My Favorite Tyler Pizza Place

September 5th, 2012

As a big sports fan, I typically prefer to watch my teams from the comfort of my own living room. This way, I can pause and rewind the games, get up and come back as I please without missing anything and not have to worry about where I’m at and who’s around to hear and see me react when something good or bad happens.

However, there are two alternatives for places to go other than home to watch the game in Tyler. The first is at Buffalo Wild Wings and the second is Double Daves Pizzaworks.

It’s no-wonder why Double Dave’s slogan is “Wings, beer, sports.” When you go, you’re paying for good food and a great atmosphere.

The best time to go to Buffalo Wild Wings is during football season on a Sunday afternoon. Every TV (and they have many) is tuned to one of the many NFL games and you don’t have to miss a thing. When one game is one a commercial break, you can simply turn your head and watch another game since you have several options.

Another slogan for Buffalo Wild Wings is “You have to be here,” and you’re a sports fan, it’s an atmosphere you have to experience at least once. Pick a game, any game. It can be your favorite team playing or the prime time game of the week.

While you’re there try out the many flavors of wings, beer and sports (sure, sports can have a favor, you just have to be there to experience it.)

Double Dave’s is one also on my list for favorite places to go to watch the game and eat. If you’re talking favorite overall place, it comes in third, after my living room and Buffalo Wild Wings.

The best time to go to Double Dave’s is during lunch for the buffet but honestly, there’s no wrong time. The pepperoni rolls are incredible and unlike anything else you’ve ever had and they have a wide range of different types of pizza, and of course, big screen TVs showing the biggest game taking place. What’s not to like?

As football season approaches, something to consider is to go during a Sunday or Monday night game. That’ll really make you ready.

Elite Bike Shop

March 5th, 2011

Elite Bicycles
Elite Bicycles is Tyler’s premier bike shop. This shop is no second string outfit, they are equipped as any adequate bike shop should be. Elite is undaunted by providing you with the tools and even valuable first hand instruction of the repair or procedure you might be considering for your bike.

When a bike shop puts the equal exchange of knowledge and equipment ahead of making money from the unprepared it shows an important ethical quality, the type of which should be expected from all businesses.

The name Elite Bicycles has a certain air of superiority that could easily be criticized if the business was, in reality,  anything but elite. Well I am here to assure you that the name Elite is accurate in it’s description of Tyler’s local bike shop.

A strong cycling foundation is set for Tyler in Elite Bicycles, behind the store a qualified and dedicated staff deliver a top notch supply of bikes to the Tyler public. There is a bike for everyone from bmx riders and the Sunday afternoon cruisers all the way to the serious long distance cyclist looking to get their hands on the newest Felt road bike.

I believe I even spotted a few fixed gears hanging around the show room for the so inclined. Elite typically has a unique stock of high quality and even vintage products that alone makes for a worth while inquiry every now and then; products  such as the new-old stock Campingolo Pista crankset which is currently available for any cyclist with an above average taste in bike components.
Elite Bicycles in Tyler TX
Elite is certainly not the most inexpensive cycling store out there, they will occasionally price a pump a little too high, but this is the way of most upper class businesses, bringing you high quality but at a corresponding price bracket.

Tyler keeps Elite Bikes quite busy being it’s really the only close by place to get bike repair, so experience is well on the side of the staff. Elite demonstrates it’s knowledge and ability through it’s capable staff of passionate cyclists as well as through the thoughtful supply of biking equipment and high quality velocipedes.

No Tyler resident should have to travel far to meet their cycling needs with Elite Bicycles so close and so capable. This is not to say that finding that elusive or expensive bike part is beyond searching online, but it’s always a good idea to check at Elite first both to support local independent business growth and also for the great service and effort they show in consumer interaction.

Elite is an incredible resource for all bike owners in Tyler and a likely beginning for many emerging cyclists.

Cheddars

October 23rd, 2009

On a Sunday afternoon the waiting room in the popular Cheddars restaurant begins to pour out on to the sidewalk. People crowd together for a good table. You would think that an extremely popular place would have me saying great praises about the well cooked food and the great service. Well, that was not my experience, and I have returned and again and again both the food and the services were below par.

As I walked into the over populated restaurant I stood shoulder to shoulder with complete strangers. Waiting for a table and, because of the hype, expecting the greatest food. They handed me a vibrating beeper with a red blinking light. As it begins to flash and vibrate I get excited as if I have won the lottery. As the hostess dressed in black lead me to my booth. I sat waiting as the young waiter approached dressed nicely with a blue collar shirt and black pants and a tie.

I flipped through the menu and everything sounded so good with great prices. For a second I started to understand all the people standing in the small crowed waiting area. I ordered my usual Dr. Pepper, what is the point of free refills when the waiter never comes to refill your drinks?

After hearing the amazing rumors, I order the spinach dip. I must admit, my taste buds sang as I dipped the thin chip into the layers of melted different cheese and green spinach topped with a spoon full of sour cream. I started to eat the warm outer sides of the dip but as I got into the center I took a large bite of halfway frozen spinach and cold cheese. I started to get frustrated that my drink still has not been filled, and annoyed that my food was not sitting in front of me after 30 minutes.

Finally my well-done steak and loaded bake potato sat in front of me. In my vocabulary “well-done” steak does not mean bloody and bright red. I was waiting for my food to grow legs moo at my and walk off. I ask the waiter to take it back and put it back on the grill. About twenty minutes of being sick of waiting, the waiter brings it back. As I cut into the slab of meat once again, I was so upset as again it was still really pink.

I was too annoyed and frustrated to ask a second time to re-cook my steak that I just asked for my ticket. I love when I ask for my ticket and the waiter has it in their little pouch on their belt and just hand it to you the second you ask for it. But that is just to easy to do for the waiters at Cheddars. I watch the waiter as he stands at the computer flirting with the cute hostess, with his phone in his hand hoping to win over her number, not even paying attention to what he is suppose to be doing.

Finally after waiting until he is finished his conversation, he brings me my ticket. I pay the amount for the food and leave. Well I was certainly disappointed walking through the crowded parking lot to my car. I don’t understand how they have so much business, I guess quantity is more important than quality. No, that still does not explain it.

I did return to Cheddars for my dear friend’s 21st birthday, but this time we sat at the bar. I was surprised at the amazing service and a great atmosphere, besides the strange girl hitting on my married sister, and a bar fly trying to ease-drop into our conversations. Was I really in the same restaurant? They had great drinks and really good prices. Even our food was cooked and everything came out really fast. Even our drinks were constantly refilled. I don’t really know how everything was so much better and different, but I really did enjoy my bar-experience and walked away with great stories and wonderful memories.

So I don’t know what to expect each time I eat there. I could have horrible service and uncooked meat or decent food and great service. But I still don’t see why it is one of the most popular restaurants in Tyler.
