Accelerated Christian Education

August 18th, 2010

ACE Accelerated Christian EducationAs a teacher for going on twelve years now, much of my writing focus for Tyler TX Directory has to do with that subject. It’s just what I know so naturally, it’s a topic that is often in the forefront of my mind. Recently I discovered that there is a new private school opening in our area, but I will refrain from mentioning it by name as I cannot endorse the curriculum the school is using. I feel I must be careful about critiquing this form of education because I realize that it’s very popular in religious circles.

For going on forty years now Accelerated Christian Education (ACE) has been a force in American Christian Education. In a time when Americans were waking up to the need for private religious schools, the publisher offered a curriculum that was easy to apply, not labor intensive for either students or parents, and required very little faculty or staff to implement. The timing couldn’t have been better, as church schools began to spring up around the country supplied by ACE.

In 1977 another curriculum company started. It borrowed the same methodology and (I can only presume) drew from ACE’s rich target market. Honestly I suspect the number of schools using it has dropped off a bit in recent years, but I may be wrong. The system worked essentially like this; the classrooms were quiet and nontraditional. Each student had his or her own work space or cubicle. The students set goals for themselves and in each subject and worked to complete those goals. If they finished early they could either press on in order to “get ahead,” or they could take a break. Each subject had its own series of booklets, called Paces or Lifepacs depending on the curriculum. At the end of each was a test. Tests and questions are often graded by the student, but (I assume) would also be corrected by the teacher present. The system allowed the student to work at the pace they chose, or necessary to “master” or memorize the material. As an elementary student I was briefly enrolled in an Alpha Omega school before my parents wisely withdrew me.

Of the two, the ACE program appears more popular with most homeschoolers. In practice they are virtually identical, if not in content. Eventually I was enrolled in a school with a more classical approach, but as a student I pined for the days when I could work at my own pace, (which meant painfully slow). I also lost a year (or something like that) due to the fact that I didn’t learn anything. My new classical private school came like a slap. I was back in a world that pushed me, required me to learn, and that didn’t allow me list away at my desk passively reading through a workbook. My new school taught me to think!

And it is actually the methodology that I’m taking issue with. I would probably find much to debate in the programs content and theology as well, but there is no perfect curriculum in that regard. Our preferences generally tend to depend on our denomination. But (in my opinion), the approach to education offered by these program is far too rote. As an educator it is my job to teach my students reason critically. The methods mentioned above do talk a lot about God, but they fail to reason with him. Plugging a student into a cubby hole with a Pace or a Lifepac while an “instructor” walks around the room is not helping them to think. In my experience these systems merely teach the student to perform the minimum requirements necessary to complete a given task. There is no excellence. There is no discussion. There is no mentoring.

The ACE literature suggests that most curriculums focus on how to teach, but should focus on how to learn. However learning is itself a skill to be learned. This brings us back to the original question of how best to teach. Another problem I have with this model is that it greatly devalues the role of the teacher, and quite frankly the parent by proxy. Students merely read from the booklet and plug their answers into the blanks. Yes as a parent or teacher, you may be sitting next to your child, but he or she is not learning from the wisdom or experience that you have to offer, he’s learning from his Lifepac. The fact is the parent / teacher should be irreplaceable in the classroom. Good teachers guide the students through a subject far more complicated than what booklet can present. And let’s face it many or most students would rather not be in school in the first place. The teacher’s role is partially to inspire in their students a love of learning, to get more out of them than they realized they could do, or to introduce them to new concepts they never expected to understand.

I realize the each student is unique, and not everyone has the opportunity to benefit from the education my brothers and I did. Some students (like my sister in law) have grown up in an ACE or Alpha Omega program and come out with a tremendous education. But I would suggest that those were students who would have prospered in nearly any environment because they are excellent students who love learning. I’d venture to guess that most are more like me. I was more inspired to chase my classmates on the playground with a sharp stick in some mock battle than sit quietly in my cubby filling in blanks.

I can appreciate the goal of these publishers. It is not my desire to impugn the religious nature of their mission, only to examine their methods. WalMart Confusion

August 2nd, 2010

When I walk into Tyler’s Wal-Mart, on the corner of the Loop and highway 64, I am greeted by a group of strange men just hanging out by the entrance. I get sick of these groups of guys that shout at woman to get their numbers. I can not believe girls would actually give these guys their numbers.

As I walk through the dirty store that always seems like the floor is sticky, I get run into a bunch of little kids running through the store with no parents in sight. I get frustrated and walk down to get a tube of toothpaste. As I grab a tube of tooth paste, a shirt is stuffed behind it. I go to get a few groceries and grab something to eat at the Deli.

Some woman sell barbeque chicken chunks with flies flying all around. Some chicken falls on the greasy dirty counter and they just grabbed it up and threw it back in the container with all the other food. I was really grossed out and decided not to eat there. There is a McDonalds connected to this Wal-Mart. I don’t think I would ever eat there.

It always looks really dirty and really greasy. This Wal-Mart is known to be very dangerous and be very careful if you go there, especially at night, when really strange people can not find a better place to hang out at 11:00 at night.

It seems like some of the most stuck up people drive around the Wal-Mart off of Broadway. I always get cut off while walking into the store. One time a car was waiting for me to load my bags of groceries into the car put my two babies into the car seats and buckle them in and put my cart away, just so they could get my spot.

I was trying to hurry to be nice and they kept honking and when I looked up at the driver I noticed that they were signaling for me to hurry up. Excuse me? They should just go find another place. Oh, and by the way, please do not park in the pregnancy parking unless you are pregnant.

So I hate going there because of all the rude people that shop there. But there isn’t any other Wal-Mart that is so convenient. I can just go right across the street to Target, or stay in the same parking lot and enjoy a great burger at Whataburger. The store inside is a lot cleaner than the Wal-Mart I formally talked of, but it always is so crowded.

Every time I go to check out it seems like they have about twenty lanes and maybe five are open. So there will be at least ten people in front of you with their baskets over flowing with stuff. So Wal-Mart, open a few more check-outs, will you?

My very favorite Wal-Mart in Tyler is the newest one on Troop Highway. It is the furthest for me but I think it is worth the drive. It is the largest Wal-Mart in Tyler and always the most orderly. The food always seems so much cleaner and even the people are nicer. The parking lot is larger so people can find their own parking space and don’t have to be so rude to park.

They have great furniture for babies. It is easy to register here because everything so organized compared to the other ones. The people are nicer because they don’t feel cramped into and over crowded store with rude strangers. The greeter is even nicer. Which I think greeters are so funny. What a great job. They are called “greeters” but honestly,  how often do they really greet you. Its like security. Security from all those strange pathetic people that shop lift. But that is off the point I am trying to make.

Troop Wal-Mart greeters actually tell people hello. But I don’t think they deal with as much shop lifting as the Wal-Mart off of highway 64. There is always police there. So if you need to go to Wal-Mart go to Troop, even if it is out of the way. They always seem to have more lanes open so it takes a lot less time to come in and get out.

I’m not the biggest fan of Wal-Mart, not like I use to be. But it is the one stop for all your needs and the prices are amazing. I can ever leave the store with out first checking out the five dollar movie rack, or the three dollar sales in the baby clothes section. Wal-Mart has a policy that they will not be under sold, so you are sure to find what you need or want at a  great price.

You will find everything for every room in your house and for your car. If you need a new bed spread or a new rug, if you need new furniture or television, you will always find it at Wal-Mart. Keep your eyes open for the seasonal selection at great prices and when it starts to becomes out of season look for amazing sales.

Have fun shopping with your kids in their toys section, I always have to take a walk down the pink aisle just to see what is new and what is on sale. So shop Wal-Mart to find off-brand and brand names at a great price, “always”.

S.S.T. School of Summer Training

January 12th, 2010

S.S.T. stands for School of Summer Training and is a program that is available through YWAM Texas located in Lindale, Texas near Tyler TX. This is a program where teens can go and have a lot of fun while learning about God. It is a summer program and it’s a couple of weeks long. You have one week sessions of classes and lots of fun and the other week you go on an outreach to Mexico usually.

It is an excellent way to spend your summer and make sure your children are in a good environment and are learning good moral things. S.S.T. concentrates on teaching the children how to have a relationship with God and make decisions based on God’s word and not just their emotions. It is also an opportunity for them to find new friends that have similar goals in life and love God and are trying to figure out what His will is for their life.

I don’t think there is anything more exciting in life than to know that your children love God and are walking in His ways and that they don’t live to please man…but to please God. At the same time it’s not just all about work and no fun. While they are there, they end up having lots of fun activities for the children.

For parents who are looking for a good place for your children to go for the summer I would encourage you to look into Summer School of Training and see if it would be something that your teen might enjoy. While they are out having fun that will give you the parent an opportunity to spend time doing some of the things that you could not do if your children were at home. Your children will be in good hands and there is nothing to worry about because the staff is great and loves working with your children.

Their hearts are for your children in making sure they know God and make Him known to others. Christian counselors are their to teach and help them learn how to make better decisions in life. This program will better equip your children to be able to go out and face the world full on because they will know the truth about some of the things that are out there and are a danger for your children. I can truly say that it would be a blessing to have your children go to one of the Summer Training Programs that YWAM has going through out the summer each year.

Making Magic at Chuck E. Cheese

January 8th, 2010

Chuck E. Cheese is as they say, “Where a kid can be a kid!” From arcades to pizza to seeing Chuck E. Cheese himself you can be sure that every visit is a magical one at Chuck E. Cheese in Tyler. Chuck E. Cheese has easy to reach arcades for toddlers and cool action packed arcades for older kids. Most all of the arcades spit out tickets which you can redeem for prizes. Every child can win a prize no matter how many tickets he or she received. If you want a larger prize than what your tickets can get you, you can pay the difference with cash. Saving getting the prizes till you are about to leave makes leaving this awesome place a little easier. It’s so much fun you’ll find yourself staying till closing.

With the safety kid check at the only entrance to the store, employees can be sure that no child can leave without the adult that brought them. This can put a parents mind at ease. At the kid check at the entrance a matching number is stamped on the adults hand and each child’s hand. This number can only be seen under a black light which is located at the entrance/exit. A child cannot leave without an adult with the matching number.

The menu at Chuck E. Cheese is nothing to brag about. It’s not the best tasting food in Tyler but it’s not bad either. The pizza is made fresh and the salad bar has fresh veggies, I can’t complain about that. If the prices are too high for you check out the Chuck E. Cheese website (chuckecheese.com) for coupons. They always have specials on family packs that usually include tokens. Your child can also receive free tokens when he or she brings in a report card with good grades. There is also a “reward calendar” that you can download from the Chuck E. Cheese website to fill out and bring in for free tokens. The reward calendar is a list of things or chores that your child can do at home such as clean your room. The parent checks off things on the list and when the list has been completed the child can exchange it for tokens. Pretty good deal if you ask me.

But of course the best thing about Chuck E Cheese in Tyler Texas is seeing Chuck E himself. Whether for a birthday party or just having fun it’s always a blast to see this mouse walk out and give you a hug, unless you are terrified of human size mice.

Chuck E Cheese is also a great place to work. It’s fun! It’s not a stressful job. You could be Chuck E Cheese and make kids smile. The manager in Tyler has let Chuck E go visit the Pediatric wing in the hospital some mornings when business was slow. You can work in the kitchen making pizza and cotton candy. The main priorities as an employee at Chuck E Cheese is one: be sure every guest leaves happy and two: have fun. You do have to have energy to keep up and be able to handle loud noises, but other than that Chuck E Cheese’s in Tyler Texas is a great place to work and play.
