Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

February 9th, 2011

Cystic Fibrosis FoundationCystic Fibrosis is a life-threatening disease that starts at birth. The child can get it if both parents are carriers of defective CF gene. Mucus builds up in the lungs and organs or a person with Cystic Fibrosis and this causes their organs and lungs to shut down and many people have to get transplants; but even transplants will not heal Cystic Fibrosis because Cystic Fibrosis dwells in the cells. Over 30,000 children and adults in the United States alone has been diagnosed with CF. There is no known cure for Cystic Fibrosis for the time being. There are many diets, therapies, and hospital care that can help with people live with this disease. Many people have passed away very young due to this disease. A young girl who grew up in Tyler just recently passed away after having a lung transplant that her body rejected. She was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis as a toddler, and had to live a large amount of her life in hospitals and clinics. She was only 23 when she passed away. She lived with Cystic Fibrosis and knew the dangers and reality of the disease but she celebrated and made the most of the life that she was given to live.

Cystic Fibrosis is closer than we know. There are many things we can do to help with the research of Cystic Fibrosis. In 1955 The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation was founded. At that time children with CF were not expected to live longer than a few years old. The study of this disease has come a long way but they still have not found a cure and many people are passing away due to this disease. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is a non-profit organization that supports scientists and doctors that are searching for a cure. They run on support and donations. There have been many different businesses in Tyler that has raised money for this foundation. McAlister’s Deli, Double Dave’s Pizza, and many other places have had events to raise money to support the search of CF. the CF foundation has an annual walk at different locations in East Texas. The next event coming to East Texas is at the new BJ’s restaurant. They are opening their doors to many different invited guests to eat from their special complimentary menu, but ask that everyone that eats there gives a donation to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

These events are a great way to reach out to our community and the many people that are suffering or have lost loved one due to this disease. You can be a part of something great! If you want to know more about the foundation, the disease, or want to know how to donate to the cause you can get more information at www.cff.org.

Living Alternatives

January 31st, 2011

In 1982 Beverly Kline wanted to help out a young girl who struggled with an unplanned pregnancy. She found that the only place that offered free pregnancy tests was an abortion clinic, which counseled girls to have an abortion. She saw the need that there needed to be a place that encouraged girls to give their unborn baby life, and offered free pregnancy test. She started to help girls out of her small apartment. Later Bev, along with five staff members opened the Crisis Pregnancy Center. A year later they opened a home for pregnant women with no support. Since then the Living Alternatives has blossomed and has touched thousands of life through their many programs.

Pregnancy can be a scary thing, whether you are single, married, young, old, healthy, or unhealthy. The thing that makes the experience easier and a lot less stressful is the support of family and the people around you. Sadly, many young girls become pregnant and have not support system. Living Alternatives offers these young girls encouragement, counseling, and even an education. Living Alternatives has four main branches around East Texas. Father Heart is a home for young pregnant girls to go live during their pregnancy. Here each girl will live a structured life style under the leadership and encouragement of the staff. This structure includes counseling, healthy diets, and exercise, and if the girls are willing they can finish up their high school education here. The large house gives the girls the luxury of their own space. They are allowed to have guests visit and allowed to leave the house, but each you lady is expected to respect the other girls, the staff, and the rules of the facilities. Father Heart has staff that takes girls to doctor visits and whatever else they need. This is a great place for young girls to come and be encouraged during this life changing time, whether they are giving the baby up for adoption or if they are planning on raising their baby.

Another great branch of Living Alternatives is the Pregnancy Resource Center. The Pregnancy Resource center is located by the Tyler Junior College main campus. The center offers all girls free pregnancy tests and free sonograms. The extremely polite staff keeps everything confidential. When you walk into the center you will have a couple papers to fill out, this is only for their fills and will in no way be used against you. They want to know about your support system, and want to be an encouragement towards young women. Young women will have a private pregnancy test, and the staff will have a few minutes to counsel and encourage these girls. If the test is positive, the center will offer schedule each girl for a free sonogram. The pregnancy center will help girls find doctors and offers a proof of pregnancy (which is needed for pregnancy Medicaid).

Building Blocks offers young moms all different types of assistance. Many people have donated a ton of stuff to Building Blocks for children and mothers. These donated toys, furniture, clothing, and much more are for families in need. Building blocks also offers encouragement to new moms. There are many women that understand the strain and stress of raising children, and they are there to offer a hand of encouragement, and an ear to listen to the things mothers are stressed with. If you have a huge box full of baby clothes and just want to get rid of the box that is just collecting dust and taking up room, you can donate it to the building box program. The building is located next door to the Pregnancy Resource Center (near TJC).

Sometimes young women are not prepared to raise a child and have to make a purely selfless decision of giving the baby up for adoption. Many women’s biggest fear of placing their baby up for adoption is a misunderstanding that once they place the baby for adoption they will have no idea where the baby is or if the baby is taken care of. Loving Alternatives is an adoption agency that is sensitive to the birth mother. The birth mother can meet and get to know the family that will be raising the child that they are giving birth to. They can even get letters and pictures of the child, through the adoption agency, as he or she grows up. This is an encouragement to the birth mom that shows that the baby is loved and is in a good home.

Father Heart, The Pregnancy Resource Center, Building Blocks, and Loving Alternatives all work together to help young women make the best decision for mommy and baby. The staff at each facility will bring encouragement to the decision that women will carry this baby and choose life for their unborn child.

Interruption Marketing and Tyler Mall Kiosks

January 21st, 2011

Simon Mall Tyler TXAt the Tyler Texas Simon mall you have likely been asked if you wanted your hair straightened no matter whether you were a guy, a girl, your hair was already straight, and any number of other reasons.

This is interruption marketing at its best depending on the perspective. You may have been an old grandfather going to the GNC store to buy some prune juice pills but a nice young girl with a foreign accent got your attention and asked if you want your hair straightened or a finger nail manicure.

The grandfather may have just come off an assisted living bus that dropped off him and several other elderly people off and next to prune juice pills a manicure and conversation with a pretty talkative young girl sounds great!

So when walking through the mall in Tyler Texas and you get asked for a manicure even though you are a 34 – 84 year old guy think about the service to the elderly. You can see a positive in that these kiosk guys and girls provide a level of social interaction for neglected elderly that visit the local Tyler mall sometimes just to stretch their legs.

David’s Bridal Wedding Dresses in Tyler Texas

September 28th, 2009

David’s Bridal is the most popular store for your special day. As I walked into Tyler’s popular wedding dress center, overwhelmed with white dresses and thousand dollar price tags, I take my first step to prepare for the most important day of a young girl’s life. The purchase of a wedding dress, is not like any other purchase. The wedding day is the time a woman is truly pampered. The girdle, the slip, the shoes, the veil, the layers and layers of lacy material, brings out the inner princess in us all. Woman gather around you parading choices to make your day just as you have always dreamed.

Walking down the crowded aisles displaying wedding dress after wedding dress, dresses grab at your ankles. The loud chatter of over enthusiastic brides-to-be fills the air. Bridesmaids’ griping about their disdain of their dresses rings in your ears. Its everything you dreamed, people waiting on you, friends awing, until you see the five guys sitting on the couches watching you and the other brides changing. Why are they there? Women are running around in their underwear and slips. There should be a rule against this kind of weird perversion. Do these guys even really want to be there, or were they dragged by their super controlling girlfriends that need their opinion for the new prom dress?

For the most part I love David’s Bridal in Tyler Texas. I love the butterflies that you get in your stomach when you find that perfect dress. I love the little sticker that makes your feet dance that reads “50 percent off”. I love standing on that pedestal dressed in the most memorable thing a girl can put on her body. I love the online access that makes it easy for your fiancé’s sister that lives in Alaska to get the same dress as your other bridesmaids in her size.

So after you get asked the question you waited so long for, make David’s Bridal your next step. But girls leave your men at home, they don’t want to be there anyway!
