Green Acres Baptist Church in Tyler

January 18th, 2010

Green Acres Baptist Church is located at 1607 Troup Hwy, Tyler, Texas 75701. Green Acres Baptist Church mission statement is that they exist to exalt God’s greatness and spread the word to God’s world making sure people are fully ready to share God’s love through Jesus Christ our Lord. Everything they do is to bring people to Christ. My family has been members of this church as long as I can remember. At first I did not like it because I judged the people in the church according to my Sunday school class members and what was happening there. I automatically assumed that the whole congregation must be the same. With that in mind, I was a 14 year old girl trying to fit in somewhere and Green Acres seemed too rich and too big to me. I felt ashamed to be there because we had very little money. Therefore, I felt like I did not fit in because I was not driving the right car or wearing the name brand clothes. For that reason I left the church when I was old enough to drive and choose somewhere else to worship.

Don’t worry the story does not end like this, teenage years are hard anyway for anybody too young to really know what is going on and peer pressure is strong for girls to want to fit in somewhere cool. When I became an adult, I went back to Green Acres and realized that I had made some ugly judgments upon the church based on my teenage years. Not very fair I know but like I said I have long changed my mind about what I thought in my younger years. I will be honest, too big of a place for me. Prefer smaller groups of people nothing wrong with larger ones…just feel more comfortable in something not as big.

Pastor Dyke’s is a great teacher. You can tell he loves God and wants to reach the world for His name sake There are so many opportunities they offer probably too many to list. My family has been uniquely bless in so many ways by the members there. Anytime we called and needed help ….they were always ready to reach out to those in need. Need counseling…they have it; lacking in food, clothing or other necessities, Green Acres is fully equipped to help you and love to reach out and help the community and share the love of Jesus.

Your marriage on the rocks…you can go to a 10-12 weeks Seminar that Cindy Dykes is holding for couples that are engaged, dating or married and want to learn more about how to relate to one another. I went to the program myself and loved it. Anything you learn you can apply to your life and help you become a better person. The library is big and offers movies, books and Cd’s that you can rent at no cost. You don’t have to rent…you can also buy it if you would like to keep it. There is a children’s area that is very safe, our daughter loved being there and playing with the other babies. The personnel that volunteered to watch the children were very nice and you could tell they loved being there and spending time with them. Everybody is welcome no matter the race, sex, or denomination. Tons of exciting stuff for your children to do. Don’t think you have to worry about not having enough to do. Maybe the opposite, too much fun things to do.

If you’re looking for a place to join or visit and don’t mind a big place, then you may have found the congregation you have been looking for. Refrain from making the same mistake as I did….by judging a place before you know more about it. Go visit and see for yourself if Green Acres Baptist Church is the Tyler TX church congregation for you and your family.

Green Acres Bowl

Green Acres Bowl

2311 E SE Loop 323
Tyler
TX 75701
903 561 2911

Opening times 8.30 am until 11pm, closes later at the weekends

After having some fun on the Nintendo Wii over Christmas we thought we should take our kids and try out some REAL bowling.
We wanted a family friendly place that wasn’t smoky or seedy and chose Green Acres Bowl. We went on a Thursday morning.

My first impressions were that this place had seen better days – quite a few years ago. I wonder, has bowling gone out of date? It is certainly a long time since I have gone bowling with friends.

When we arrived we were greeted by a friendly, helpful lady who gave us all the information we needed. She quickly found all of us the special shoes you need to wear and gave us some instructions and advice for the children. They were excited to get going! We decided to have 2 lanes so we didn’t have to wait too long between goes. In the day time it isn’t busy and as you pay per person per game it is fine to do that.

The balls were rather too heavy for our 5 year old but we had the sides up which made us all look as if we bowled like pros – it was such fun.

As it is quiet in the mornings the snack bar wasn’t open which was a shame but we couldn’t complain as the price was very reasonable for the games as it was obviously ‘off peak.’ We paid just a dollar for the shoe hire and $1.75 per person per game. Chik-Fil-A is just a short drive away and we headed there afterwards for lunch.

The facilities at the Green Acres Bowl are a bit dated, but who cares! If you are out for a laugh with a group of friends then you won’t mind a bit. It probably isn’t something we will do on a regular basis but I’m sure it won’t be the last time we visit the bowl this year.

Usual prices: $3 per game $2.50 shoe hire
Tues and Thurs 10-4pm $1.75 game $1 shoe hire
Sunday and Weds – Rent a lane as a group and have pizza for $35
Party package $9 per child.

Oh and if you catch the bowling bug you can join an adult or youth league.

Tyler Green Acres Bowling

January 8th, 2010

Tyler Green Acres Bowling located in the Tyler Texas area is lots of fun and fairly cheap. If you are looking for something fun and clean to do with your friends, I would strongly encourage you to try bowling.

I went there with some of my friends. The shoes only cost a couple of dollars and the game was $2.00 per game. Besides being cheap, it is very entertaining and lots of fun. Also it is a clean, environment, smoke free.

In addition to bowling there are also lots of other games you can play if you don’t like bowling.

There is a small area for food at reasonable prices and the taste is not bad. Also for a bonus there is free coffee. You can’t beat that. For those who would like to have a drink while they play a game there is a small bar area where you can order some drinks. Of course, I think it might impair your game so it’s probably better not to. But like I said that is available for those who like to mix the two together.

Next time you are thinking of something fun to do, but do not have lots of money to spend, gather some of your friends together and go to Tyler Green Acres Bowing. You won’t be disappointed, just thrilled.

In addition to the fun of bowling it will be pretty comical, watching your friends bowl. If you are the type of person that likes to make new friends, there are a lot of other people there that are bowling. You never know who you might meet. You just might make a new friend, while you are at it. And if you don’t have money for that, it never costs anything to go watch your friends and hang out. It beats being alone on a Friday or Saturday night.

Mexican/Seafood do I dare?

January 1st, 2010

With Tyler being overrun with restaurants and a large number of them being mexican restaurants, it is real easy to overlook a restaurant like the Cancun Cafe. If you are in the mood for mexican food and are bored with the multiple Lugars, it might be time to try something with a little kick. Cancun Cafe is located off of the loop in Tyler across from the Green Acres Bowling Alley. Without the bright lights of Mercados it can be easy to overlook but this is one dining spot in Tyler you don’t want to miss.

Cancun Cafe has quality mexican food and surprisingly enough I’ve found that they also have a large quantity of delicious seafood dishes, and no this isn’t fish tacos or a trout with a jalepeno stuffed down its throat, this is quality seafood dishes with a kick, coupled with great mexican food. The signature dish that I have to suggest that everyone try at least once is their fajitas and snowcrab. I found as odd as this sounds it is one of the tastiest combos I’ve ever tried.

The service is decent although many people have had problems with food arriving late. Since this is not one of the more popular mexican restaurants like On the Border or Mercados, you will not find the crowds you will find packed out the doors as is frequently the case at those places, allowing you to be seated almost immediately. The atmosphere is like that of most of the mexican restaurants in Tyler and is roomy enough to cater to nearly all of your party needs. This is a restaurant that hosts events like karaoke night so if you don’t mind the howling that comes with these events it can be a good night out on the town.

Prices are pretty good, with several dishes under $10, and quantities especially in the fajitas and snowcrab are very generous. When ordering a dish like that you might consider taking a bag to go because I’ve found they often serve more than one can eat. So next time you are eating out, try something new like the Cancun Cafe, as long as you don’t mind the occasional wait for your meal it’ll definately be worth your while.
