Andrews Center – Tyler

January 16th, 2010

Andrews Center is a Behavioral Health care System is located at 2323 W Front St., Tyler, Texas 75702.  Andrews Center is a non-profit charity, mental health and mental retardation center. They employ some of the best trained professionals in behavioral health care. I first found out about Andrews Center through the Salvation Army because they offer to take people that are there and in need of help to their center. I have actually been there myself once because of a report I once got from someone who thought I had some problems.

The staff there was very friendly and the wait was just about as long as any other doctor. When I was seen by a physician, she thoroughly evaluated me and came to the conclusion that the diagnosis that the other doctor gave was not true. What a relief to find out that I did not need any medication for something I didn’t have. I know it’s a scary thing to go to a mental place to find out if you are in need of any help in that area….but these days there are more people struggling mentally, emotionally, and physically than we would like to know. In addition to feeling awkward going there you may begin to think that there might be a problem with you and may become frustrated when you can’t figure out exactly what the problem is. The staff will make you feel comfortable as they determine if your are mentally unstable in some way.

In my opinion, we all are a little bit on the lonely side …we just don’t want to admit it because you feel you will be looked down upon and people won’t treat you the same. Just like any other illness you need to make sure you get the help necessary for you to start living life once again, like you used to. Andrews Center is very professional and nobody there will judge you for going there. Everything that they find out is very confidential. You don’t have to be afraid of people finding out about your issues.

Their mission is to serve the community to assure high quality, effective behavioral health care. You can be sure their value is provided in trying to recognize and affirm the dignity and worth of each individual. They also seek the best in others; and demand it from themselves. The Andrews Center takes care of each other and values ethics, honesty and integrity. The staff welcomes your questions and they will never turn you away because of your race, sex, age, religion or disability. My experience with Andrews Center has been good and I would encourage you to seek help, if you need it.

Roseland Plantation Bed and Breakfast

January 8th, 2010

The Roseland Plantation is one of the oldest historic places to visit in Tyler Texas but because it is outside the sity a little bit off of 64 many people that live in Tyler Texas have never heard of it before. Among some of the more unique aspects to the Roseland Plantation is the large steel building specifically erected to hold a life size painting of the last supper. The painting was commissioned by the rich lady who bought the plantation as a hobby to restore. The painting took many years to finish and is held in this air conditioned building where it remains in excellent condition. The Tyler Texas Plantation also has a few slave houses where the slaves that used to work on the plantation lived. You get to hear the details about the slave homes and more as a part of the tour of the Roseland. Roseland Plantation Tyler Texas

The Roseland Plantation also has a nicely restored log home on the property as a part of one of the houses available for occupancy at their bed and breakfast. We toured the log home and found it to be very authentic with some added modern touches that you would come to expect from a bed and breakfast of this quality. The plantation also has a church constructed on the property with some very unique stained glass windows and pictures. There are several pews and you immediately feel transplanted to small country church. This church building is not used for church services but is simply another unique facility on this location.

The Roseland Plantation has some additional houses on the property with several ornately decorated rooms that are used for the bed and breakfast. You will find things to admire about each room as you take the tour and will likely settle on a favorite that you may wish to stay in the next time you visit Tyler Texas or the Roseland Plantation. The bed and breakfast owners really enjoy the whole business they have here in East Texas and give a great tour. The owners are a pleasure to have serve you breakfast, lunch, and dinner or your choice as you stay here.

While staying at the Roseland you may be surprised to know that there is a delicious homemade hamburger restaurant just up 64 called Maggies in Ben Wheeler Texas. They have very good hamburgers and milk shakes made with Blue Bell ice cream. The hamburger grill is right inside an authentic looking log home which will add to your overall historic stay at the Roseland and your visit to East Texas. After eating at Maggies you might want to keep heading up the road to I-20. Take a right on I-20 and on your left across the highway is Splash Kingdom Water Park. Splash Kingdom is a Christian outdoor water park that has all the rides and attractions of any water park you may find in Dallas. The park is family oriented and Christian owned. The park is about a 10 star upgrade from the toddler spray park at Faulkner Park in Tyler.

One last note I can’t leave out. The Roseland plantation owner left all of the land from the plantation on to the Neches River to the slaves that used to work on the plantation. This land has been past down from generation to generation in East Texas and some of the people living on this land have ancestors that at one time were slaves of the Roseland Plantation.

When considering relocating to Tyler Texas, visiting friends or family, or just coming to Tyler for vacation we encourage you to try staying at the Roseland Plantation at least once and experience a truly unique and different sleeping arrangement. The bed and breakfast owners at the Roseland will greet you and show you around and make you feel comfortable. They run a very professional operation and the plantation makes a few hundred thousand dollars each year just from the demand of their facility for weddings and wedding receptions. In fact, the Roseland was voted the number one place for weddings and wedding receptions. I would have to agree that the Roseland would be a remarkable place to have a wedding or wedding reception and now that I think about it they even have a dance hall facility as well that would be a great place for a first dance.

Canton Trade Days Close To Tyler Texas

January 7th, 2010

Most of us from East Texas know about Canton Texas about 30 minutes from Tyler Texas. This place isn’t your typical flea market. In fact I wouldn’t use the word flea market when talking to a vendor at Canton trade days or they might just have to set you straight. Canton goes way back historically as being a gathering place where people would come to trade goods and services. The tradition goes back over 150 years and is a source of pride for the city of Canton TX known as “First Monday”.

First Monday trade days had to do with stray horses believe it or not. On the first Monday of the month when the judge in Canton arrived to convene his court. Canton at that time was an open range full of wild horses. The judge setup the first Monday as they day people could arrive with their horses in a horse auction. People would come from far and wide to trade and this auction is what has now turned into Canton trade days first Monday.

Please don’t get confused as if you come to Canton on the first Monday of the month there will be no gigantic flea market. The weekend prior to the first Monday of every month is when the Canton trade days extravaganza begins. This isn’t a run of the mill flea market but something you will need all 3 days to explore.

There are antiques available for purchase that can be had for good deals as well as marked up beyond what would be considered reasonable. It all depends on what you are looking for and how quickly you want to find it. If you do enough digging you will be able to pick up some pretty unique items for cheap.

At one time I was in the process of building a log house and I needed some old triple block pulleys. Ebay had them for sale for a little bit more than I wanted to pay so I went to Canton to see what I could find. I was able to get the triple block pulleys I needed for about half of what it would have cost on ebay. I bought a Yao Ming action figure still in the box for $1.00 and I believe this was a few dollars cheaper than what it would have cost new.

Many people are at Canton trade days behind a vendor booth almost as more of a hobby than to make a good living but they keep coming every month and some actually do make a good living. Depending on where you go in Canton will determine the type of stuff you will see and for what price. There are indoor and outdoor areas and places completely offsite that are open all month rather than just on first Monday.

Some businesses business model like Paul Michael have used Canton to capitalize on this hot spot for buying junk for the house. Paul Michael is offsite from Canton trade days and gets daily shopping traffic rather than just 3 days in a month. In fact I bet Paul Michael has siphoned a way a good deal of the shoppers that normally frequented Canton trade days. Pretty savy business sense if I do so say myself.

On our last visit to Canton we did visit Paul Michael but their stuff is quite pricey and so they pretty much serve the well to do. If you want to get good stuff for a cheaper price we recommend sticking with the trade day grounds.

Last visit to Canton we picked up all our cabinet hardware from their from a vendor booth called Cabinet Jewelry. We ended up saving about $2.00 per knob and handle that we used on our new cabinets than if we had of used Lowes or Home Depot.

When in Canton trade days you will want to eat something. There are a lot of fair food type places but pay special attention that you skip that corn dog and turkey leg and instead go to Cookin’ Cajans. This place was gone for a few years do to the owners having some health issues but is back in business again. This is one of those places that people drive an hour or two every month just to eat at so don’t forget to try it while your there.

I am not sure if Cooking Cajan’s is under new ownership as the original owner may have retired. While getting your food I recommend their crawfish etouffee, a Cajan egg roll, and some bread pudding. Hey go ahead and buy it all and if you can’t eat it all you will have leftovers for lunch tomorrow.

If your not a big bread pudding fan go over to Taylor’s homemade icecream and try that stuff. I always go to gets me some of that Taylor’s homemade icecream. Very good!

I personally go to Canton to browse the puppies for sale, eat some Cajan Food, buy an old farm tool, get a small toy for the baby, and look at some of the East Texans that rarely come out of the house (pretty fascinating moo,moo outfits worn by both men and women.)
