Former Red Raider to take on Patriots

December 16th, 2010

Tyler's Matt Flynn hoists the 2007 BCS National Championship trophy

Green Bay Packers’ backup quarterback, and Tyler’s own, Matt Flynn, doesn’t normally get surrounded by the press in the locker room on media day, but this day’s different seeing as he’s preparing for what might be the toughest task of his football career so far: the New England Patriots.

Although word hasn’t officially been released to the public yet, Flynn will start against the Patriots Sunday night.

“I’m excited, and I’m going to go through the week like I’m definitely going to be playing and hopefully Aaron (Rodgers) can get back, but I’m just going to get in there like I’m going to be playing and prepare like it,” Flynn told the media.

Rodgers went down in last week’s 7-3 loss to the Detroit Lions. In his debut, Flynn completed 15-of-26 passes for 177 yards and one interception. The more experience, the better, and Flynn said getting the snaps he got last week helped a lot.

“I go from getting a handful of plays during the week to getting most all of them. So it’s been good getting the timing with the receivers and just small things like working snap counts with the offensive line. If I get a chance to get in there, the timing will be a lot better than last week.”

The 8-5 Packers will take on the 11-2 Patriots on the road.

“It’s definitely a big game,” Flynn said. “ It’s a night game, it’ll be on TV, but I’ve played in games before, I know not at this level, but I’ve been on the big stage before so that’s not going to really bother me. It’s just about getting on the plane Saturday, getting completely prepared and having my mind at ease that I prepared myself as much as I can.”

Flynn knows and is grateful for having the respect of his teammates.

“I can’t speak for everyone, but I will speak for the receivers-we’ve got all the trust in the world in Matt,” Packers receiver Jordy Nelson told packers.com. “We said it last week when he came into the game against Detroit. He would take a couple throws back, but I thought he performed very well.

“I told him on the bus, ‘Right now, the receiving corps, we believe in you.’ We actually felt that from his rookie year when he came in and played well in the preseason and moved up and got second-string quarterback. We know what he can do. He won a national championship in college, and you have to be a good quarterback to do that.”

Before winning that national championship, Flynn quarterbacked the Robert E. Lee Red Raiders to a state championship during his junior year in 2001 where they fell short to Mesquite High School.

The following year, as a senior, he threw for 1,679 passing yards and nine touchdowns while rushing for 305 yards and 12 touchdowns, and despite playing his last four games with a broken foot, he led his team to the state semifinals where the Red Raiders lost to Midland High School.

After high school, Flynn attended Louisiana State University.
For his first three years, he served as backup quarterback JaMarcus Russell.
As a fifth year senior, he finally got time under center as he led the Tigers to a BCS National Championship game where they beat the Ohio State Buckeyes 38-24. Flynn was named MVP of that game.

The Packers drafted Flynn in the seventh round of the 2008 NFL Draft and signed a contract through the 2011 season.

Based on what Flynn tells the media, he seems ready to go, but’s he’s got a true test in front of him Sunday night.

Grapeland Drive thru Safari

July 22nd, 2010

Texas has always been land rich! Given the size of our great state I guess it was inevitable that we would be on the lookout for unique ways to use the land that we have. In the past few months I’ve investigated and written on a number of people’s imaginative uses of our area’s rolling hills and sprawling country side. I’ve read about balloon races, zip-line tours, water parks, big game preserves, and drive-through wild life parks. Among the latter is the Cherokee Trace Drive thru Safari Park. My impression of this park was very positive, but little did I realize that there is another such refuge in Grapeland.

The Grapeland Drive thru Safari boasts three hundred fifty animals including: zebras, buffalo, llamas, axis deer, fallow deer, camel, kangaroo, and many other species. They are located a mile to the north of the City of Grapeland, on fifty nine acres of natural habitat. So how do the two area safaris compare? Well based on the reading that I have done, much smaller and the animals and exotic species less numerous. They do have a barrel train that visitors can ride around the park for only ten dollars a seat (or barrel). The train is pulled slowly around park by a mower or a four wheeler. This is great option for those bringing a group of The Grapeland Safari is actually quite a bit cheaper. Although it seems the park is school children or other youngsters. They also offer a bounce house to young visitors at the rate of a dollar for five minutes.

From what I can tell, Cherokee Trace is definitely a larger, more developed site. Visitors pay more but the experience seems more centered on the park itself as well as the animals. Either stop would probably be memorable and enjoyable for the kids, but I suggest paying a bit more for what appears to me to be a more educational experience. For those interested in Grapeland, or if readers want to compare the two parks the websites are as follows: www.grapelanddrivethrusafari.com, and www.cherokeetrace.org. Readers can also search this site for my original article on Cherokee Trace entitled simply Cherokee Trace Drive Through.

After revisiting my original article I found a reader wrote about a rather negative experience he’d had at Cherokee Trace. I’d be interested in the experiences of other visitors to either park. Is his experience unique or common? Hopefully others had better experiences than that of this particular reader.

Buffalo Wild Wings in Tyler Texas

Buffalo Wild Wings in Tyler TX

Being married to a dedicated sports fan, having young toddlers, and being a dedicated fan of pretty much any popular reality show, the arguing of what show to watch gets pretty ridiculous, and the DVR quickly fills up with shows you forget to delete.

But in my journey for answers for our issue, I came to realize that I am not the only person with this problem. Men are always forced to watch our movies and television shows. Women are annoyed at their husbands yelling at the television set and trying to chest bump the kids.

Why not send your husband somewhere that he can watch the game with other chest bumping crazed men?

At Buffalo Wild Wings the restaurant is covered wall to wall with giant television screens. I felt sorry for the company when Tyler started the smoking ban. The restaurant had a great idea for the issues of second hand smoke, two separate rooms.

People that smoke don’t have their rights taken away and people that do not smoke do not have to breathe it. But I will digress from declaring my personal opinions of human rights.

They have a great bar in the separated room. The two rooms are separated by a glass wall. The bar is great to hang out with your friends and they even have a couple arcade games.

But besides the drinks and full bar, video games, and large televisions, Buffalo Wild Wings has pretty good food. It definitely is not the best buffalo wings in town (if you are looking for the best wings in town, in my opinion, Wing Stop tops them all); but no matter they still are very satisfying and there is a great selection of sauces and meats. Have your own choice of boneless, or mild or honey barbeque.

If you are planning to go to Buffalo Wild Wings on a day that there is a big game, I recommend that you get there early because that small building gets full really fast. Also sit by the door because if you are trying to leave during the game you may have to climb over people, or at least feel like you are climbing over people.

I never have had an issue or a compliment about the service at the Tyler Buffalo Wild Wings, but I have had the worse service that I have ever had at any restaurant in my life, at the restaurant in Longview, about a year ago. Since my family and I had to endure that horrible service we are yet to return to the Longview restaurant.

I really recommend Buffalo Wild Wings in Tyler to meet up with friends and get a drink. But do not expect the best wings in the world there, but expect to make memories with your friends, and have a great time.
