Back to Bio-life Plasma Center in Tyler

Bio-Life Plasma Services

It’s been around a year since I last “donated” plasma at Bio-life Plasma Services in Tyler. Of course the term donate is actually incorrect. As a private school teacher my summer budget can be tight, so another fifty dollars a week can mean the difference between making my bills and having my water turned off. I wrote one other time about my experience with Bio-life which has been largely positive. I went for the better part of a year, twice a week nearly every week before eventually slowing down. My attendance gradually became less regular due largely to lack of time. For a while return had diminished as well, to the point that it was no longer really worth my time and gas money to make the trip to that side of town. I will admit as well that I grew tired of being poked and prodded every couple of days. I now have small but permanent scars inside my elbows due to my regular attendance.

Most anyone can donate provided they’re over the age of eighteen and weight at least one hundred ten pounds. There’s actually quite a long list of screening questions donors are required to answer each time they visit the center, but most people should have no major problems getting the ok. This makes it a really viable way for college students who live on ramen noodles and Dr. Pepper, to make a little extra cash. But of course the plasma donation isn’t entirely about making a few extra dollars for the donor. All plasma collected by the center is used in all sorts of medical research. Numerous therapies also require blood plasma, particularly for hemophilia and other immune disorders. So it actually is a really good cause.

One other positive note about Bio-life in Tyler; I recognized much of the staff as being there last year. For me this was good to know. I’ve been stuck by new or inexperienced staff members just learning the ropes before, and it often makes for a long afternoon. I realize they have to start somewhere, but it’s nice to know the center has retained an experienced staff. The New Mommy and Me

September 19th, 2010

The consignment store Mommy and Me in Tyler Texas has moved to a new location. Before they moved their store was really small and was unable to keep all the clothes organize in the store, and many times had to set up a lot of their clothes outside. Although they had their boy’s clothes separated from their girl’s clothes. It was hard to find what you were looking for. In the old location, Mommy and Me was tucked on the side of a building that you could not really see it from the road, it was easy to drive right past it.

The new location (which was formally California Girl) makes the store easier to find. Even though the location have moved and the store is larger, it has not changed the clothes they sale. When you are shopping at Mommy and Me you really have to make sure there are not any stains or rips in the clothes. I understand that they clothes that they sale are all used clothes and are resold at their store, but I think that they should have a smaller selection of clothing that are in better shape. It is hard to dig through clothes that are all stained to find the one outfit that is the right size and clean.

It is harder to find good clothes for infants, because most of the clothes are not in very good shape, but they are sold at great prices. Their little boy’s selection is really small most of the time. Their selections do vary so you can always find something new when you return. Mommy and Me does have a better selection for girls from sizes 18months-3T (which is great for me since I shop for those sizes).

Selling your used clothes at a consignment store is a great way to put a little extra cash in your pocket especially because kids grow so fast and only wear one size for a few months. The people that work and own Mommy and Me are great to work with and are really nice.

I think that it is worth going to Mommy and Me. Even though you have to dig to find what you are looking for, it is possible for you to find something in good shape for a great price. Shopping here is sort of a like a treasure hunt, which can be fun but frustrating at the same time.

BioLife Plasma Services in Tyler

January 8th, 2010

As someone who knows what it is like to be a struggling college student, I thought I would suggest what may seem to some like a somewhat extreme method of making a little extra cash each week. Now, I know what you’re probably thinking, so let me assure you that it is perfectly legal, and there’s no need to remove any clothing. I’m referring to “donating” plasma at Biolife Plasma Services in Tyler.

What exactly is Blood Plasma?

Blood plasma is the yellowish fluid mixed into the blood. It’s the portion which contains the blood’s cells and is easily replaced after a couple of meals. During the donation process, blood is extracted from the donor, the plasma is separated, and the remainder of the blood is returned to the patient’s blood stream. The plasma is then used for medical research as well as the manufacture of treatments for various forms of disease. What should I expect from the donation process?

In order to become a donor, an investment of about three hours is required. You’ll want to make an appointment, as the Tyler Texas plasma center is always full of people. Don’t just show up expecting to give, and get paid an hour later. When you make an appointment the staff will set up your account and give you a brief physical. This is not a complete physical but consists mostly of a blood pressure test, and standing on a scale. There is also an extensive series of questions regarding medical and sexual history. Personal privacy and dignity is protected by the fact that after the initial visit the questions are answered via touch screen computer. Contrary to urban legend, having a tattoo or two does not disqualify you from donating, provided any tats or piercings are at least four months old.

After the initial visit the process usually takes around an hour and fifteen minutes. Each visit the donor is required to answer the questionnaire, weigh in, have his or her finger pricked, and blood pressure and temperature tested. Once this short ritual is completed the donor is directed to a bed where the I.V. is inserted. Don’t worry after a couple of minutes you’ll completely forget it’s there. I should also say a word about a pre-donation meal. It is very important to eat prior to donating. Once, I neglected to eat due to a busy morning and still gave. It was a most unpleasant experience. The rule, as I understand it, is not to wait longer than three, or three and a half hours after eating to give blood. Failure to heed this advice results in nausea and dizziness.

What are the rewards of donating plasma?

On one hand I am not going to say that the process is always pleasant, particularly if you’re squeamish, but it’s not a terrible one either. There is generally little discomfort, and for an hour of reading time, the pay is pretty good. The staff there is really great. They are competent, helpful and friendly. Giving blood twice a week you can expect to make from two hundred to around three hundred five dollars a month. Twice a week is the maximum donors are allowed to give, and visits cannot add up to three in a seven day span. Even after the initial visit you’ll have to continue making appointments, which can be done on line. Beyond the immediate financial benefit, you can be assured that the sacrifice is for a worthy cause. Tyler’s Biolife Plasma Services is located at 1827 W. Gentry Tyler Texas.
