ETCA’s Jim Patillo Memorial Golf Tournament

May 31st, 2011

East Texas Christian AcademyI often write about events happening at area private schools, particularly when those schools are trying to raise funds. One school that I’ve not written a whole lot about, due largely to the fact that I really have no close ties to it; is East Texas Christian Academy (ETCA). Given however that I am a proponent of Private Christian Education, I thought I would give them a plug. As readers may or may not be aware, ETCA is experiencing quite a bit of growth. They just completed a new facility, and are now working on raising funds to grow their athletic department. Private schools in general, are likely to continue to grow in the face of cut backs in the public schools, especially in Tyler where the education market has been somewhat flooded in recent years. And with private athletics offering more opportunities every year, parents and families are likely to take an even greater interest in non-government schools.

On Monday, June 20th, ETCA will be holding the Jim Pattillo Memorial Golf Tournament, to raise money for its own athletic department. It will be held at Holly Tree Country Club and begins at 8:30 am. Fees include essentially green fees, cart and lunch. They run one hundred twenty five dollars for a single participant, and five hundred per team. The deadline to participate is June 10th. To register for the Jim Pattillo Memorial, call Aubrey Ballard at (903) 561-8642. For more information on the event and or the school, visit their web site at http://www.etca.org . Tyler Christian Preschool

Well it is now after midnight, and I’m only now sitting down to do something I’ve intended to do for some time.  It’s been about four months since I last published anything on the directory, but in that time it has been my intention to write about a tremendous local business that is having a lasting positive influence on area families.

As a single dad I know the guilt that many parents feel about dropping off their children at daycare before going to work. As the only bread winner in my house however, child care is for me, a necessary evil. After making the tough decision to place my son in someone else’s care during the day, my dilemma became one of determining the most suitable people with whom to leave him. Of course I wanted a safe secure location, with room out doors to play, and a caring and patient staff, who were well trained and accustomed to dealing all kinds of children, (in our case, a very active and energetic two year old boy). Perhaps most important to me was that he be in place where the teachers cultivate my son’s developing faith. In Tyler Christian Preschool, I found a daycare / preschool that offers all of these things.

After an admittedly shaky start due to facility and personnel issues, TCP has grown into an excellent Tyler institution. Its purpose is to provide a Christian environment where children from the ages of six weeks to five years can grow and develop. The building has undergone a series of updates and repairs and now offers a great space where the kids can play, learn and rest.

TCP’s curriculum is “Christian based.” It incorporates Bible stories, songs and gospel lessons. The teachers are terrific and do their very best to add to the children’s sense of safety, security and familiarity. Perhaps most important is the fact that the teachers genuinely care about their students and have the children’s best interest at heart.

Tyler Christian Preschool offers fulltime care for children ranging in ages from six weeks to six years. Part time after school care is available for students six to thirteen years old. During the summer months, full time care is also available for students six to thirteen years old. This includes activities and field trips.

While starting a new school can be a difficult transition in a child’s life, (and a parent’s for that matter); it doesn’t have to be traumatic. After a short period of transition (about a week or so), my son has come to love his school. Anytime we happen to pass Tyler Christian Preschool, he proudly shouts “that’s MY school!” to anyone in earshot.

I heartily recommend checking out Tyler Christian Preschool. They are located at 714 Shelley Dr. in Tyler, and can be reached via telephone at (903) 534 9987. Also see their website at www.tylercp.com.

Challenging Academics In A Christian Environment

January 8th, 2010

Well the children are happy to be off for the summer, and the last thing on their minds is returning to school. But for the parents it’s a time to evaluate the educational opportunities coming this fall. One such opportunity is offered by East Texas Christian Academy.

E.T.C.A. has been in existence since 1979. The Tyler Christian school was designed to offer challenging academics combined with a safe Christian environment. A central component of student life at E.T.C.A. is the development of Christian character. The concept of good citizenship extends to all aspects of student life; treatment of fellow students, showing respect to adults, and being disciplined in one’s studies. The scriptures are studied in the classroom on a daily basis. There are also chapel services throughout the week.

In the classroom, the teacher student ratio is kept low so as to allow for greater individual attention. From kindergarten through eight grades, the school applies the “Core Knowledge curriculum.”The ninth through twelfth grade classes are academically challenging and focus on preparing the student for college. The usual core classes and electives are offered by the school.

Also taught, are “The Six Pillars of Christian Character.” They are defined as: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. The teachers are the schools most important assets. They lead the students and build their character by presenting them with a Christian example to follow.

For the students the school offers a variety of experiences. There are numerous travel opportunities, both across Texas, and across the country. The school also has an active, competitive athletic program. Tennis, soccer, basketball, swimming, baseball and track round out the department. Lastly there are a number of student clubs which meet on campus. They include: Student government, Drama club, a prayer group and a number of others.

With its emphasis on Christian character and on strong academics, E.T.C.A. has definitely been a blessing to many graduates in Tyler Texas, perhaps it can be a blessing your family too.
