The Children’s Clothing Consignment Sale

January 27th, 2010

Twice yearly at Harvey Convention Center, Tyler

If you have kids and love a bargain – DO NOT MISS THIS SALE!

The CCC sale is a 3 day weekend event where around 1000 families bring their gently used children’s clothing, shoes, toys, furniture and equipment to be sold at about a third of the new price.

It is run by 2 stay-at-home Moms and a team of volunteers who work at the sale in return for the privilege of shopping early at the preview sale.

It is a very popular place to buy, and sell children’s items. Prepare for crowds on the first day and be aware that you may need to bring a family member to stand in line at the check out area.

Children's Clothing Consignment Sale in Tyler

Having said that, the CCC sale has been finely tuned over the last few years and they are becoming more and more efficient.

What I like about the sale – besides the fact that you can get nice things at exceedingly good value – is that it is easy to find what you are looking for. This is no garage sale. Everything has been carefully laundered, labeled and even hung on the hangers in a particular way on racks in size order, so that you can quickly root through and find what you want. As a seller, it can be a bit intimidating on the first occasion to make sure everything is done properly – but you will soon see that your time and effort is well worth it. Unlike most consignment stores – the split is 70/30 which means you can make a very good return on your items. The seller also sets the price and can decide whether or not the item is to go for half price on the last day of the sale or not. Sellers can pick up any unsold items or donate them to Living Alternatives or the Salvation Army.

As well as consigning some goods, I always spend a lot of money at the sale. Harvey Hall is literally packed with stuff for sale. I buy almost my daughter’s entire wardrobe each season and a good few baby clothes and shoes too. There are fewer clothes for boys – I guess they wear them out more than girls! but I have still found some great deals on nice brands and usually find playwear and swimwear too. In the fall I buy dress up outfits which are very affordable – and then I recycle them the following year! As a pregnant Mom I shopped for all sorts of baby items – they have strollers, backpacks, highchairs, cribs, bouncy chairs and every type of baby toy you can think of. I know that some people buy furniture and bedding at the sale too. There are so many bargains to be had! On the last day many of the items that are left are sold at half price. This is the best day to buy T shirts, play wear, books and videos/DVDs. There are also shoes left that are not so new looking, but fine for playing in.

I can’t begin to think of how much money I have been able to save by shopping at the CCC sale each year. I have to admit that I also love shopping there. I go with friends, leaving the children behind and we pile all our bargains into laundry baskets (as there are no carts to use and strollers are a bit impractical in the loaded space). Harvey Convention Center in Tyler We stop for a Starbucks or Dennys all day breakfast on the way home. It is truly fun!

Find out more about how you can become a seller on www.cccsale.com or just come and browse through the bargains. Admission is free. The next sale is April 8-10th

Starbucks Coffee Tyler Texas

January 8th, 2010

The most popular hangouts in Tyler are coffee shops. What’s not to love? Coffee of any kind, people, and most importantly, WiFi. Tyler built its fourth Starbucks last year. Each one is appropriate for all crowds. If you are a teenager looking for a place to hang out with friends, or if you are a hard studying college student in need of a classroom, or a businessman or woman looking for a conference room. I don’t know if it’s the smell of the cooking coffee bean, the set up of the room, or the some what odd services, but it’s the place that business gets done. To some it is a sanctuary, a place to get away from the rush of everyday life and just relax. It appeals to your tastes. Starbucks is famous for its unending menu. Caramel, mocha, half-caff, just plain coffee, express yourself through your every coffee craving.

One of the most important tools in our modern world is the internet. Starbucks makes it easy to use their internet services. The relaxing environment makes it easy to chat with friends or finish that term paper.

Each Starbucks has its own feel. Whether it’s in a popular book store or on the crowded outdoor shopping center or in the parking lot of a grocery store, each one’s location is convenient for your every day life.

It might seem ridiculous to pay $5 for a cup of coffee; but I think its more than the coffee, it’s the experience and the convenience of each location. Starbucks is one of the best places to hangout and relax and just be you! So visit one of Tyler’s four location and sit back and enjoy a cup of coffee!

Mexican/Seafood do I dare?

January 1st, 2010

With Tyler being overrun with restaurants and a large number of them being mexican restaurants, it is real easy to overlook a restaurant like the Cancun Cafe. If you are in the mood for mexican food and are bored with the multiple Lugars, it might be time to try something with a little kick. Cancun Cafe is located off of the loop in Tyler across from the Green Acres Bowling Alley. Without the bright lights of Mercados it can be easy to overlook but this is one dining spot in Tyler you don’t want to miss.

Cancun Cafe has quality mexican food and surprisingly enough I’ve found that they also have a large quantity of delicious seafood dishes, and no this isn’t fish tacos or a trout with a jalepeno stuffed down its throat, this is quality seafood dishes with a kick, coupled with great mexican food. The signature dish that I have to suggest that everyone try at least once is their fajitas and snowcrab. I found as odd as this sounds it is one of the tastiest combos I’ve ever tried.

The service is decent although many people have had problems with food arriving late. Since this is not one of the more popular mexican restaurants like On the Border or Mercados, you will not find the crowds you will find packed out the doors as is frequently the case at those places, allowing you to be seated almost immediately. The atmosphere is like that of most of the mexican restaurants in Tyler and is roomy enough to cater to nearly all of your party needs. This is a restaurant that hosts events like karaoke night so if you don’t mind the howling that comes with these events it can be a good night out on the town.

Prices are pretty good, with several dishes under $10, and quantities especially in the fajitas and snowcrab are very generous. When ordering a dish like that you might consider taking a bag to go because I’ve found they often serve more than one can eat. So next time you are eating out, try something new like the Cancun Cafe, as long as you don’t mind the occasional wait for your meal it’ll definately be worth your while.

Carmike 14 in Tyler

November 11th, 2009

Ever since Carmike 14 opened several years ago, movie goers have not ceased to rejoice that there was finally an alternative to the infamous “Tyler Rose,” a lousy at a bad location. Over the years, Tyler has continued to expand down South Broadway, with recent additions like Kohls and Ganger Mountain. The Carmike cinemaplex is perfectly located around these shopping centers. This makes it a natural choice for shoppers over the Hollywood Rose theater on West Broadway, which is close to a bank and a chicken store.

Great location aside, Carmike is better than Hollywood Theater in every way imaginable. The staff is friendly and helpful. The box office is inside the door so you don’t have to sweat to death while you’re choosing a movie. The workers do a good job of cleaning up.

This theater also offers digital projection. If you are used to going to movies with black blotches and static lines, digital viewing can be quite a revelation. the colors are so much more vivid, and the picture is always clear. It is important to note that the Hollywood Rose does not offer digital projection. You can also see 3-D movies here at Carmike when applicable.

But for me, the most memorable part of Carmike 14 in Tyler is the snack bar. Because this theater is the only one in town that has the massive popcorn shoot. The popcorn is made upstairs, just over the snack bar, and it flows down to the snack bar like manna from heaven. This type of setup is perfect for those who are easily entertained like me.

The only downside to Carmike 14 is the crowds. Because of its central location, I can rarely drive in to the parking lot without hunting hard for a parking spot. This is especially true on the weekends, naturally. Tylerites love their restaurants and their movies, so expect to have to wade through traffic and lines at the box office and at the snack bar. And expect to pay a little more for a ticket to Carmike 14: $8.25 is the going rate for a regular adult at an evening show. If you don’t like the crowds, consider going to Times Square Cinema, just a couple miles north of Carmike. The screens are smaller there, but the crowds are, too. Just be sure that you don’t go to The Tyler Rose.

Overall, the Carmike 14 Theater in Tyler is a well run establishment, offering a pleasant viewing experience from the opening credits to the last kernel of buttery goodness.
