in recent years, private school parents and students have expressed the desire for a more traditional high school experience in the most positive sense. To meet this demand even smaller institutions have started making them a part of their fall calendars. Case in point, King’s Academy held its Homecoming football game and dance this weekend. While the school is on the small side, the student body forges ahead, determined to uphold the time honored rituals of college- prep schools. One interesting aspect of holding these events in a smaller school is that everyone participates. Attendance is always good thanks to a rather positive function of peer pressure. The football team makes up around half the male population of King’s, which says a lot for the student’s school spirit in my opinion.

After a tough loss at last year’s homecoming game, (which is actually played at Grace Community’s field), The King’s Academy Royal Knights bounced back in a big way this year. They defeated the Bloomburg Wildcats fifty seven to thirty. It’s good to see the opportunities growing for private school students. With more challenging academics than most public institutions, and an expanding field of extra- curriculars, private and religious schools are more and more looking like the best of both worlds.

Opportunity, Values and Academics

January 8th, 2010

Grace Community School was founded in 1973 by a group of families from the church, who wanted to offer a Christian education to area Tyler Texas parents. The doors opened to sixty students ranging from second to twelfth grade. Today the school still places faith and scripture at the heart of all its courses of study. The purpose is to build Christian character into the student. The school also aims at producing young people with a Christian world view who are capable of defending their faith in an increasingly secular society.

But G.C.S. is also believes in challenging academics and ranks at the top among all Tyler Schools. The curriculum is designed to build critical reasoning skills and impart a wide knowledge of life and learning. The teachers are the school’s greatest assets. They are masters of their subjects and have themselves, a love of learning; a trait they transfer to their students. The staff serves the students not only as subject teachers, but as councilors, prayer partners and Godly examples.

Student life at the school is rich, with a full list of athletic and extra curricular activities. The sports program consists of football, basketball, baseball, volleyball, soccer, etc. Student clubs like yearbook, student government and many others are located on campus and help to create an authentic high school experience.

The campus is beautiful and almost always expanding in order to accommodate an ever growing student body. The athletic facilities are particularly impressive. The elementary school is located on the church grounds at 3215 Old Jacksonville Road, and the jr. high and high School at 3001 University Boulevard.

After nearly forty years of service to the Tyler area, Grace has grown into a school of nearly a thousand students. If you’re looking for a place with the opportunities of a public school, the traditional Christian values of a private school, and the academics of a college preparatory school, Grace Community School could be the place for your child.
