Weight Loss In Tyler

December 10th, 2010

It is that time of year again, it may be the Thanksgiving turkey or the Christmas ham but weight loss is on most everyone’s mind. Tyler has many great places that help people loss weight and lead a healthier life. Three great ways to loss weight is to first find a support group, eat healthier food, and to exercise.

Tyler has great support groups; one very popular support group is Weight Watchers. At Weight Watchers there are many great people that are in similar situations as you are. People are there to encourage you not only to loose weight, but to live a better life. They have many great books that help you eat the healthiest choice at all different restaurants and at your home. The Weight Watchers’ cook book has many great meal ideas. Some of the restaurants in Tyler, such as Applebee’s, has a Weight Watcher’s approved section on the menu. Weight Watchers has many support meetings to encourage people to continue to eat healthy and to keep loosing weight that meet the goals you set for yourself.

Eating healthy can many times can seem to be the more expensive option. The soon to be health food store in Tyler, Fresh, will be an easy, convenient place o find all your health food needs. Tyler also has many granaries. At the Tyler granaries you can get many different vitamins, health drinks and organic foods. When you are buying organic foods, they may be the healthiest choice but they are the most expensive choice of food. When shopping at Wal-Mart and Brookshire’s grocery stores it is easy to find a large selection of food full of MSG and everything unhealthy. The healthiest way to grocery shop in stores like these is to only shop in the sections around the grocery section. This way you are missing the frozen foods that are loaded with preservatives. You are also missing the sodas and snack foods. When you are shopping for healthier chooses keep in mind that it is much healthier to make things from scratch than to buy something that is pre-cooked, packaged and frozen. This is a cheaper way to shop healthier, but when you shop organic at granaries and soon at Fresh, the results are fast and noticeable.

Finding a gym should not be a hard task if you live in Tyler. There are many different gyms that are at all different locations in Tyler. There is only one YMCA in Tyler but if you have a membership there, you can also use it at the YMCA in Whitehouse. The Zumba classes have become popular and fun. Zumba is a fast pace cardio class that works out all of your muscles. The YMCA in Tyler has a pool and many swim classes for adults and for children, starting at only a few months old. Curves is an all women gym that works out a women’s body to tone and loose weight. The Curves’ equipment is laid out in a circle so that women can use each machine for about a minute and then move to the next machine. If you are a mom, it is important to find a gym that has a place for young children to stay while you work out. The YMCA in Whitehouse has a great place for young children to play. It is out in the open so you are able to check on your kids while taking a break from working out. Premier Fitness also has a great child care on most days, but not Sunday. HOLLYWOOD TYLER ROSE MOVIE THEATER

April 15th, 2010

1250 Loop 323 South SW
Tyler
75701
903 592 7000

The Tyler Rose is the only movie theater serving the North (East) of Tyler – the rest are on South Broadway. (There is a drive-in, Sky-Vue, on Hwy 69 N)

The Hollywood has 10 screens and shows all the latest releases. It is easily accessible from the loop and easy to find and has plenty of parking in the front. There is a Chicken Express and Rudys BBQ very close by for those wanting to eat before or after watching a film.

The place itself is slightly seedy. The location is a favorite place to meet for local teens who hang around the front of the theater. I have heard some people complain that they don’t feel safe walking to their car at night there. It is sad but true that they have police presence working in the theater at the weekends to avoid trouble. At least the police are friendly, the other personnel will not give you a smile as they serve you. Sometimes the lines to get a ticket are very long but you can speed up the process by buying your ticket on line in advance (fandango.com)

Another negative point to mention is that the movie theater does not seem clean. The seats are grubby, there is sometimes trash on the floors and the floors have a slightly sticky feel as you walk through the complex. However, the seats are platform style (and yet solid – set in concrete) and you can have a great view of the movie wherever you chose to sit in the auditorium.

There is a concessions stand with limited food and drinks. No fancy flavored popcorn here but plenty of candies, sodas and hot dogs. If you are a big snack consumer it is good to know that there are free refills on the large sodas and large popcorn.

One final complaint – they often turn the lights on before the credits have finished rolling on the film which gives you the feeling that you are being turned out early!

On a more positive note, Hollywood Theaters do sometimes have special events like live music from local artists Bongo and the Point and they have giveaways at new releases on most weekends and holidays.

Seeing a movie at the Hollywood is also less expensive than most other movie theaters Prices – adult $7.75, children and seniors – $5.75. There is also a student discount and at performances between 3-6pm (Twilight showings) it is only $4.50. Tuesdays are the special night, where adults pay the children’s price and hot dogs are just $1.50.

Not sure I would go so far as to recommend the Tyler Rose but if you are happy with a ‘no frills’ experience and prefer feeling a little uneasy walking to your car than driving to Broadway to watch a film then it’s OK.

Wendy’s on 64W Near Wal-Mart

January 19th, 2010

Thinking of Wendy’s makes me smile. It is one of the few fast food restaurants that cause random exclamations of “I want!” from me. Just imagining the classic and comforting yellow and red sign, I find myself craving a ninety-nine cent “Frosty”. The “Frosty” has become a comfort to me due to the several times I ate them after surgeries or when having a sore throat. Though, there is probably nothing helpful about the frozen chocolate dairy dessert that we all love – except for producing smiles.

So what is special about this Wendy’s? The answer is that it is a Wendy’s, and if you live on the West or North side of Tyler, then you are close enough to drive to it. It is also conveniently located within the Wal-Mart Supercenter parking lot. Well, I should say that excluding its proximity to my most used shopping location, Wendy’s is inconveniently located within the Wal-Mart Supercenter parking lot. It is purely because of the traffic and where the entrances are. If you need to do Wal-Mart and eat, then I suggest going to Wal-Mart first. Trying to turn left into Wendy’s from the main entrance can be both frightening and frustrating. The traffic that runs perpendicular with Highway 64 has right of way at all times, and the flow of traffic so rarely ebbs. Leaving Wal-Mart you can just turn right into the Wendy’s which works out beautifully.

Other than that, I choose Wendy’s often because their ninety-nine cent menu exceeds the industry standards. In fact, it seems to me that they have set the standard, and other fast food restaurants are slowly climbing on board. I can get a full meal for my wife and I for under seven dollars. I’ll order two double stack cheeseburgers, a breaded chicken sandwich, a small fry and two small sodas all for less than I’d pay for one meal at most other places. The cool thing is that I don’t have to settle to do this. Their food simply tastes wonderful and is fully capable of filling us both.

They also have some of the best standard priced value meals. My wife will often order their salads which were surprisingly tasty. I recommend playing it safe with the grilled chicken Caesar salad. If you are feeling adventurous but want to keep it healthy, try the Mandarin chicken salad. All of the burger and chicken sandwich meals have been good in my opinion. It’s more just a matter of choosing the size you want. Though, I almost always go back to the ninety nine cent menu because it’s cheap and just as good in quality and quantity.

The other positive is something that some people might laugh at. We like to eat at this Wendy’s because of the aesthetics in the parking lot. The parking lot is usually clean aside from the occasional bag of used sandwich and fry packaging that someone was too lazy to deal with. What we love the most is the grackle population. If you are unfamiliar with these birds I suggest making a trip to this parking lot. They look like slightly more unattractive crows, but they have an amazing awkward caw. They also have become trained like seagulls to come really close to people and expect a handout. So, we watch the birds and then watch the impatient people trying to leave the Wal-Mart parking lot. It’s entertaining to those like me who enjoy observing people.

As for negative things, there aren’t many. The store sometimes smells weird. The employees have been pleasant more than ninety percent of the time. I’ll occasionally catch the grumpy window associate during a rush, but luckily it is occasional and not a habit, like so many businesses in America. Also, before visiting this location, commit to not being upset over the salt. They rarely salt the fries correctly and sometimes at all. I suggest automatically asking for extra salt and ketchup. Then you can just keep being happy at little effort on your part or theirs.

Another weird experience I had with this Wendy’s was not food related. I had set up a time with them to do a fundraising car wash for a mission trip I was going on with a group of students. We had called at least a month in advance, and the manager had been very kind to say that we could use their parking lot and water for the day. The day of the car wash we woke early and got our supplies ready. Someone suggested I call to confirm, and the employee acted like I was crazy. They had no record of my team being scheduled. In fact, there was another team scheduled to do a car wash on that day. It was lame, but I don’t hold it against them. I know how stressful working in fast food can be. Random events like mine do not take precedent when you have hungry Tyler residents to feed.

Overall, I’d give this Wendy’s the number one slot in Tyler fast food burger joints. Give it a try. If you already like Wendy’s, then I think you’ll prefer this one to the other locations.
