The Tyler Suddenlink Saga Ends

May 14th, 2010

For those readers who’ve been following my Tyler Texas Suddenlink saga I would like to offer this afterward. (Sorry Donny, I just want to be sure to offer our readers some proper closure). I eventually contacted the Suddenlink rep who offered to assist me in negotiating a better deal on my cable and internet service. After pulling teeth to get to talk with someone with decision making authority, I appreciated that a representative of the company was taking an interest in my case. Fortunately, most of the conversations took place via e-mail as well, so as not to take up any more of my time. The central problem I had was that each person I spoke to seemed to tell me something different. (I must have talked to five or six different people). This seems to be symptomatic of dealing with a large company like Suddenlink, with so many separate departments and entities, that they tend to function like separate businesses. The trick is to find someone who can cut through all little bureaucracies and make a definitive decision. Admittedly this is much easier said than done.

After a couple of emails I was told that a local supervisor would contact me to discuss my service. I spoke to the local super briefly over the phone and we came to an agreement. First off she compensated me for my time. Secondly, she offered to look at my account and see whether or not I could be given the advanced tier like I was originally offered by the disembodied voice I spoke of in my last article. As it turned out she was unable to offer that package at my current rate, but she did offer me thirty days free trial. I thanked her but declined. I’d rather not get used to having the additional channels and then have to either let them go or start paying eleven dollars a month more for them. With my tendency toward procrastination, I’d probably just end up keeping them. So in the end I didn’t get everything I wanted but at least I received satisfaction.

What does the future hold for Suddenlink and me? Long term it’s difficult to say. Having found some people there who are willing to assist me has made it easier to consider sticking it out and acquiring additional services over the long haul. If my service continues as it is now, I may be a Suddenlink customer for a while. To review my story, look for the following titles in this order, on this site: Direct TV or Suddenlink, Which One, Hard to Decide Hmmm? and Suddenlink Internet Service in Tyler Texas. Suddenlink Internet Service in Tyler Texas

May 4th, 2010

Not long ago I wrote an article about my transition from Direct TV to Suddenlink Cable and Internet. It was a difficult and emotional decision, but one that required a practical solution rather than a comfortable one. At the time my article first appeared I was satisfied with the customer service I had received. While my television picture was not what I was used to, I was prepared to live with the difference for the time being… that is until receiving a call from the Suddenlink promotions department about a week into my new subscription. The magical disembodied voice on the other end of the cellular call offered me all of my hearts digital desires, five plus movie channels, digital HD boxes, a digital recorder, ten meg internet and an overall more fulfilling life, all for about the same price or only slightly higher than what I was currently paying. After an extensive interview, I settled, not on the full movie channel option, (my lifestyle does not allow for my becoming a professional shut-in), but instead on the advance tier option, (supposedly around two hundred channels if I understood the voice correctly), a new digital cable box and the ten meg internet. I was pleased beyond words. I had essentially added a service to my home while paying less money for it! My monthly rate had just gone from ninety one dollars, to eighty four dollars. The installer was scheduled to arrive on Tuesday morning with my digital box and all my missing channels. Little did I realize that in a few short days the corporate machine would put the skids on my new found enthusiasm.

Saturday morning while participating in an annual school fund raiser, I was interrupted by a call from my new television and internet provider, advising me that the wealth of services the voice had promised me a mere four days previous could not be provided, for reasons that were murky at best. “What? I don’t understand!” I protested. “Your office called me!” A long and painful series of negotiations and holding periods followed. At the end of the call most of my promised goodies were restored but only at a significant rate increase. My eighty four dollar a month rate had just gone up to ninety seven dollars! I determined then and there to carry my fight to the cable giant’s corporate office!

On my way home that afternoon, I called back. I informed the customer service rep that he would not be able to solve my problem and that he should immediately transfer my call to his supervisor. He evidently did not believe me because he first attempted to explain the charges on my account… unsuccessfully I should add. I finally broke in “Would you just transfer me please?!” When “Sarah” in the Minneapolis office finally picked up, I did my level best to suppress my frustration, and explained the situation for at least the fourth time. After looking at my account Sarah assured me that the local office had made a mistake and that I did indeed qualify for the eighty four dollar rate, with one proviso. I would have to scale back my internet from ten megs to eight. After consulting with my tech-y friends, (including Donny Eisenbach), I agreed to the small concession. When I arrived home from school I called the number Sarah had given me.

I have now had Tyler TX Suddenlink’s services for nearly three weeks. I have spent four hours on the phone with the company’s reps, have been through a series of rate changes and have yet make a single payment. When I called the customer service number one last time to request the change in my internet service, I was informed that the company was no longer offering the eight meg service. Furthermore, the representative informed me that I was due to receive my digital box Tuesday morning, and that my monthly bill would be ninety one dollars a month. I have come full circle. Like a character in some great epic I have fought my way through. Now I find myself asking, “What was it all for?” The fact is, no one knows, not the company’s local office, not the mysterious voice that promised me the world, not Sarah in Minneapolis and certainly not the Suddenlink corporate center. All I know is Tuesday afternoon I’m back to digital TV at the original rate of ninety one dollars a month.

Lake Country Airways Internet in Lindale Texas

April 16th, 2010

Lake Country Airways offers a great service for rural broadband internet for Mineola, Lindale, Grand Saline and maybe other places in this area. If you are outside the cable link area and can’t get DSL then this really is an option for you.  It is better than satellite (which we found, is expensive and not reliable in different weather conditions) and of course, it is MUCH better than dial up.

The key thing to be eligible for internet access with Lake Country Airways is your physical location. You must have line of sight to one of their towers. If you live on a hill, then you are probably fine – otherwise you will need to have access to an internet tower high enough to reach over the trees and hills. If you are not sure, they can check this for you. We did not have line of sight at our home and had to pay for them to build us a 40 foot metal tower in our backyard. It is visible but not unsightly. I was impressed at their speed and skill in getting the tower up and a little nervous watching them merrily climb up and down the tower to set us up with internet!

Lake Country Airways requires no monthly contract. The set up costs are around $300. Different internet speeds are available depending on what you want to pay. We have 1Mbps which usually costs $50 a month and is plenty fast enough for family internet use – including Skype and downloading large files like TV programs from the internet.

We have had internet service from LCA for nearly two years and have found it very reliable. The speed is consistently fast which is refreshing after our previous experience of enduring satellite connection up and downs. Since our original set up, we have had no issues that required a visit, but when we have called them on the phone their customer service seems to be efficient and polite.

Lake Country Airways is located in Mineola opposite Walmart and they can be contacted on 903 316 9586.

Choices Among Internet Providers in Tyler Texas

If you are like me and live out in the country you don’t have as many choices as someone living in the city limits of Tyler. There are a lot of things that I don’t have the privilege of doing without paying more money such as having a fast internet connection and going to the Tyler Public Library. Both of these things I will end up paying much more for than the average Tyler Texas joe living in the city limits. For those inside the city you can go with Suddenlink cable internet or AT&T highspeed internet service.

There are now even more internet options available for those in and outside the city of Tyler Texas than there has been for many years. There are these highspeed wireless PC cards offered by all the major cell phone carriers that allow you to plug a PC card into your laptop or desktop computer and have a fairly fast wireless internet service. The downside to the PC card wireless access is if you go over your usage limit you could be charged as high as 25 cents per megabyte. Those megabytes go pretty quick especially if you watch Youtube videos or download software.

Best Deal On Wireless Internet PC Card Service In Tyler

As far as cell phone wireless internet PC card service the best deal in Tyler is probably with Sprint although their coverage is spotty out in the country. The fastest and pretty good coverage in and outside the city of Tyler is with Verizon. Verizon will charge you 25 cents per megabyte if you go over your usage limit which is why I no longer use this company. Sprint only charges 5 cents per megabyte if you go over their limit however they also have an unlimited usage plan for a little more money.

Which Wireless Internet PC Card I Prefer The Most

AT&T’s wireless internet PC card goes by the name aircard and offers great speeds and coverage in the city of Tyler although the coverage gets a little spotty depending on where in the country you may be living in Smith County. Overall I prefer the speed of Verizon wireless internet PC card, the price and coverage of the Sprint wireless PC card, and enjoy the speed and coverage of AT&T’s aircard provided you use it within the city of Tyler and not out in the country.

Best Choice For Wireless Internet in Tyler Texas

For an even faster wireless internet outside the city limits of Tyler I recommend going with a wifi service that broadcasts from tower antennas. There is a company by the name of East Texas Wifi that I use and I love the service, low latency and internet speed they offer. There is another wireless internet company that competes with them called DCTexas Internet and they also boast some very fast speeds and low latency. Low latency simply means that any downloads you do will be very quick. If you were to compare the latency of a satellite internet service as you would get with Hughes net it would be a night and day difference. For instance, if you attempted to watch a funny youtube video with Hughes net you might as well queue it up and go eat a sandwich before it will be ready. With East Texas Wifi you will be able to watch the movie immediately almost as if you turned on TV to watch a show you like.

Stay Away From Hughes.net Satelite Internet Service!

WARNING!!! If you live in Tyler Texas or around the area avoid Hughes net at all costs! They will have you commit to a contract while wireless internet service companies like East Texas wifi will put you on a month to month plan. Once you are locked into the Hughes net contract you will quickly discover that the internet service is very slow and reminiscent of old dial up service back in the olden days. You will pay a high price for this lousy internet service too. It simply is not worth it and everyone I have spoken with about Hughesnet in Tyler have told me just how much they hate their internet service.

Best Internet Providers in Tyler Texas

December 10th, 2009

When trying to determine which internet provider is the best when it comes to price and speed it can be a little hard. You are dealing with very location specific speed issues and some neighborhoods will be worse than others. You basically have two choices, Cable internet, or DSL internet. There is now EVDO wireless internet cards but these have limitations when it comes to bandwidth so for the most part you want to stick with DSL or cable.

Your cable internet choice is Suddenlink internet which back in the early 90’s was called Tyler.net or Tyler internet. Cox bought them which later became Suddenlink. We have seen several customer reviews claiming that Suddenlink cable internet just isn’t very fast. Here are a couple positive and negative reviews to give you some idea what people are saying:

I use Suddenlink here in Tyler, TX, for my broadband provider, and I have never been disappointed. It is up 99.9% of the time, and the speeds are awesome. I am paying for 4Mbps, and on several Internet-based speed tests, I am always at about 8Mbps (those are download speeds, of course). Add to that the convenience of billing included with my cable statement, and Suddenlink broadband is the way to go!

Pretty sweet John. I paid for 8 mb dl speeds and get 4 to 5 on average! Instant and random disconnects, lag on online games. I recently cut my dl speed to 1 mb dl. I can still play video games with the same lag for a cheaper price! You rock severedlink!

  • For the video gamers out there you may not want to go with cable internet as you are basically sharing internet speeds with your neighbors. That coaxial cable that you see on the power lines outside runs to every house and the bandwidth is shared by everyone. When that bandwidth gets used at the same time by multiple neighbors that are all subscribed to suddenlink cable internet you may see a degredation in your internet speed. If it happens once it will probably be a regular occurence as people are creatures of habit. If you use the internet in the evening there is a good chance that everyone else in your neighborhood does too. This isn’t a good thing for those relying on cable internet.

DSL internet is provided by AT&T for the most part in Tyler Texas and offers you a dedicated line rather than something shared with your neighbors. You will not have to worry about sporadic slow internet speeds but will get exactly what you pay for every time. The times that cable internet beats DSL is when you are in a neighborhood where most of your neighbors are not subscribers to high speed internet but you are. This type of neighborhood is ideal because you will pay a little less with Suddenlink cable internet and will still have the fast speeds. Unfortunately there aren’t many neighborhoods like this anymore.

Our preferred choice is AT&T DSL high speed broadband internet. You will get a guaranteed internet speed and will not have to compete with your Tyler neighbors on when to use the internet for optimal speeds. This is by no means a hard and fast rule but just a little intelligent understanding of how the whole internet service thing works in Tyler Texas. Feel free to comment below if you agree or disagree.
