Redeeming Tattoos, A Christian Tattoo Parlor in Tyler

Tyler Texas Tattoos

Some subjects overwhelm me when I sit down to write about them. Either because I recognize it as a great subject that needs to be covered and I know nothing about it or I know a great deal about it and don’t know where to begin. Both of these can be really difficult and I often find that the writing process begins very slowly.

Then there are topics like the one I’m leading into, of which I know just enough to be dangerous, but the topic is so much fun, I look forward to getting started. Well, there is a new business in Tyler that will most likely cause a small stir. It’s called Redeeming Tattoos, and much of their art is of a religious nature. So yes they operate a Christian tattoo parlor.

Now I have to admit this is a very unconventional idea for Southern Baptist East Texas and I look forward to hearing the responses from the more conservative quarters of that community. In fact my personal take on this subject may surprise readers who know me. I’m not a collector of tattoos, although I have a number of close friends who are. I’m not covered ink, although I’m not a stranger to the tattoo parlor either. I’ve watched a few artists work, and I find the process and artistry quite interesting.

In recent years the culture around tattooing has certainly changed. It’s not just the bikers and skaters who wear them anymore. I’ve known teachers, pastors and corporate bosses who wore them albeit often discreetly hidden beneath their clothes. I am myself a practicing Christian, and while I don’t endorse the art form as being for everyone, neither do I believe it to be a mortal sin. Furthermore I find nothing in Scripture where it is stipulated as such.

The closest reference I find is the Biblical mandate that we (Jews and Christians) are not to “mark yourselves for the dead,” meaning that we are not to accept tattoos as a function of occult worship or practice, something common in the non Judeo- Christian religions. Obviously the concern there is less with the actual ink and more with the association with paganism. The argument I hear most often is “But, my body is a temple!” To which a friend of mine responded, “And is a temple not full of ornate carvings and works of art?”

The fact is this argument would carry more weight if it was not so often used by individuals who were in excess of two hundred fifty pounds and subsist almost exclusively on a diet of Doritos, red meat and Dr. Pepper, (not that I’m against any of those things in moderation). The fact is, we all have our vices, the trick is to keep them to a minimum, and enjoy them in manageable doses.

As best as I can tell, Redeeming Tattoos is a clean reputable shop, with solid artists, who’ve been practicing their art for quite some time, and a satisfied client list. Part of their purpose is to share their faith with their customers. As Christians we need to strive for excellence in whatever our field. The folks at Redeeming Tattoos are, by all accounts doing just that.

A new shop, they are located at 12982 State Hwy 31 W. in Tyler. Were I in the market for a tat, I would much sooner visit them than most of the other seedier businesses in town. For more information, or to see samples of their work, they can be found on facebook at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Tyler-TX/Redeeming-Tattoos/112980208736318. To make a reservation they can be reached by phone at (903)360-4863.

Freedom Automotive and Muffler of Tyler, Inc.

January 19th, 2010

Freedom Automotive & Muffler of Tyler, Inc. is located on Highway 64 West in Tyler, TX almost half-way between Loop 323 and the Tyler Pounds Airport. The company has been a Better Business Bureau Accredited business since April 20th, 2006. The Better Business Bureau has not processed a single negative complaint on this company in at least thirty-six months.

Their main focus and expertise is in muffler and exhaust installs and repairs, but they are capable of all automotive repair and installation.

I first went to Freedom Automotive & Muffler because I had close friends who recommended them to me as a mechanic shop that was honest and affordable. I’ve had several friends who have used them with good results. I will also be sending my close friends and family to them in the future for any type of car work.

The reason I needed a mechanic was that my car was having minor electrical problems. The lights would only go to high beams or off. I couldn’t very well drive around with no lights or only brights, but I didn’t want to pay for work on my high mileage car. I had been planning to sell my car and purchase another used car, but I had to leave for a family visit in New England for the Thanksgiving holiday. I went into Freedom Automotive and was met by the co-owner Mrs. Hayes. She was so incredibly helpful and considerate. She had the guys look at it and then made some calls to find the multi-switch that I needed. She called her different auto suppliers and found out that the part was not a normally stocked item and was therefore going to cost over two hundred dollars. The cool thing was that she cared that it was expensive to me. Even though she could do nothing about the cost, it earned my business.
I had to leave for a cross country road trip within less than a week, so I decided to get it fixed and try to sell it very quickly. I did some looking at used cars and had a potential, but I checked with Jep Hayes at Freedom Automotive. He was very helpful. I asked if the car would be worth keeping. He looked at my car and told me that it was a good car and would easily run another fifty thousand or more miles with a new timing belt. He said that he personally drove all of his cars into the ground, because it worked out to be cheaper. He also helped me see that when buying a used car you are buying the previous owner’s mistakes and something they are wanting to be rid of which may turn out to need tons of repairs.

I talked with my wife and we decided this was probably the best decision. So we had them install a timing belt and do a couple of other things. Then I paid another company a little to install new speakers, and the results were amazing. It was like we had a new car. Only we spent about three thousand dollars less than we would have and avoided debt. The car has been running great for a few months now. He even fixed an almost deafening squeal that had been “fixed” by other mechanics about seven or eight times. The car hasn’t squealed since.

This company earned my trust by being honest and helpful. They didn’t try to convince me to replace parts that didn’t need it. I went to them with the repairs I wanted done and they found the cheapest parts they could and did the work quicker than I could believe. Even though they had other vehicles they were working on, they took my pressing time need into account and finished the job early before my trip. I was more than pleased with their service and work ethic and even their friendly advice.

Bethesda Health Clinic

January 9th, 2010

Bethesda Health Clinic has been invaluable to me. This clinic offers incredibly discounted medical service to people in Smith County who are working but are uninsured. They serve an average of 10,000 patients each year with basic out patient health services. They have expanded in their abilities and equipment to offer dental care, colonoscopy and endoscopy procedures, and have most recently begun a program for treating diabetics in which they maintain regular communication with the patients.

At this time our nation is in uproar about solving the medical needs of our uninsured citizens. People are losing jobs. Meanwhile, the costs of health care have not gone down. People are worried that with the state of the economy it’s going to be even more difficult to be taken care of.  Tyler, TX is no exception to this. There is a huge need for the residents of Smith County to have health care. There are government run options for those in the poverty bracket, but what about the rest of us? And if we are in the poverty bracket, do we really want government run health services? It didn’t take living in Tyler very long to hear the answer. Bethesda offers the most reasonable solution I’ve seen or heard of to these needs.

I am a volunteer missionary living in Tyler. When I came down with the worst sore throat I’d ever had, some close friends and coworkers pointed me to Bethesda Health Clinic in downtown Tyler. I made a phone call to ask how to begin. The receptionist was kind and quick to help me figure out what I would need to bring in. I needed some basic identification documents and proof of employment. I went in to apply for the program and was pleasantly surprised. The waiting room did not look like most charitable health clinics I’ve been to. The furniture was nice. The walls were painted freshly with cheerful colors. There were attractive paintings instead of the usual depressing posters.

What made the biggest impression on me was how incredibly nice the workers were. From the receptionist to the doctors, I was blown away. They treated me like an equal instead of a beggar. They looked me in the eyes and smiled with genuine interest in my situation. The doctor discovered that I had strep throat and was able to give me an antibiotic for free from samples they had on hand. When I checked out I was amazed to find that the total cost for my visit was fifteen dollars.

The clinic was thought up by a physician in 1999 who shared her vision to the pastor of the First Baptist Church of Tyler. The pastor, Dr. Michael Massar, took the vision to his church staff and members and with in just a few years the clinic was up and running. They first opened their doors on September 6, 2003. After four months they had already treated 372 patients. Bethesda is run by a staff of 750 volunteers. There are 180 doctors, 140 nurses and hundreds more who help with the administrative, maintenance and clerical jobs. The patients are about 40 percent Hispanic, 40 percent Caucasian, 19 percent African American with jobs ranging from volunteer missionaries like me to jobs with the Tyler Independent School District. In short, this operation is nothing short of amazing.

Bethesda Health Clinic is setting an example of a better solution to our nation’s health care needs. People with good hearts who want to serve and pour out their lives for the less fortunate will always produce a better service than a government could offer.
