On South Broadway and Rice in Tyler, TX there rests a Starbucks. I love Starbucks. I’m not really sure why, but I do, I follow suit with most everyone else. And usually everyone is nice and inviting. No problems, easy come and go visit. But there was one occasion this past Halloween that didn’t meet my expectations. My friends and I had decided to dress up as the 12 disciples and Jesus and pose as the Last Supper painting that Da Vinci painted. We had a table, a huge picture frame and all were dressed for the part. It was quite wonderful and everyone thought it was great. WE have a reputation for doing things lavishly.

The year before we had dressed up as Noah’s Ark. 22 people, just as many different animals and HUGE cardboard Ark, painted and cut out. We had made up a song and everything. The year before that we were the nativity scene. Anyways… So here we are as The Last Supper. I guess the weekend before that part of out group had been at this Starbucks doing a pumpkin carving contest and everyone was dressed in costume. It was quite wonderful and fun. So these same friends thought it would be great to visit them again in our group costume.

Well… we drove up, got out of our cars, I must admit this might have looked scary with three cars pulling up and 14 Jesus looking people with boxes (our table) and a huge picture frame walking toward the door. But as we approached someone from the store met us at the door and told us we couldn’t come in, that we couldn’t bring boxes into the building. We were so confused because it was so random and they had just had a huge costume party basically so what was different about today? She kept saying it was company policy, no boxes could be brought in. All we could do was turn around and leave, we were so confused.

Well there is another Starbucks location on the way home and we had already told our friends working there that we would come in to show them our costume. So we headed over there. We went in, planted our selves in front of the registers and sang our song and everyone clapped and cheered. They loved it, customers and all. We asked them if there was such a rule as the other store so adamantly proclaimed but they had no idea about it, so we laughed it off.

I must say that every time I’ve been in the first location since I’ve had a guilty a conscience. I haven’t even done anything wrong, but I feel like they will make up another excuse to kick me out or something. Even though I know that isn’t true. The second Starbucks remains my favorite, they are the most easy going.

Unfortunately next year I’m not going to be living here anymore and I won’t be able to be in another group costume. I’m a bit sad about that. But I can’t wait to see the pictures! We rock Tyler.

The animals and the scenery around them really made me feel like I was in Africa or some far off land. Adults and children are sure to love the Brookshires Wildlife Museum because of all the real stuffed animals and antlers.

Taco Bell on Highway 31 and Loop 323 in Tyler, TX

January 19th, 2010

Of all fast food chains available in the United States, I prefer Taco Bell, and if you found this by searching for Taco Bell, then I assume you also love the chain. In Tyler, there aren’t a lot of non-burger fast food restaurants. They exist, but for a city our size, there seem to be relatively few.

This Taco Bell branch is located at the corner of Highway 31 and Loop 323. It shares a parking lot with Blockbuster Video which together make a great combination for a lazy evening. Also in the same shopping center are a Burger King, a Little Caesar’s Pizza, a Family Dollar, and interesting enough a Mexican grocery market which has a real taqueria (taco restaurant). I’ve tasted real Mexican tacos. They are amazing. In fact, Tyler offers several locations that will sell you tacos as close to authentic as possible this far North. Yet, I so often find myself pulling into this Taco Bell.

What makes it special? Well, the location has nothing to offer in the visual realm. The parking lot is as depressing as a parking lot can be. It’s as huge as you would need for a mall or a Wal-Mart and so it is rarely even close to fully occupied. This allows for making the potholes visible. Taco Bell itself feels very scrunched against the corner of the two busy roads. The drive through tends to make me claustrophobic like driving on an interstate that is under construction. It is not very wide. It curves and does not allow for exiting it once you’ve committed. I sometimes wonder what I’d do if I was in line and had an emergency. I guess I’d have to attempt hopping the six inch curb.

The things that are special about this Taco Bell in Tyler are the food, of course, and the employees. I have become a bit of an expert on Taco Bell dining around the United States. This is purely from eating at so many of them and hanging out with people at them. Only once have I been disappointed by this Taco Bell’s food, and it was because I made the number one fast food ordering mistake. I tried to go healthy. I ordered some sort of chicken and rice burrito that was close to disgusting. I didn’t spit it out, but I didn’t smile either. That was such an obvious mistake on my part that I could never hold it against the restaurant.

This Taco Bell has been very consistent with their food production. The burritos and tacos always come out as expected. They look close enough to the enhanced commercial examples and consistently taste exactly as I want them too. The “grilled stuffed burrito” is an item that is so often messed up by Taco Bells. When I’ve ordered them at other locations they’ve been dry and overcooked. One common mistake with it is overstuffing it with the rice which needs to be there but not noticed. This location does it right every time. I was even able to convert my wife from a chicken sandwich only customer to being a burrito fan with this branch’s consistently wonderful “grilled stuffed burritos”.

The other cool thing is their employees. I know that fast food doesn’t pay well, and that the employee turnover rate is pretty high. It should be hard to keep good workers. And though I can’t say for certain that they have been the same employees, I can say that the service has stayed the same. They must have a manager who understands customer service. When I pull up to the window, the worker may appear rough or unfriendly, but they inevitably smile at me and offer some small talk. One employee in particular actually had me laughing at loud. It really made the difference in where I will choose to take my eating business.

One last thought to encourage you to check them out…their soda is perfectly mixed. They are always strong with the initial burn that a good soda should offer, and the syrup mix has never been off when I ordered. They also have really good small ice and the really thin straws that make for a nice drinking experience. Give this slightly unattractive location a shot. You might become a regular like me.

Tyler Sam’s Club

January 16th, 2010

Sam’s Club is located in Tyler, Texas off Loop 323 West going towards Mercado’s Mexican Restaurant. I love going to Sam’s Club because you can buy things in bulk which usually means you get the item cheaper and a larger quantity. Besides that my family and I often stop on Sunday after church services and shop around for the things we need for that week. They always have samples on each end cap. I know when we go there I won’t leave starving…because after sampling all the food you have a pretty good snack.

Once I went to Sam’s and they were doing a picture promotion, where they give you a family picture for free, but you would have to buy the rest of the pictures if you want the whole packet. The initial cost was $15 dollars to apply for the shoot. I thought it was worth it, even if you could not afford to buy any of the other pictures that they offered…because I will be truthful…the packages they offered are expensive around $100 for several picture. For those who do not have a problem paying that much, it may be well worth the package price. The experience alone was awesome.

Sam’s has a great food service area. That is another reason I like to go there. They serve some pretty good pizza….or so I have heard from my friends. I am not a pizza lover, but I do trust my friends when they say that the pizza is good there. When you pick up a pizza….a good movie is good to have. I love to look around at the selections that they have for a very reasonable price.

In order to shop at Sam’s…you have to be a member and have a membership card to go in and purchase things. I think it is $30 dollars a year for a card and if you can not afford the card, find someone who has a card and go in with them to check out Sam’s Club’s prices for yourself. You will probably fall in love with it just like I did. They truly have great prices and good quality.

Outside the main store….they have a gas station where you can get gas cheaper if you are a member. You get $.03 taken off of each gal of gas if you use your membership card.

The best I can do is tell you my experience at Sam’s so far and hope you will want to go there for yourself.

Tyler Barnes and Noble

January 13th, 2010

Tyler Barnes and Noble is a place where you can go and find the book you are looking for. They have all kinds of books on all kinds of topics. I go to Barnes and Nobles sometimes with my friends and I love to hang out and look around at the books they have. They don’t mind if you pick a seat and read a book or so. They make it so that you can feel right at home if you decide to read there.

They also have a place where they have magazines anywhere from those on fashion, people, cars, your home, food and other types of topics. They also have a selection for your children and they have it set up to where if you want to sit down and read to your child you can.

Inside the Tyler Barnes and Noble they also have a Starbucks and you know that everyone likes a good cup of coffee while you are reading a good book. If you don’t like looking around for a book or don’t feel like reading you can choose to hang out with your friends and have a cup of coffee and catch up on old times.

Barnes and Noble book store often has sales so you can find books there for a reasonable price especially if using your Barnes and Nobles customer card. If you don’t have the money to buy the book then you can just go and read while you are there. I am sure they won’t care if you hang out, have a cup of coffee and read a book without purchasing it. I have done this on numerous occasions although they know you will take one or two home eventually and this is why this type of setup works.
