Texas Outdoor Family Workshops

June 3rd, 2011

Whenever I travel outside our state I’m barraged by the same old questions: “Do y’all still ride horses down there?” or “Isn’t it all deserts and cactus where you’re from?” Of course we here in Texas, know nothing could be further from the truth. In fact we’ve got everything from woods and forests to sandy coast lines to lakes, prairies, rolling hills and plains. And in our state, we’re blessed with a great park system in which we can experience the countryside. I know of no better way to break the old stereotypes about Texas, than to visit a few of our parks and see for oneself how beautiful and diverse our state’s typography really is.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has an interesting summer program going. It’s called the Texas Outdoor Family workshop (TOF). It’s essentially a way to promote the state park system, and get our young people outdoors. For sixty five dollars per family, a park ranger provides instruction to families and young people on things like: how to set up and break down a camp site, start a camp fire, cook outdoors, and participate in any number of nature activities. Events like fishing, kayaking and wildlife watchingare part of the program as well, where conditions exist. The park furnishes the necessary equipment to those who require it. Children as young as two are permitted, but five is recommended as the minimum age. Six campers per site are permitted.

The program is running throughout the summer, and new dates are being added regularly. In our immediate area, Tyler State Park is holding a workshop Saturday, June 4th. On the same weekend Eisenhower State Park, in Dallas will be holding their own version of the program as will Guadalupe River State Park, in San Antonio. More Events are scheduled for June 11th, including at one of my favorite Texas Parks, Dinosaur Valley State Park in Glen Rose. For more info on the workshop visit the following website at http://beta-www.tpwd.state.tx.us/outdoor-learning/texas-outdoor-family/ . Interested readers can also call the state office at (512) 389-8903.

Four Winds Faire

December 15th, 2010

The Four Winds Faire is most definitely the strangest place in East Texas. It is a way to get away from the normal chaos of everyday and step back into the renaissance time period. March, April, and October are full of special events, but the park is opened Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00am-7:00pm. The faire has many different attractions, shows, vendors, camp sites, and much more.

If you enjoy camping in the great outdoors and waking up to the smell of cooking bacon and eggs over the camp fire you had slept by that night, than you probably will not like the camp grounds of the Four Winds Faire. If you are a fan of sleeping in a colorful renaissance looking tent on freshly cut grass right next to another family you have never met also in a colorful tent than you may enjoy the camp grounds here. Camp fires are not allowed just anywhere. They have designated areas that are for camp fires. The whole camp ground is equipped restrooms and showers with hot water. You can also bring out the RV; the campgrounds have all the hookups for an RV.

Four Winds Faire has all different performers that come and put on a show. They have everything from armored knights, fire eaters, magicians, musicians, jugglers, pirates and much more. What is a renaissance faire without the comedy of singing nuns? Breaking The Habit is the comedy nun show that is put on at the renaissance faire. The exotic belly dancers show off their body and talent of shaking everything at their show Dream Harem. There are so many entertaining acts at the faire, but I do not know if they are always entertaining for the right reasons. You can not have a good renaissance faire without the popular sport of jousting. Come watch these guys who proclaim to be knights ram into each other with giant sticks while riding on horse back. The jousts are preformed twice daily at 12:00 and again at 5:00.

If you have always wished that there would be a joust at your wedding and Renaissance music you can have wedding at Four Winds Faire. Have you always wanted to walk down the aisle lined with knights with swords? Than this is the place for your big day. Four Winds takes care of many details including menus for your reception and decorations for your ceremony. The weddings are held at the Grove Wedding Garden, and you and you are soon to be spouse can look through the many different renaissance costumes that fit best for your wedding attire. This is a very interesting way to have your wedding, and your guests will remember your wedding.

Outside food is not allowed on the faire grounds, but you can bring alcohol, is it is contained in a mug or flask. You can also bring weapons as long as it is part of your renaissance attire and tied to your side. There is security on the grounds to make sure people are following the guide lines of the faire. So if you are looking for a way to get away from the year 2011 than Four Winds maybe you escape to a whole new world of knights, kings, queen, jesters, and all the royalty and commoners.

Christmas shopping for Him

December 8th, 2010

Guy Christmas Gift Ideas 2010Christmas shopping for men can be the hardest thing to do. Good thing that there are store in Tyler that have people that know things about electronics, tools, and hunting supplies, or most women would be more lost than they were before. If you are reading this and just got back from the store from buying a horrible Christmas sweater that you know your husband will never wear, but you will always get mad at him for not wearing, please, do everyone a favor and take it back.

Instead of trying to make your husband’s wardrobe even more embarrassing, get him something he could enjoy, and actually use. Academy has a great selection of gifts for the outdoor-loving man. If your husband loves to camp, you can find all different cooking supplies for the camp fire, sleep bags, tents, cots, and everything he will want to have the most enjoyable camping experience. Many men find fishing and camping as a way to escape their busy life. If you don’t really know what you are shopping for there are plenty of people that are willing to help you find the gifts for that special man. Academy does not only have great Christmas gifts for campers, hunters, and fishermen, but also for the football lover, baseball player, and golfer. If all you have heard from your man has been about the Texas A&M Aggies doing well in football you might want to take a look into Academy’s large selection of college football stuff. Fill his stockings up with anything from shot glasses to pens and pencils with the school’s logo on it. Academy has team t-shirts, jackets, jerseys, and much more. For the sport playing men you can find all different equipment and clothing for many different sports, such as golf, baseball, basketball, and many more.

If the out door life style in no way appeals to the man you are shopping for and you can usually find them in front of a video game or computer, there really is one store for you, Best Buy. I was recently walking through the popular electronic store and I felt more lost than any other store I have gone into. To me the difference between a Mac and a P.C. is determined by the young kid and the balding man on the Mac commercials. When I see something on my husband’s Christmas list like HDMI cables I don’t even know what department to look in, but I got help from the super nerdy employees. If there is a place in Tyler that carries the newest video games, you will be able to find it at Best Buy. I finally got to try out the popular Kinect game for xBox. I am really bad at it. Best Buy is having many different “Bundle and Save” deals. You can get blu-ray players, or video consoles bundled with all different video game accessories that are usually sold separately. If you bought these items separately you will have to pay more than their bundle costs. There is much more than video games and televisions at Best buy. You can get all your electronic needs for your car, your office, and home. They also sell cell phones and accessories for all the popular cell phone such as Droid and the iPhone. Best buy a large selection of computers and if you do not know what is the best selection there is some of the most computer obsessed people to help you.

Something I have realized about men is that they like to get gifts that they need and will use. Tools for men are like the “fall back” gift, if you do not know what else to get him, get tools. Men need tools, and will use them. Maybe they will try out their new tool set on the squeaky door that has been driving you crazy or that shelf that needs to be hung up and you have been staring at for months. Home Depot is a great store to find everything for all men in your life. If he finds enjoyment in his garden, Home Depot has all different beautiful plants and brand name gardening tools. But I would recommend that you kind of know what you are looking for if you are shopping at Home Depot or Lowes in Tyler. It always seems like at these places it is so hard to find help.

So as you are shopping for the men in your life this holiday think about gifts they will use and enjoy.
