Coming in July; the Wings of Tyler Air Show

May 21st, 2011

There’s a new event happening in Tyler this summer and it has the potential to draw a lot of attendees. It doesn’t happen until July 3rd but it’s the kind of thing I don’t often find out about until the morning of, so I thought this time I’d get out in front of this one. Of course I’m alluding to the “Wing’s Over Tyler Air Show.

The last few years the Historical Aviation Memorial Museum (HAMM) has sponsored what they call a static air show, which is essentially vintage and current military aircraft on display for the public. As fascinating as those shows were, this year’s show is complete with actual aeronautical and acrobatic performances by an assortment of pilots and aircraft. Now I’ve had the opportunity to attend some fairly major air shows in Houston and New Orleans, and I don’t expect this show to be on the scale of those larger events. However, it promises to be a tremendous occasion for our area. It’s also wonderfully timed coming on the weekend of the fourth of July. I find this to be a far more interesting and educational way to celebrate the nation’s independence, than simply pilling in the back of a truck and heading up to Lindsey Field to take in the fireworks. Not that there’s anything wrong with fireworks, but they do tend to lose their luster as I get older. I know my son and I are already looking forward to attending the air show.

There are a number of area groups sponsoring the show, including: the City of Tyler, the Chamber of Commerce, the Historical Aviation Memorial Museum, the Tyler Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the Tyler Jet Center. There are also opportunities for other businesses to get in on the sponsorships. Gates will open at nine, but performances won’t actually kickoff until one. For more information on this great new event, visit the Wings Over Tyler, webpage at http://www.wingsovertylerairshow.com

Art in the Park at the Goodman / LeGrand Museum

April 14th, 2011

This Saturday, April the sixteenth a new event called the Art in the Park, will be held on the grounds of the Goodman / LeGrand Museum. The event will feature local artists demonstrating a variety of forms, styles and techniques. Every form from watercolor to pottery and sculpture will be on display. There will also be lectures delivered by local professors from UT Tyler. Tours of the Museum and musical performances will be taking place throughout the day.

The Goodman / LeGrand Home, was first built in 1859, and is really a time capsule. Its original owner was killed in the War Between the States. Prior to his death, it was purchased by and army surgeon, who eventually passed it on to his daughter, who in-turn left it to the City of Tyler in 1939. It is now a museum containing original furniture, and other artifacts from the families, lives and careers of those who occupied it. Saturday’s event will run from ten am until four pm. Admission is free, so it’s a great opportunity to support the local arts, and take in some interesting local history. We went to the soft opening at BJ’s Restaurant for lunch yesterday

February 24th, 2011

BJ's Restaurant in Tyler
BJ's restaurant Tyler TXThe soft opening we went to was yesterday at 1:40 for lunch. They were booked up for almost all other times.

I got the Sweet Pig pizza which is like a deep dish gourmet canadian bacon pizza with really good seasoned tomatoes on top.

I loved my pizza as well as what they call their “hand crafted” root beer. I could have gotten a beer instead but I was just not up to it and root beer sounded great.

BJ’s restaurant is known as being a beer brewery but since Tyler is in the dry county of Smith we have to settle with getting the beer imported from Dallas Texas.

Good old Dallas import beer, nothing wrong with that. My wife got the chicken sesame salad or something to that effect and she liked it. She said her salad was light and just the right amount of taste.

The salads are not loaded down with ranch dressing so I think if you are trying to lose weight you will pleased with this.

For desert we had this cookie with icecream that was cooked in a small pan.

The desert was very good as well and overall I would give BJ’s a 5 star rating for the city of Tyler.

You will find the overall experience far and above better than what you see, hear and taste at Applebees, Chili’s, and the Olive Garden.

I hear to open a BJ’s restaurant you need to have like 6 million dollars just hanging out in a bank account not being used. The 6 million doesn’t include the type of capital investment required to buy the land, build the BJ’s and run payroll.

The guy who bought the BJ’s franchise in Tyler is a smart cookie when it comes to running restaurants and he in fact owns several.

The owner also owns the Wing Stops and Smashburgers in town.

I like BJ’s restaurant and will probably eat there a lot. I also happen to like Smashburger and Wing Stop quite a bit. I think this guy is on to something.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Tyler Texas

January 17th, 2011

Martin Luther King Day Tyler TexasThis year is the 25th anniversary of Martin Luther King Junior day to celebrate one of the greatest orators in American history. Martin Luther King Jr. was a peaceful activist for the African American civil rights movement. King used non-violent methods as practiced by Gandhi which launched him to iconic status as being a leader for civil rights not only in America but all around the world.

Civil rights are a class of rights that protect individuals’ freedom from unwarranted infringement by governments and private organizations, and ensure one’s ability to participate in the civil life of the state without discrimination or repression.

Tyler’s history for Martin Luther King day has been a slow progression from a day celebrated by African Americans in local black churches throughout the city to a day that is supported and celebrated by not only blacks but whites and other races as well. I will say however there is still way more black people at the MLK day march than white people so by no means is this day something celebrated by all but it is getting better.

The city of Tyler TX now actively assists and supports MLK day as the city voted several years back to make it a city recognized holiday. Kevin Eltife mentioned in his speech that the city of Tyler ha not accepted MLK day as a holiday as late as 1996 when he was mayor of Tyler Texas.

Martin Luther King day was soon after adopted as a city holiday and has continued until present. One of the leading contributors to making Martin Luther King day and march such a prominent part of the city of Tyler is the Greater New Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and Rev. Jerome Milton.

The largest organized MLK day march and celebration has been put on every year by Greater New Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and is a leading reason why MLK day is now an official city holiday and part of this cities history.

We thank Rev. Jerome Milton and the Greater New Pleasant Hill Baptist Church as well as those in the city who made this day an official city holiday and may it always remind us of the civil rights of every citizen no matter what race political view or religion they may hold to.

This day we not only mourn the assassination of a great black leader but we celebrate all that Martin Luther King Jr. did during his life and all that his legacy continues to do even after his death.
