My Favorite Tyler Pizza Place

September 5th, 2012

As a big sports fan, I typically prefer to watch my teams from the comfort of my own living room. This way, I can pause and rewind the games, get up and come back as I please without missing anything and not have to worry about where I’m at and who’s around to hear and see me react when something good or bad happens.

However, there are two alternatives for places to go other than home to watch the game in Tyler. The first is at Buffalo Wild Wings and the second is Double Daves Pizzaworks.

It’s no-wonder why Double Dave’s slogan is “Wings, beer, sports.” When you go, you’re paying for good food and a great atmosphere.

The best time to go to Buffalo Wild Wings is during football season on a Sunday afternoon. Every TV (and they have many) is tuned to one of the many NFL games and you don’t have to miss a thing. When one game is one a commercial break, you can simply turn your head and watch another game since you have several options.

Another slogan for Buffalo Wild Wings is “You have to be here,” and you’re a sports fan, it’s an atmosphere you have to experience at least once. Pick a game, any game. It can be your favorite team playing or the prime time game of the week.

While you’re there try out the many flavors of wings, beer and sports (sure, sports can have a favor, you just have to be there to experience it.)

Double Dave’s is one also on my list for favorite places to go to watch the game and eat. If you’re talking favorite overall place, it comes in third, after my living room and Buffalo Wild Wings.

The best time to go to Double Dave’s is during lunch for the buffet but honestly, there’s no wrong time. The pepperoni rolls are incredible and unlike anything else you’ve ever had and they have a wide range of different types of pizza, and of course, big screen TVs showing the biggest game taking place. What’s not to like?

As football season approaches, something to consider is to go during a Sunday or Monday night game. That’ll really make you ready.

Weight-Loss Challenge

July 2nd, 2012

The New Year came and left and losing weight was NOT one of my goals this year. Every year I had set a weight-loss goal for myself and I do not lose weight, so I figured out a plan for that not to happen, I will not make that a goal. At this point I was still going to the gym sometimes. When I say “Sometimes” I really mean when I had the energy to get my three children ready and piled in the car and drive across town to get to Tony Cruz XTC Sports and Fitness. I had no motivation. In January I saw a sign in the women’s locker room, it was advertising a twelve week weight loss program that had a cash prize. The competitive side of me was extremely excited to go for it, but every time I thought about it the more I second guessed my decision to sign up.

The time came when I went to the gym to sign up. I knew it was going to be tough, but would be worth it in the end. There was a pretty long line to weigh in and get measured. I really thought I would not have a chance to win. I went ahead and signed up anyway. They wrote down my measurements and weight, and took before pictures. Once a week I would meet with a nutrition trainer and weigh in. the first time I meet with my nutritionist I was introduced to Herbalife.

Herbalife is a brand name weight loss product. The Herbalife shakes are great and come in many different flavors, my favorite being Café Latte. I decided to do a shake twice a day, usually I would do a shake for lunch and dinner and eat a good breakfast, like oatmeal and fruit. I also drank the Hebalife tea; a tea that is full of natural ingredients and burns calories. Later I added Aminogen which helps break downs proteins and amino acids, it reduces bloating that is caused by incomplete protein digestion, and it promoted lean muscle mass. This diet was the most important part of my weight loss. In order to lose the most weight possible, you have to remember that diet is 70% of weight loss. The other 30 % is a strong workout routine.

Being a mom, gym choice is so important, not only for the workout routines, but also for the childcare provided. XTC has a great room in the front part of the gym that you can keep an eye on your kids. My kids really love to go to the gym. I can work out worry free. I have tried different classes at the gym and the best class I tried was the Tuesday and Thursday noon cycle class. I had a great workout doing the cardio kick boxing, but I never can keep up. The workouts are very extreme and the instructors are so encouraging. Many people love the Zumba classes but I feel so silly due to my lack of rhythm, maybe I will try it again. A couple times I did a session with a personal trainer, Sam Brown. He showed me the best workouts to do in the gym and he knew that I could not always make it out to the gym so he showed me the best workouts to do at home.

During the weight loss challenge I would weigh in with a personal and nutrition trainer, Sam Brown. I loved this because I knew that if I cheated on my diet, or if I was not working out hard, it would show on the scale. Sam pushed me to lose weight each week, and to set goals that were beyond what I thought I could do. I did a few personal workout training sessions, which left me so sore but showed immediate results. Every week I pushed myself during my cycle classes or kickboxing at XTC, and I would not cheat on my diet. I immediately was seeing the results of my hard work. The first week I lost seven pounds, and the next week I had a four pound loss. The best thing was the inches I was losing. My pants were fitting better, and then they were not fitting at all.

At the end of the 12 weeks I lost a total of 42.4 pounds and 10 inches off of my waist. I ended up coming in third in the contest, and won just over $200. But the best thing about doing the whole thing was the energy that I gain while losing the weight. I feel like I can keep up with my kids more. I actually look forward to going to the gym to workout. Not to mention, I feel better about the way I look. I am still seeing the pounds melt off and the inches drop!

Working out and dieting is hard. The hardest part is getting started. HerbaLife is more than a diet, it is a healthier lifestyle. I believe in this product so much, I became an independent distributor and now sell it to my friends and family who also want to commit to something better than processed food and drive thru food.

Snow Balls in South Tyler on Broadway

April 13th, 2011

Red Barn Snow Balls

The weather has made it time for snow cones once again and by that I mean shaved ice.

When I was a kid all we ever got was ground up chunks of ice and food coloring.

What you have here is very delicately thinly shaven sheets of ice that when fallen from the ice machine turns into soft snow. This shaven ice is like eating the fresh snow off Santa’s rooftop.

The snow balls are covered not just in food coloring but any of over about 100 different flavors to choose from.

I usually never get too experimental when it comes to snow cone flavors so I go with the traditional icecream, coconut, or the other flavor that tastes closest to sugar syrup.

My son and I went by the snow ball place at the Red Barn square shopping center. We both got icecream flavored snow cones and I could not believe how well this energy supplement boosted both me and my sons energy levels as well as increased brain function.

The Donut Shop

March 4th, 2011

The Donut Palace
A donut shop, simply a bakery specializing in sweet fried pastries, infamous in American pop culture. The Donut Palace is Tylers donut shop, with multiple locations and great prices they have served the hungry starting at five every morning with fresh donuts and eclairs. They even have that classic southern favorite “pig’s in a blanket” with cheese or cheese and jalapeno for the brave.

The Donut Palace may not be the best, or be the cleanest, or have the most massive selection of flavors, but one thing is for sure and that is that they’re every where. Donut Palace’s are conveniently existent as a donut source for Tyler residents. The Donut Palace fills the donut shaped void in Tyler left by Baskin Robins long ago in the days of twenty four hour donuts.

But there’s no point lamenting our lost donuts, for Donut Palace has picked up the torch of fried breakfast rings and carried the stomachs of Tylers hungry and given much needed life blood to our courageous police force.

The donut options may be limited but be grateful for the ten or so varieties, some people will never be so lucky to taste Boston creme filled, blueberry cake or even strawberry with sprinkles. The service at Donut Palace is fast and polite, you can be sure that you will be in and out with your donuts and beverage of choice as efficiently as possible.

Emily Skipper has come up with a wonderful idea – Jam Jars. No she didn’t invent jam jars. She just came up with the idea of stuffing them full of mouth-watering, homemade desserts and selling them online.

Each jam jar is a single serving dessert in an eight or four ounce jam jar. Although if you don’t devour them immediately you can save them in your refrigerator for up to two weeks or in your freezer for up to six months.

The eight ounce jam jars sell for six dollars a piece and the four ounce jam jars sell for three-fifty. Right now Emily has the following desserts available (S’mores, Peach Cobbler, German Chocolate Cake, Rocky Road Brownie, Mixed Berry Cobbler, Birthday Cake, Apple Pie, Pecan Pie, Devil’s Food Cake, and Cherry Pie) although she’s always experimenting with new desserts. In fact if you want you can even send her special requests. If you do you have to order a minimum of six jam jars and give them at least a weeks notice. If it’s possible to get your special request in a jam jar rest assured you’ll get it. If not, they will let you know.

Also if you order the Baker’s Choice (they choose from their list of flavors or experiments) you get a dollar off the price of each jam jar.

Jam jars are perfect for fun desserts, parties or gifts. Go online to www.jamjarsweets.com and check them out for yourself.
