Eating frequently for weight loss in Tyler, Texas

July 29th, 2010

Nearly every fad diet out there will tell you to deprive your body of calories and exercise yourself to death in order to lose weight.  Well, not only is this a sure recipe for failure, it is also dangerous for your health.  Any weight you do lose will come back once you go off the diet, and you may even gain a few extra pounds because you have slowed your metabolism down so much.  When you eat smart choices often, however, it sends a message to your body that it is getting all the energy it needs so there is no reason to keep storing fat.

The best idea is to eat smaller meals or snacks every 2-3 hours up to 6 times a day.  Some people find this more difficult than it sounds because of busy Tyler, Texas schedules.  Many people feel that they are stuffing themselves constantly and have difficulty eating as often as prescribed because they just don’t feel hungry.  The idea, however, is to eat small portions, not 4 course dinners.  Reach for a handful of grapes one time, a cup of low-fat yogurt the next, and maybe a small grilled chicken salad or sandwich on wheat bread for a more substantial meal.

Eating this way rather than the traditional “3 squares a day” will help to put your body’s metabolism into high gear and you will see pounds start to come off even with no additional effort.

Sky Vue Drive-in Theater

Outdoor movie drive in, Tyler TX

Sky Vue Drive-in

Sky Vue Drive-In Theater
10713 Hwy. 69 North, Tyler, Texas 75706

Did you know – Tyler even has a drive-in movie theater!

Sky Vue is north of Tyler on Hwy 69 (towards Lindale) just off loop 323.

Each night they show 2 movies, usually a G or PG perhaps followed by one of a more restricted age-range. The movies they show are all new releases with some old classics – just like a regular theater. There is one price for both movies but it is fine to leave after the first movie or come just for the second one – it is not difficult to get in or out of the field and there is always a 10 minute break between the films so you won’t be disturbing the viewers of the later film if you move your vehicle.

A visit to the drive-in is a fun family experience unlike other movie theaters in Tyler. First the excitement builds as you wait in the car line (not for long though) to pay. Then you pick your spot. We like to be quite close to the huge screen but not close enough to get neck-ache.

You can buy popcorn, drinks and other snacks at the consignment booth. They have pizza too. These items are very reasonable compared to other movie theatres. At the booth, they will also lend you some insect repellent in case you want to sit outside your car. I should add that there are also restrooms available on site.

We like to take garden chairs and blankets and sit outside our car. The kids have a wonderful time lying on a mat and snuggling up under their blankets watching the feature on the big screen in the sky. It’s great that they can wriggle and move round without disturbing people. I was able to take the baby to the movies too and even walk around a little with him and still not miss any of the film.

The sound is loud – but not too loud. It makes it all the more absorbing for the children. If you want to you can sit inside your car and tune in on the radio for your own private showing. I did that when I was pregnant and reclined the seat right back so I was super comfortable!

A visit to the drive-in is a bit weather dependent and obviously it is reliant on it being dark, so mid-summer is not the best time to go unless you want to stay up very, very late! But in the beautiful Texas spring and fall it is perfect for a good evenings entertainment.

A movie under the stars. Not just a family experience but for all you young lovers out there it is quite a romantic (and cheap) date! Prices – adults: $6 children: $4 under 5-free. This covers both films.

You can find out what films are showing next by signing up on their website to receive details of the upcoming showings at www.tylerdrivein.com

Tyler SKYVUE

January 17th, 2010

Outdoor movie drive in, Tyler TX
Tyler SKYVUE is our drive-in theater that is located at 10713 Hwy 69 North, Tyler, Texas 75706. Just three minutes north of Tyler’s Loop 323 and four minutes south of Lindale’s Interstate 20. The cost is $6 per adult and $4 per child that is 5-12 years old…younger than that are free. It’s a great place to go if you want to watch a movie, but in a different way. You get to watch two movies and they are newer releases. I enjoy going because you can take your own chairs and sit in the outside. You can comment on the movie, if you want and won’t get in trouble by talking in a closed room. You can also take whatever snacks and drinks you want, which saves you money. They have a place where you can buy snacks and drinks if you would rather than bringing your own.

Movies theaters are a great entertainment and how about a different experience with a drive-in theater? Going to an outdoor theater is very fun and interesting. You have to wait until it gets dark outside before they start the movies, which is usually somewhere around 7p.m. or so. They usually end by midnight or later because its two movies you are watching….so you get two for the price of one. Skyvue is a great place for you to go out and have some fun with your friends and/or family and not worry about going broke while you do it.

Skyvue isn’t far off, whether you live in Lindale or Tyler, it is worth the drive to see a movie. This makes a great gift…to pick up some friends and take them as a group to see two movies for the price of one, we did that and ended up having a blast and decided it was worth doing more.

Starbucks in Tyler TX

January 13th, 2010

Well what can I say about Starbucks that you haven’t already heard. Starbucks is a wonderful place especially early in the morning when you are having a hard time waking up and have to go to work or school. Starbucks is open early for business if I am not mistaken. I think they open up around 6:00 a.m. in the morning. I don’t think that most people go to work any earlier than that. I especially love the Starbucks that is located around Highway 64 because the people are very friendly and make sure that you are satisfied with their service.

I know that Tyler has several other locations around town, but the one on Hwy 64 is close to where I live and is also near a gas station, Jack in the Box, and Brookshires. If you have to go shopping you can stop in and get a cup of coffee. They have so many selections on coffee that even if I could list them all I would not want to. My point is that they have lots of varieties to choose from. If you like it hot they have it hot or if you prefer it on ice they can do that also and if you prefer frozen they also can do that.

If you are not a coffee drinker they have teas and smoothies. Their smoothies are not that good and I believe they should stick to the coffee business when it comes to drinks. They also have a variety of food that you can order from that are all pretty tasty. Muffins, coffee cake and other snacks are available. They often have a coffee tasting, where they allow you to taste their coffee for free so they can get your opinion on their flavors.

This past Halloween they had a pumpkin carving contest and they gave out candy, did face painting, and other cool stuff. The winner of the carving got a free coffee for getting first place. Well they all got a little something even second and third place. I know that lots of people love to go hang out at Starbucks with their friends while enjoying a cup of coffee. The coffee price could be a little cheaper, but I guess that is the price you pay for the quality of Starbucks.

The cost does not seem to stop people from going and buying a cup of coffee. So I guess it’s worth the money. I must admit that I enjoy going once in a while and getting a cup of coffee. I call it my treat. I can’t afford it that often, but once in a while it’s a must do. Some things are worth paying a little more for. So be nice to yourself and treat yourself to a Starbucks cup of coffee. They also sell gift cards which make excellent birthday gifts and holiday gifts. You could also buy a gift card just to say thank you to someone special in your life. Starbucks also sells their coffee and other items such as coffee cups, mugs, etc.

If I haven’t sold you yet on a cup of coffee, then better not get a job as a sales person or marketing. Now all jokes aside, we all know that Starbucks is awesome and people love hanging out there because it’s the place to be.

Best Known Local Lindale Coffee House

January 4th, 2010

Rockwell’s Coffee Brewery

Lindale’s coffee shop, Rockwells, may not live up to the taste of Starbucks but it is the most popular coffee shop in the Lindale area. It is a great place to hang out with your friends. Nearby in Mount Sylvan is an even more interesting Coffee Shop known as Mount Sylvan Coffee and Mercantile that is also worth checking out.

Enjoy a hot cup of coffee, or one of the “classics” such as a latte, cappuccino or espresso. The drink menu may not be as long as Starbucks’ but you will be able to find something that you want. For the non coffee drinkers Rockwells offers different teas and Fruit drinks. Also if you are hungry they serve snacks, desserts, and even meals. Come enjoy a sandwich or salad in a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere.
The artsy atmosphere makes it comfortable to hang out. Couches and comfortable chairs helps when you are trying to get that midterm paper done, or to play games with your family or friends. Friday and Saturdays there is live music. Games are available there to make your visit more enjoyable.
