East Texans Really Have No Clue When it Comes to Energy Savings

September 28th, 2011

energy efficiency tyler txGo ahead, think of one of the best ways to save money as it relates to Texas home energy costs? Most people have this obsession with turning off the lights and even I remember being nagged about this growing up with my parents but sadly this will do little to truly impact your energy savings at home.

If you think turning off the lights every chance you get will do the most to save energy at home you have your energy-saving priorities about this all out of whack and it is hitting your pocket-book because of your cluelessness. You are not alone in your clueless behavior as a study shows that most of us don’t really know what actually works best to lower our energy bill.

Don’t get me wrong, if you have a habit of turning off the lights you are not doing anything wrong but don’t pat yourself on the back and not do anything else as you are living a false sense of energy savings. The reality is that if you swapped out your light bulbs for the more energy-efficient ones as well as replaced your light switches with motion sensing ones you would do a lot more to reduce your energy.

You could even leave your energy-efficient lights on all day and night and save more energy than continuing to use the older energy hog light bulbs. If you have old wiring in your house you may find that replacing your lights may not help as the bad wiring may terminate those bulbs prematurely but if you are in a new house with proper wiring you have no excuse.

The reason it may be better off leaving your lights on with the newer efficient bulbs is simply the lifespan is cut short with frequent on and offs. By only turning them off when you go to bed you protect the investment in the more expensive more energy-efficient bulbs and realize the true return on investment in those bulbs from their dramatic increase in energy efficiency compared to old bulbs.

The study has found that if you were to try curtailing your energy by not using old appliances and bulbs as much you would still be using way more energy compared to simply upgrading all your energy using equipment and appliances to new more energy-efficient technology.

Overall the study found that people take themselves off the hook if they are doing one or two energy curtailment tasks such as turning off the lights and using the dishwasher less frequently. The problem with this is that the perceptions are completely wrong as by simply upgrading the lights and appliance these things could be used even more and save a household a substantial amount of money and energy.

In conclusion if you were to do just two things to increase the energy efficiency in your home they should start with replacing your light bulbs and weatherizing a home. You can do these things very simply by picking up do it yourself weatherization kits at a local hardware store. You can blow in attic insulation as time permits and seal doors and windows with the weather-stripping kits you have bought.

The number 3 most energy-efficient task you can do for your home is a bit more costly but can be financed and the energy savings will subsidize its purchase. Guess what it is? It is installing a more efficient heating and/or air conditioning unit. With home construction and home repair problems I constantly experience at my house I can get really frustrated as I have no construction back ground and cannot really fix too many of these things myself. I love to try but I usually screw something up along the way.

What I love to get is a helpful tip along the way that shows me a quick way to fix one of the many problems you often see in an older built house like mine. Many old houses have air conditioning ducts that have never been wrapped with insulation or had the cracks painted with a paint substance called mastic.

If you have been in your homes attic and have noticed that your ducts are not wrapped in insulation than you can almost bet that mastic has not been applied either. What mastic does is to seal the duct which typically reduces the air leakage coming out of those duct systems around the size of a large pizza.

Just imagine having a a whole the size of a pizza on the side of your house where your cool AC air just blows right out of. This is what is happening if you have not had your duct work sealed using mastic. This job can easily be done by a home owner and requires two very easy to get things and nothing more. You simply go to the hardware store and buy a can of mastic and a paint brush.

mastic ac duct paintingNext go up into your attic and paint the mastic around where each duct piece connects to the next one. You will be up in your attic awhile so be sure to wait until the sun goes down to do this work.

By doing this small construction job that requires little construction knowledge you can reduce your monthly electric bill dramatically.

If you would like an AC contractor to come to your Tyler home and check out this possibility for you I recommend giving Smith County Aire Serv a call at (903) 592-7773.

What is one of the cheapest ways to go green in Tyler Texas?

August 2nd, 2011

Aire Serv of Smith County
As in most of the country we are in what the weather men are calling the heat dome. This dome of heat has kept temperatures above 100 degrees going on over 30 days now. At this time many peoples air conditioning bills are doubling in price.

The Texas ERCOT electric grid is experiencing record breaking demand which means if you are not locked into a fixed electric rate you will likely get a pretty nasty looking bill.

When it comes down to it it doesn’t matter a whole lot what your electric rate is if your home is not energy efficient. Regardless of your electric rate you will likely see your bill double in price as you use twice as much electricity usage.

The main way your home uses this additional energy is by the energy your air conditioning system uses. In East Texas we spend most of our money on the electricity bill on air conditioning charges.

In places like Seattle Washington they go year round without ever turning on an AC unit. Since we do not have the luxury of that it is important that you insulate your attic and look into upgrading to a high efficiency air conditioner.

A high efficiency unit can reduce our electricity bill by about 1/3rd. You may spend a couple thousand more on a high efficiency unit but the money comes back to you right away which makes it a very smart low cost money saving option.

Of course insulating your attic is one of the cheapest ways but upgrading your AC unit is right behind that. Aire Serv of Smith County can help you with looking at high efficiency air conditioner options. They offer financing as well so you don’t have to pay for all of the cost right away.

Now is a good time to look into the small cost involved in significantly reducing your electric bill in Tyler Texas.
