A Wish List of New Businesses and Activities in Tyler TX

February 10th, 2011

We’ve spent a lot of time and words here at Tyler TX Directory, discussing old and new businesses and cultural goings on, and giving them our thumbs up and or thumbs down. We’ve covered a lot of territory sometime in triplicate and occasionally disagreeing even amongst ourselves. For instance one of our writers once wrote a positive review of Cici’s Pizza, and I on the other hand expressed a preference for Totino’s frozen pizza over that particular establishment. Point being we’ve offered sometimes numerous opinions on a lot of Tyler area businesses. This got me to thinking, what new type of business / activities do we need here? What are the missing pieces in our socio- economic and cultural lives that would make our community more complete? I think we can eliminate Banks, Churches, Schools and Mexicans restaurants right from the start. So here is my personal wish list of new businesses and things to do in Tyler. These are not in any way scientific, and based simply on conversations and personal preferences.

A new water company: If you’ve visited this site before you may know that I’ve written quite critically about Southern Utilities (SU) in the past. I’d say this company has terrible customer service but that would imply they do have it. SU has been able to operate as a completely unapproachable entity, due to a complete lack of area competition. Not to mention their prices are quite high. Customers immediately outside the Tyler city limits simply have no other options. I have no idea how the infrastructure for water supply works but the Tyler area is certainly ripe pickings for any new water utility company. Big- city delivery Chinese food: One thing I really miss about living in a big city is the ability to have nearly any type of food delivered to my front door. To my knowledge the closest thing we have to delivery Chinese food is Peaking, which is a terrific restaurant, but their delivery area doesn’t cover the entire city of Tyler, at any rate they don’t deliver to west, south west side of town. Fewer buffets and more local take- out and delivery would be great for our area I think.

An authentic Indian food restaurant: Far be it from me to suggest another eatery for this town but so long as it’s not another faceless corporate franchise that we have “got to have,” personally I’m open to greater variety. Indian food would be a great new addition to our restaurant repertoire. While I love Pizza and good mom and pop Mexican food, Indian would add a little spice to our culinary lives. As someone who really digs Indian food I would certainly be a regular.

An Imax movie theater:It seems to take about five to ten years or so for the biggest bad-est movie theater in Tyler to get over run by troubled youth and rowdy teens who turn the parking lot into a meeting place for area police. When that happens a newer safer theater is opened and the process begins all over again. So why not try establishing a more upscale theater, that appealed to a greater cross section of people by carrying both entertaining and educational films, in high def of course, a little farther from the city proper, say perhaps off I- 20 somewhere? Area schools would really benefit and it would add a bit more culture to our area.

Minor league Baseball:We’ve tried this twice, and as I understand it, the sticking point has been the same both times. It seems certain groups with certain religious affiliations objected to beer sales at the ball park. The first time around, the team had some real success and brought in good crowds. But when the fun police caught wind of the fact that beer could be purchased (during the 1997 season), protests ensued. Another attempt was made a few years later but baseball in a dry county didn’t equal as much fun or money and the team folded after a single season. Look I’m a practicing Christian but I’m not concerned that the moral health of my community is going to go into a nose dive if folks have a cold beer at a hot summer ball game. But some people seem to have this paranoid mental image of a drunken orgy erupting after hours of binge drinking, and that’s just not reality. I don’t know too many people who go to the ball park with the intention getting hammered, it’s too expensive. The ball park in Arlington sells beer and it’s arguably one of the most family friendly venues in all of sports. There are leagues that have Tyler in mind if we can just work out this one issue. It would certainly be a great draw for our community. Can we all please observe the maxim “all things in moderation,” and just let people be grown- ups?

So there’s my wish list. It was actually a harder list to compile than I expected it would be. I guess if we sit and think about it, there’s not too much that our area lacks. At the end of the day I’d say we’re blessed to live in a city that has a lot to offer and a lot to do. That’s not to say we can’t improve but we’re doing pretty well.

Wow! Life Sentences handed down for East TX Church Arsonsist in Tyler TX courts this morning

January 10th, 2011

Tyland Baptist Church ArsonThis morning Monday January 10 2011 the 114th Court precised over by Judge Kennedy handed down a total of 7 life sentences between the two East Texas arsonists, Jason Bourque and Daniel McAllister.

Jason and Daniel pleaded guilty to these arson charges back in December of 2010 but sentencing was carried out today.

The state of Texas gave Bourque 5 life sentences and McAllister was given 2 life sentences as well as two 20 year sentences in his part in burning down several East Texas churches.

This appears to be a plea agreement as Daniel and Jason waived their right to appeal their sentencing.

Several of the writers of Tyler TX Directory have family connections or previously attended Tyland Baptist Church which was one of the churches that was burned down by the arsonists.

Because of the family connection we have been following this story pretty close.

Tyland Baptist Church was the last church to rebuild after the fire destruction. For about a year Tyland Baptist church were generously allowed to worship at Willowbrook Baptist Church across the street from Willowbrook country club. Willowbrook Baptist Church 3100 W. Erwin St. Tyler, TX 75702

The life sentences are quite severe in my opinion but at the same time it is a sticky situation because if a harsh judgment wasn’t enforced this type of thing could happen again as more loony kids go on a night of arson pranks.

I feel very sorry for these two because that long in prison is something I don’t wish on anyone and I myself warned them on this site in an open appeal to stop because they would be caught especially if they continued but they didn’t listen to me or anyone else.

Suddenlink vs. Viacom

December 31st, 2010

I switched my television service from Direct TV to Suddenlink cable about nine months ago when I saw my satellite bills increasing and wanted high speed internet in my home. While the cable company and I had a rocky start, (something I wrote about extensively for Tyler TX Directory last spring), we have since ironed out our differences with a series of mutually beneficial compromises which have, until now, lead to a more satisfying television viewing experience. But now it seems there’s once again trouble in paradise. But this time the threat to my domestic entertainment happiness comes from an outside source.

It seems Viacom entertainment is demanding a twenty percent rate increase from Suddenlink and other cable companies. From what I understand, the rate hike comes in part to help subsidize a new “R- rated” movie network that very few customers seem to want, and television giants like Direct TV and Comcast refused to carry on the basis of the fact that they already offer numerous other movie channels. Whatever the Viacom’s agenda, the conglomerate is threatening to pull their networks (which include the MTV, VH1, and Nickelodeon franchises) from the cable giant’s line- up unless they agree to pay the higher price by the December, thirty first midnight deadline. The company (in my opinion) certainly comes off looking like the villain here. I don’t particularly like most of their networks. MTV is merely an enabler for adolescent hedonism, and music vids in general don’t do much for me. What I do hate to lose is Nick and Nick Jr. as they carry my son’s favorite shows.

I am open to the argument that all of this “is just business.” But I don’t much like the way Viacom conducts its business. The faceless media giant is always using its more benign children’s programming as a way of advancing networks with very liberal programming agendas, against the average customer’s desires. While these negotiations take place in the offices of some corporate bureaucrats, customers like me find themselves taking the hit either way. Either my son loses Dora and his other favs or my monthly cable rates go up. Of course I could simply go down a tier, but then I lose other networks I enjoy for only a moderate “savings.” For the time being I can at least appreciate that Suddenlink promising to reimburse customers for any lost channels.

I hope the companies can come to an amicable solution. I guess we’ll know in about four hours. I’m just glad my TiVo is still loaded with children’s shows just in case.

Boo at the Zoo! Halloween at Caldwell

October 30th, 2010

In the last few years since Tyler TX Directory has come under new ownership, a lot has been written about Tyler’s Caldwell Zoo. The zoo has been a worthy point of pride for Tylerites since its founding in 1953. Ever since that time the institution has grown steadily, all the while offering any number of educational programs to area youth and families.

The East Texas climate makes spring and fall the best times of the year to visit the zoo. What better way to spend a beautiful autumn weekend then packing up the boy and strolling through the park like- grounds of the Caldwell Zoo? Well, it seems I wasn’t the only one to whom this thought occurred today. Saturday, October thirtieth was the zoo’s Boo at the Zoo Halloween party. Everywhere there were parents and children in every imaginable Halloween costume. Zoo employees where around every bend handing out candy to young visitors, and letting patrons get up close and personal with animals more in keeping with the Halloween spirit, particularly snakes, spiders, reptiles and other critters.

I don’t exactly remember my last visit but it seems every time I go I find something new. Whether the exhibits I find are actually new or simply new to me, I can’t be sure but it always adds to my experience to observe the zoo’s growth. This time I discovered (or re

discovered, whichever the case may be), the Penguin tanks. I don’t know too many folks who would fail to be entertained by the show they put on. I have to say however that my favorite stop remains the Chakula Café. In cooler weather it’s an ideal spot to sit, read and take in the view of the African exhibit. Add a good cup of coffee to that by the way and you have the makings of a pretty fine day.

Today’s event was a great idea. It gave parents a memorable way to celebrate Halloween with younger children, in a safe family friendly environment. Even better, it’s educational! For those who missed Boo at the Zoo, don’t worry. You haven’t missed autumn. There’s plenty of time to enjoy fall at the Caldwell Zoo. HAMMs Hangar Dance

August 26th, 2010

The very first article I wrote for Tyler TX Directory was a piece entitled World History is Down the Street, and It featured Tyler’s Historical Aviation Memorial Museum (HAMM).

In the past year and a half or so that I’ve been writing for the Directory I’ve referenced the museum a couple of times, including this past July when I covered a visit my son and I made to the museum’s annual static air show.

Well without meaning to write ad- nauseam on a particular topic I thought I would offer a little more free publicity to one of the HAMM’s upcoming fund raising events.

Obviously, the Aviation Museum is a favorite in my house. We usually visit every couple of months or so, and that’s not counting the evenings we’ve spent sitting on the car while parked in the parking lot watching the planes take off and land.

Well it seems this September the museum is holding another event to help raise money for museum improvements and expenses. It’s called a Hanger Dance and features big band swing jazz of the 1940s courtesy of The Tyler Big Band, as well as period aircraft and other vehicles as a backdrop to the evening.

Guests are encouraged to dress in theme although it’s certainly not required. In the interest of full disclosure, I do like jazz, history, and airplanes but dancing is just not something I tend to enjoy.

In fact I reserve the activity fairly exclusively for weddings. But for those who do enjoy the activity, I can only imagine that this would be a really great event! Combine terrific music with the romance of the 1940s and the Second World War and you’ve got a really neat event.

The Dance will be held on Saturday, September twenty fifth, at Tyler Jet Center, right next to the Museum, and will be catered by the Skyline Café, which is also housed in the Museum building.

The evening begins at six pm and runs until about ten. Admission is not particularly cheap at forty dollars per person, but proceeds go to a good cause. This is not the first such dance the HAMM has held by the way. In the past events like this one have helped to raise much- needed funds for museum improvements.
