Movie in the Park

August 4th, 2010

Bergfeld Park has been the home of many shows, banquets, and events in East Texas. Some of them are very odd, like the animals in the park were they only sold ice cream treats for your dog and not for your kids, but some of them are a great idea, like the movie in the park. A few times a year a huge projector screen is set up in the middle of the park and a family friendly film is played. This event is opened for anyone in Tyler TX or even visitors. They always play movies that are appropriate for small children, if it be an old Don Knotts film or a somewhat new release.

Many times people bring free drink and snacks for everyone watching the movies. I was surprised how many people came out to this Tyler TX event. We had so much fun even though the seat were not that comfortable and it was pretty hot outside (it does help that it is not in during the day). This is a great event for your family met other families and the best part is that it is free. You can see signs on the corner of Broadway and the park of the newest shows and times, they also advertise for other up coming events.

WalMart Confusion

August 2nd, 2010

When I walk into Tyler’s Wal-Mart, on the corner of the Loop and highway 64, I am greeted by a group of strange men just hanging out by the entrance. I get sick of these groups of guys that shout at woman to get their numbers. I can not believe girls would actually give these guys their numbers.

As I walk through the dirty store that always seems like the floor is sticky, I get run into a bunch of little kids running through the store with no parents in sight. I get frustrated and walk down to get a tube of toothpaste. As I grab a tube of tooth paste, a shirt is stuffed behind it. I go to get a few groceries and grab something to eat at the Deli.

Some woman sell barbeque chicken chunks with flies flying all around. Some chicken falls on the greasy dirty counter and they just grabbed it up and threw it back in the container with all the other food. I was really grossed out and decided not to eat there. There is a McDonalds connected to this Wal-Mart. I don’t think I would ever eat there.

It always looks really dirty and really greasy. This Wal-Mart is known to be very dangerous and be very careful if you go there, especially at night, when really strange people can not find a better place to hang out at 11:00 at night.

It seems like some of the most stuck up people drive around the Wal-Mart off of Broadway. I always get cut off while walking into the store. One time a car was waiting for me to load my bags of groceries into the car put my two babies into the car seats and buckle them in and put my cart away, just so they could get my spot.

I was trying to hurry to be nice and they kept honking and when I looked up at the driver I noticed that they were signaling for me to hurry up. Excuse me? They should just go find another place. Oh, and by the way, please do not park in the pregnancy parking unless you are pregnant.

So I hate going there because of all the rude people that shop there. But there isn’t any other Wal-Mart that is so convenient. I can just go right across the street to Target, or stay in the same parking lot and enjoy a great burger at Whataburger. The store inside is a lot cleaner than the Wal-Mart I formally talked of, but it always is so crowded.

Every time I go to check out it seems like they have about twenty lanes and maybe five are open. So there will be at least ten people in front of you with their baskets over flowing with stuff. So Wal-Mart, open a few more check-outs, will you?

My very favorite Wal-Mart in Tyler is the newest one on Troop Highway. It is the furthest for me but I think it is worth the drive. It is the largest Wal-Mart in Tyler and always the most orderly. The food always seems so much cleaner and even the people are nicer. The parking lot is larger so people can find their own parking space and don’t have to be so rude to park.

They have great furniture for babies. It is easy to register here because everything so organized compared to the other ones. The people are nicer because they don’t feel cramped into and over crowded store with rude strangers. The greeter is even nicer. Which I think greeters are so funny. What a great job. They are called “greeters” but honestly,  how often do they really greet you. Its like security. Security from all those strange pathetic people that shop lift. But that is off the point I am trying to make.

Troop Wal-Mart greeters actually tell people hello. But I don’t think they deal with as much shop lifting as the Wal-Mart off of highway 64. There is always police there. So if you need to go to Wal-Mart go to Troop, even if it is out of the way. They always seem to have more lanes open so it takes a lot less time to come in and get out.

I’m not the biggest fan of Wal-Mart, not like I use to be. But it is the one stop for all your needs and the prices are amazing. I can ever leave the store with out first checking out the five dollar movie rack, or the three dollar sales in the baby clothes section. Wal-Mart has a policy that they will not be under sold, so you are sure to find what you need or want at a  great price.

You will find everything for every room in your house and for your car. If you need a new bed spread or a new rug, if you need new furniture or television, you will always find it at Wal-Mart. Keep your eyes open for the seasonal selection at great prices and when it starts to becomes out of season look for amazing sales.

Have fun shopping with your kids in their toys section, I always have to take a walk down the pink aisle just to see what is new and what is on sale. So shop Wal-Mart to find off-brand and brand names at a great price, “always”.

New Hiking and Biking Path in the Middle of Tyler

July 21st, 2010

In past articles I have taken our city and local government to task over the overregulation and general nit- pickiness of which I believe they are sometimes guilty. So I thought it only fair to mention some local improvements a perhaps give a little due credit. I have been pleased to watch the development of the running and biking trails that run roughly parallel to Broadway over the last few years. The overall trails run from Rose Rudman Park, clear down to Grande, just behind highway 69. The paths are beautiful, and even in the summer time manage to stay relatively cool thanks to the shade and breezes provided by the tall pines. I often meet family and friends there to walk off our Andy’s desert and let the kids run a bit. Even without playground equipment it’s always a pleasant surprise how much amusement they get and how much energy they can burn off by simply running up and down the path. I for one have really enjoyed having a relatively quiet walk right in the middle of Tyler.

The sprawling park is an example of something that local government seems to be doing right, (at least as far as I can see). Here is something that can be used by the entire community in a really productive way. The new parks provide a place for people to meet, exercise, and generally improve their health, as well as enjoy the outdoors. On the Rudman end of the park there are even pavilions and picnic tables available. If you’re looking for a nice place to stretch your legs, and take a stroll through the woods; I highly recommend checking out these hiking / biking paths. By the way, looking for a place to park can be a bit confusing. For easy access to the trail, I suggest parking behind Woodcreek Athletic Club. For maps and other information see the city’s website: http://www.cityoftyler.org/DirectoryofCityParks/RoseRudmanTrail/tabid/226/Default.aspx.

The Fed Ex Office in Tyler TX

April 8th, 2010

FED EX OFFICE

4522 S Broadway Avenue
Tyler TX 75703
Phone: 903 509 1090

In the shopping district opposite the mall on S Broadway you will find FedEx Office. Don’t be confused, this was once called Kinkos and offers the same services as before, but has now been re-branded.

Fed Ex Office is a chain of stores that provide a retail outlet for Fed Ex shipping, primarily geared towards small business and home office use. However, they also provide a wider service such as copy and printing services, signs, banners, and office supplies. They will make booklets for you, brochures, flyers and business cards. For family use they can make cards and personalized invitations, plus calendars and photo gifts. In the shop there is a quite a good range of office products for sale and I liked the greeting cards they stocked which were a bit out of the ordinary.

We went to Fed Ex in Tyler TX for our passport photos. They were pricey – $15 for two – but the photographer seemed to know what she was doing and exactly how the pictures needed to be for official documents. There is also a notary service provided in store which is quite handy.

There is an online service so you can download your documents to be printed and go in store for the pickup. They will also direct mail your documents. In addition, they will pack and post almost anything legal! And they have internet services and computer rental in case you should need it.

The staff at Tyler Fed Ex were friendly and helpful. I would say that the services provided are quite expensive but if you don’t want to do it yourself, then Fed Ex is a great option. The attention to detail is satisfying and they will re-do any thing that doesn’t print exactly as you want it.

The Woodshed in Tyler

February 4th, 2010

The Wood Shed

3601 S. Broadway
Tyler 75701
903 561 8231

Open: Mon-Fri 10am – 5.30pm
Sat 10am – 3pm

The Woodshed in Tyler Texas sells unfinished and finished real wood furniture plus custom made pieces which can be stained to order. They specialize in matching items with furniture you already own and in providing corner furniture or pieces that you need to fit your home in a special way. They boast in having every type of furniture for every room of the home.

We came across the Woodshed after admiring a beautiful solid wood dining room table belonging to friends. They told us that they had stained and finished it themselves and paid less doing it that way. We were intrigued and went to visit the store ourselves. The furniture at the Woodshed instantly impressed us. We were keen to purchase bedroom furniture to match our bed but could only afford to buy them one piece at a time over a period of 6 months. The staff at the Woodshed matched the color for us and kept the mixture on record so that when we went to re-order they could stain the remaining items the same color. We had them stain and finish each piece for us as I was concerned that I wouldn’t do such a good job as the ‘experts’ We have been delighted with the set.

At a later date we chose a bookshelf and TV cabinet with shaped glass doors. There were so many designs to chose from it was almost overwhelming but we found just what we wanted in the end. The price was pretty reasonable – comparable to Ashley Furniture, but paying for them to be stained was an extra expense. We were still very pleased to have solid custom furniture at an affordable price. One of the doors of the TV cabinet has since slipped a little in its hinges but I think that on the whole, the furniture will last well and probably outlive us.

I liked the personal attention we received at the Woodshed and the unhurried advice from the staff. They seemed to empathize with my indecision and were very helpful. Our children were happy going to the store because they have a lego table and dolls house for kids to play with. Customer care is important here. One negative point is that they don’t deliver. They do know a ‘man with a van’ who apparently provides a reliable service for a fee but we chose instead to borrow a truck and carefully transport it ourselves. Luckily it arrived undamaged and now has pride of place in our home.

If you are looking for wooden furniture in Tyler Texas I would definitely check out the Woodshed. They do have some beautiful things and it is great to be able to customize items to suit your existing home décor.
